thanks for the writeup and sweet pictures - that sunset photo is amazing! Such a great view from up there...
Thanks Johny for an awesome day out and sticking it through. The footage is below. Work was rough yesterday...

We watched two serac falls off baker around 3pm on Tuesday.
It was impressive!
Now that's a happy TR.  Stoked for you guys!

That's a great story.  You should write the extended version and publish it.  Dave Wag's magazine just did a three part fiction adventure story about a snowmobile assisted tourer named Zed who, in part two, got buried and dug out, and then in part three, was eaten by a Yeti.  Was a fun read.    I'd spend the effort to read your story in three parts.

Toured up Creek Run @ East with XCD gear, approx. 4 PM, getting the last goodness out of that sunshine. Snow was at perfect softness then both for turning and for up-traction with scales only. Scooted to Grand Junction and back, and down Kendall. very few others had made tracks on the XC system, in sections mine were the only. Snow noticeably mushier on areas exposed to the west eg around Rockdale.

Odd that at Hyak even though we are now supposedly normal snowpack, there's a big...
Wow Zap, great minds think alike, sorry to miss you.  Corn harvest at West 230-345PM today was beautiful, sunny and windless.  The only missing element was Amar's bikini girls, they were still recovering from the 6hrs of driving to and from Paradise yesterday.  :(  Great to see JD today returning to better health!   https://vimeo.com/89081362  https://vimeo.com/89156673

Lift assistance beginning at 4PM provided another half dozen sunny runs on the untracked corderoy with the...

A couple hundred feet above the col I slammed into my wall for what felt like the last time.  It was time to institute my last trick, play Plan F, whatever you want to call it. I rummaged around my pack until I found the coveted Espresso Love Gu, snarfed it, put in the headphones, and cranked The Glitch Mob's new album: Love, Death, and Immortality<...

And this is why we do what we do :) Happy Birthday!

I actually stopped on the way down the Coleman as it hit me that I was actually enjoying myself, and quite a lot at that!  Once we were clear of the crevasses we opened it up and ripped some huge GS turns!

BS, did you lose a red buckle?

nope.  green buckles on my snowboard ski boots!

but there were a few other parties on the north side of baker enjoying the sun and pow on tuesday...
Rylan's photo was from Tuesday.  Not sure what time.  The debris field is visible from Glacier.
I found the coveted Espresso Love Gu pack, ate that, put in the headphones, and cranked The Glitch Mob's new album: Love, Death, and Immortality.  This made me go all Beast Mode or whatever you want to call it, and the next hour was a dark, angry blur of kicking steps, gritting teeth, grunting, and occasionally trying not to puke.

Effing hilarious!!!

...a creamy dreamy 3 inches of powder...
Any idea when that was taken? The two we dealt with released from the shoulder of Colfax, with the bigger one mentioned in the TR closer to the col. However, our server at Graham's asked us about a serac fall that people had seen from town; I wonder if this was that.
The seracs have been busy lately, it would appear. Happy birthday!

nice!!!!!

i didn't see quite that much snow up on baker,

BS, did you lose a red buckle?
nice!!!!!

i didn't see quite that much snow up on baker, but specific volcanoes notwithstanding, it sure was a great day to be riding light, cold pow in the alpine sun!

and sledding out sure beats skinning out in the rain.  that last damp slog fest cost me my camera!
Such an amazing day though trail braking was brutal. Couldn't agree more about the conditions on the Interglacier being the best I have experienced.

According to my Gopro 2 minutes and 34 seconds of bliss

Here are a few photos.

as long as you stay active and busy.

Great pics! I ignored the telemetry and skied Stuart yesterday.  Was a wonderful day in the sun, and good skiing for the most part, but I should have headed south. Pow trumps corn every time.
That's a great report, love the pics too. Particularly the 1st one, it has great lines (& curves)
Keep it up man!  Great TR and great attitude.  I'm looking forward to skimo catching on here in the NW, but also great to see folks taking it so seriously in utah and CO (maybe a little too seriously based on some of the facial expressions of the other racers in your pics :) ). Congrats on a great season of racing and thanks for sharing.
READ ON - this will be worth it.  I'd like to take this opportunity to share a great story about a meeting with the most amazingly WT sledneck I've ever encountered or even heard of.

First off, I myself own and use a real mountain sled - 2009 Skidoo Summit X 800.  I'm in full support of legal snowmobiling as I think it offers excellent access opportunities and sometimes is just pure fun in a different sort of way.  That said....

but they were there legally, right?

Correct.  There is no current rule against Over Snow Vehicles in the Clara Lakes Basin.

All I ask is they do respect the no sno-mo'ing signs so we can enjoy our respective activities.

Bummer you had to share your favorite stash with the bubbas, but they were there legally, right?  I've skied some fantastic terrain off the 9712, dropping into the Devlls Gulch drainage.  No sledder is going down there.  Too far from the resort for day tours?

BTW - Cool hound!
It's the dickheads of any demographic that ruin the good name of the rest of them. Most of the sledders I have come across are totally cool, slow down when they pass, wave, and are respectful. Though there have been the exceptions; those who are rude and leave trash everywhere and give no concern to "no sno-mo" signs...basically just acting like typical white trash. I think most of the fellow sno-mo'ers aren't appreciate of this behavior since it paints them all with tha...
What a nice day!
Thanks Mike.
Me being a every once in awhile sledneck and also a dedicated skier, I very much respect your comments.  We CAN all coexist.
Retirement sounds so sweet!
I'm on to your tricks and hope to catch ya soon up there.
Roxy seems like the honey badger, don't care.
We were on Adams around Jan 25 and saw snowmobiles in the illegal zone. Another snowmobile started past the markers towards us, and I started gesturing for him to turn around. Then I realized it was a National Forest ranger who was tracking the 2 guys above us. We said 'hi' and told him they were up there. It seemed like they played hide-and-seek throughout the day, and I'm not sure he ever caught them. I hope so.

Wouldn't that be through "sublimation" rather than the actual melting of the facets (do to the decrease of temperature gradient, therefore reversing the process and so leaning toward equi-temperture metamorphism--and so less tg process and more et?

Noted, and changed.
E-gads! I'm sorry Mike...I was once in your shoes on the south side of Adams where the snow machines were way up on the top of Aiken Lava Flow and even going higher. We had summited and was back at our 8000'+ high camp snoozing when the machines did circles around our bivvy trenches, asking if we were alright...thinking that the skis stuck vertical in the snow was some sign of distress. One guy in our party got out of his bivvy sack and relieved himself in front of the riders and said...
I don't know any of the technical stuff but the point is that the deep weak layer on the ground, which earlier in this thread was maybe being suggested as improving, is still a potential problem.  At least in that one spot where I chose to go looking for it.
Sorry---not trying to be a pain, just a little old school and so trying to put newish terms into context..for example.... isn't depth hoar an advanced form of faceting...I read quite often "facets", and "depth" hoar in the same sentence...and it seems like the writer is suggesting that they are different...

I was definitely not an English major...

How about that, a secret powder stash right above the hiway and across the street from the resort base area, who would have figured, you should check out the bc of the GRW off the top of chair 6 at 6700 ft el.  Be glad to show you around as I am always in need of hiking partners.
A little late to the game with these, but I just finally got the photos off my camera.  Great trip and that corn harvest turned out to be a real treat!  Great Video Mike!

Interesting result on the compression test, but it seems a little tall for column height.  This could have skewed the result from the effects of leverage on the weak layer.  In general, I think CT should have column height less than 1m.  You might try a deep tap test or PST on the layer instead.  Just a thought.....
That crack is crazy.  What a wild winter we are having.

facet taste test

:)
Glad you found something skiable :)
i see you use the same facet taste test as i do ;-)  pretty worrisome layer down deep, thank you for the information
It's snoqualmie... somebody has to do it.

By the way it was sunny in Leavenworth this morning.
Here it is.  Not super exciting, but it is interesting that a 150cm column would fail at the ground on tap #13.

This was my first day on my new Alien boots.  I drove home in them just because I could.  Couple seconds of the video in honor of the "sneaker" function of these boots.
Smart move.  The first photo looks spring-sketchy.
wow.... looks really springy in the trees.  Guess thats what happens with that much rain.

At least it wasn't very crowded up there.
