We saw your tracks while out today. With scoured lee slopes and intimidatingly widespread wind-loading we saw no reason to travel into little zigzag canyon.
I think the location that you're referring to is actually en-route to little zig zag. In the future, you might consider traveling up about 750' vertical where that moraine can be end-run at the top. That's a g...
Right on fellas. I'm so grateful for my winter Baker summit skis, but they are full on gnar missions.

Speaks volumes to the use of hasties, cutting , and stomping when slope cracking has been noted...
As always a great looking trip. Thanks for the great stoke!
I don't always travel out of state to go somewhere with awesome scenery, but when I do my stupid iphone locks up. My only two photos to contribute are below.
It should get an honorary mention that I was still sick during all of this, blowing my nose and coughing up phlegm. Needless to say I slept in a bivy. Ski penetration 0-16".
impressive range.
Well we did the phantom from the tippy top's and it was all good, even the waterfall trees were acceptable although the skin track through the trees was a PITA.
2 other parties of 2 hit the slot as they got up there quicker but we didn't want that many tracks and who can resist 3000ft of untouched cascade powder.
Thanks Silas!

Is the Enter/Return key broken on your keyboard? Glad you're safe.
Thanks for posting and I'm very happy you're ok (we shared some trail time on a sunny corny day at MSH a few years back). I agree that it's a constant battle to overcome normalization to risk ("Over the years of no incidents we get sloppy") but accounts like this one can serve as a reminder to stay alert. Mainly for that reason, I am always very appreciative of reports like this.
Wow! Glad you guys made it out safely.
Since it was St. Patrick's Day, you must have been wearing some green to be so lucky?

Thanks for the write up, was looking at doing Hood on Thursday. Glad you made it out ok.
We were at west around 10:00am Enough sun came through that the lower lift and magic carpet roofs were dropping their snow cover quickly. kiinda screwed our second run.
Don't know what your objective is but you might shift to a more shaded one. North facing worked for us. If i could go back tomorrow Id go for Hyak or some big trees or something else shaded.
My guess is Silas was some place secret and spooky deep where the sun never shines ;)

AWESOME Johnny! Although I'm not upset I missed this adventure. i will, however, always remember this math equation, as I think its entirely too perfect:

As we headed up the Coleman the suffering really began for me. I started running into my personal wall easier and easier as my legs felt the cumulative effect of a formula that goes something like (distance traveled)...
Access is 2wd low clearance if it hasnt snowed during the weekend. Need 4wd and high clearance if it has snowed more then 10cm pretty much. They log on weekdays so do NOT go there without a radio on week days. Even on Sunday they were running some equipment on the road so a radio is always a good idea.
Turn onto Lybarger rd in Malakwa and head up the first logging road on your right.

You guys are my new heroes.
Was there any sun up there at all today? The slightest bit will ruin my dawn patrol objective and I'll change for a different one. Was planning a SW aspect figuring there wasn't any sun today.
Thanks
Thanks
How's the acces to get in there. Do you beta or directions.
Nice work guys, now that's fn extreme.

Umm, what the heck are baller G turns?? Not sure which tracks you're asking about.
Anyway, the large-radius turns are mine, the short-radius turns at looker's left are Kristen's and those at right are Theresa's.
Yes, the large radius ones. Those look real nice.
West was definitely wind affected and picked up some sun that you might have misssed in the trees . Tried it for a couple runs and then moved on to Hyak which was much more sheltered and more to our liking.

Savegondor- Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry ;D
wish I had that sled. tomorrow looks great. a friend and I may head to crystal instead.
Great to meet you guys. Good to get the weather window.
Awesome! Fun times. Is it easier on the front or the back.
Thanks for the report and posting your track! Granite is on my list.

Thanks for the nice read on a rainy evening, Amar!
I recall a larger avalanche on the Nisqually back in the mid 70's. It followed a windy weeklong mid-winter storm and ran about as far as this recent one, but not to the terminus of that time. The normal Wilson Crossing of Nisqually Glacier was covered in debris almost from one side to the other. The crown fracture ran from Gibralter to the cleaver across the top of Nisqually Icefall and looked to be several tens of feet high f...

Cool dude!!!! I was curious whose tracks those were down from pebble creek onto the nisqually.
Hopefully they keep the gate open a little later soon with daylight savings and all that.

March 11: The snow on the Nisqually Glacier was smooth and fast, especially by hugging the skier's left edge which had gotten the least sun. But there was something very unusual under the smooth surface: Roughly one-quarter of the lower Nisqually Glacier was covered by the remnants of a truly monstrous avalanche, well up in the D5 class, a wet slab which ran from somewhere above 10000 ft all the...

We all nailed the weather window, good to meet you guys up on the mountain. I've climbed and skied Baker over 20 times. Every time as day trip. It was good to relax at camp. But I still like going light and fast as day trip. Day 1 was a bit of a slog with the big pack, well worth it for sure.
Nice, it was cool seeing you guys up there. Such a great day up there!

Sweet!
I was the guy (with Daver) that skied over and said hi when you 4 were just above the col. I believe you make a brief appearance in our video that Daver posted here. Your lines down the west face look awesome and I will have to try that next time I'm up there.
I was definitely jealous on the way up when I kept looking back and seeing you guys enjoying your morning in the sun on top of Heliotrope!

Awesome write-up, you really had me laughing. Sounds like you came at the race with a great attitude and most importantly had a lot of fun. I just got me feet wet with racing this winter so your tr was very inspiring. Keep it up!
Really fun and enjoyable post, thanks. Love those zones!
Looks way fun. Beautiful terrain up there.

Well done, sirs. I glad some folks got to enjoy the beautiful weekdays!
Dave,
Awesome video! Glad you thought to bring and use it! I cringed when you hit the rime ice on the Roman Wall, and then again when you went into the frozen slide debris.
Amar,
thank you for the weather analysis, that really is helpful. I have never heard of multiplying free-air winds by 1.5 with gusts to 2x but that does seem to match up well. As you can see in Dave's video the wind is quite strong when we start at the top of the Roman wall, and lessens signifi...

Well done!!!
Doing the road approach plus the rest of that mountain is quite the big day, but so worth it.
