Cool trip! Love that area.
Didnt think you would be able to skin the lake this late this year.
I went up there with kololo for a recon hike the day before. Road was mauled by blowdown! Or snow down... turned around a couple hundred feet after hitting snow line.

Thanks again to all contributing to the great access/ski-out, boot packs, reports, etc. Met a bunch of fine folks up there yesterday, all friendly and courteous. Way to go TAY'ers and others ; -)
Eric and I hit it for a dusk patrol yesterday (left trailhead at 5 PM) and was quite worried about the snow conditions that late in the day (slushy/mushy?) but wow, what a surprise... still fairly corny, not sticky at all, beautiful sunset.
Don (rustyknees), great meeting you up there......

That tent looks wet! Nice work though, any trip that ends at the sultan bakery is a a good trip, and good to see you got some special tent time with Allen.

By the way, we met a likely record setter up there today: Nason at 2.5yrs old, tho he was riding in his mom's backpack, not on boards.
Records or not, I have to say that carrying a kid that big is a lot of work. Maybe too much work!? I was really struggling to boot up the last section to the ridge crest. But Silas is quite the gentleman! He plunge ste...
Cool route, we did the same trip on Friday and experience everything from rain, to snow, partly cloudy, to bluebird.
i'm tempted to grab my 3 mo. old lil girl just to bump the age down further.

I think lapaz25 will beg to differ on the record setting.
No need to beg! Congrats Lara!! Sorry to miss that trip.
Maybe we set an age record on the difference among group members?

I think lapaz25 will beg to differ on the record setting. Here's Lara skiing off Silver with her daughter, then 4 months, on June 14, 2009.

One run and done....just wanted to beat silas to the post.
Well done! :) We wondered whose car that was when we headed up, and then saw no one at the ridgecrest. The west slope skied cornier today, perhaps because we skied it earlier than previous days. But even our second run was also cornier, so the fresh snow of a week ago is consolidating?

Awesome trip! Thanks for sharing.
MtnPavlas, let me know if you want a companion for early morning Friday. I'd like to ski and need to be back in SEA by 10:30.

And then the flat trip back to the road was nice due to all the previous skiers who smoothed it out and cleaned it off. Much thanks to them because otherwise the suncups on the flats would have been unpleasant.
Yes, Silas' prompt and enthusiastic reporting did a fine job of helping get a bomber uptrack carved into the basin slope, stairwell quality bootpacks int...
Good job guys. That sounds like the perfect trip for my regular partner that has an aversion to climbing Rainier. You almost summit, and then you get to have all the fun skiing it without having to tag it.
At 7:45am, the NE facing slopes in the main bowl were a little soft, but still fun and fast. No sticky and not suncupped on the steeps....in the trees was a different story of course...that reminds me I need to clean and re-wax my skis tonight.

Thanks for the nudge, Bryan. Am going with a buddy of mine tonight so can't leave him hanging ; -)
I wish I could go tomorrow but the rest of the week is pretty packed. I'll post conditions. Maybe Friday super early... would be a sunrise hike for sure as I'd have to be back in Bellevue by 9 AM.

MtnPavlas: can you go tomorrow AM instead? I'd go with you then.
How was the snow? Hoping to get out there for a dusk patrol tonight. Thank you in advance for any beta ; -)
2 miles-ish. Least that's about where we switched on Saturday.

any current updates to access the trail heads? thanks!
I skied it on the 20th of May, road 3661 is clear to the trail head. The vault toilet is even stocked with TP. Take 3661 to your first left hand turn (3650) go 200 yards and you are there. Have fun.
HAHA! The Bird had to go back for more, and I couldn't let him have all the fun! ;)
Ha, I thought you guys said you were tired of Silver!
Nice job getting that one off the Summit Silas.

Nice! You hit her in style! Usually skiers new to the area are reluctant to head over to the East ridge "Larrison Ridge"
Yes indeed, there was river of mush coming down with us. It was a little freaky. :-)
Wow, what a great video, Carl. What some of us may capture as somewhat boring imagery, you tweak into a piece of art. Nicely done.

Sick Vid Bird! Specially like the Rainy Rainier seg. :) Best Silver Sessions so far!!!
Silas, The SLAYER! Cant wait to see the Freebird footage...
How far is it to skinnable snow from the White River Trailhead?
Sounds like a great trip.
We were up the next day on Sunday and the conditions were great before 1:00. Crevasses are definitely opening up on the Roman Wall. One of our party decided to boot pack for the last 500 feet, but as soon as he got his skis on his pack, we ran into a thin long crevasses that a roped climbing team just punched into. It spread at least half way across the headwall. Time to put the skins back on since we were not going to rope up. ...

Thanks but what I'm talking about isn't on silver, but is visible from the summit
I'm pretty sure I know the long one you are talking about (the one you are looking at when you're heading back to windy Pass? ) and it looked very boney.

Is the tinkham chute still holding snow?
These 2 chutes looked in shape on saturday... Not sure if either of them is the chute you are asking about...

We did it on Sunday (6/2), and it seemed like the snow was getting a bit firmer and more stable. Skiied very nicely in the morning, by the afternoon it was sticky but not sloppy. Cut one sluff coming down from Pan Point, it slid for about 100' but was only about 3" deep.
Lots of people out!

Hollywood sent me a photo taken from Ingalls Pass:

Built Character for sure. Better than Church ;)
It also deepened my reverence and respect for the mountains. I felt like I was on sacred ground. As I look back I see how we were listening and observing more than imposing ourselves--taking in all the data that surrounded us and adjusting here and there. It felt like a dance with the mountains at our lead.

I also skied Lassen Saturday. We hiked from Emigrant Pass, and it was probably 1.5 miles of walking before we hit skiable snow. We skied the main bowl down toward the Devastated area. If I did it again, would probably ski the north/northwest aspect of the north ridge-- looks like 3000+ vf of steep smooth snow there.
Also snow nearby Reading peak looked great.
Lower part of Devastated area was really suncupped.
