A few times in the last year I've followed a perfectly nice skin track next to a perfectly reasonable snowshoe track on the first lap only to return on the second lap to find that snowshoers had sex changed the skin track too.
I watched a group of six snowshoers jump off of a steep roll into pow (and a hidden 'shrund) on a fairly high avy day in a spot that I wouldn't go.
I watched a guy on snowshoes lead his family across a very steep traverse under a row of south facing rocks that were catching great afternoon sun above an open creek. I did appreciate that he wasn't using the glorious skintrack highway on the opposite of the creek where I was but I think his wife was about to grab the kid and push him into the creek. Quicker than a divorce...
I was driving down late from the ski area last January 12 around 7pm. My car thermometer indicated 12* at the parking lot and by the time I got 7.5 miles down the highway it said 15*. I rounded the last turn before the highway flattens out and crosses the Nooksack river and saw two headlamps come bobbing out into the road. I pull to a stop to see what's going on and here someone with a Dutch South African accent ask if I know where they are. I tossed their snowshoes and packs in my box and got them into the car and gave them a ride back up to their car in the Heather Meadows parking lot. En route they explained how they were hiking to Artist Point and ended up at the Nooksack River. Their last question to me was whether I thought they'd need tire chains to get to Rainier for their next planned hike. I checked but no snowshoers went missing on Rainier the following weekend.
I think there is might be a trend here...people who leave later in the day are likely to have poor route finding skills...

15-20 years ago, it would be once every other blue moon that I would see other skiers venturing out past the boundaries of ski areas before or after the season. I kind of miss the days of hiking up places like the Muir Snowfield in Late September and being the only skier on the mountain, not so much to be a snow hog, but for the fact, I didn't have to worry about being an idiot or looking like an idiot.
My solution is if there is someone below me, keep going and find another spot to ski. If there is someone above me, I get the hell out of the way. It now seems like putting in a little more effort and going further out, people like myself can find free reign and not have to worry about looking like an idiot or acting like an idiot.
It's as if bc skiing is becoming more urbanized and along comes with learning how to be idiot proof.

The worst thing bc idiots ever did to me was invite me out on a tour with them and get me hooked. I'll never escape this addiction, nor do I even intend to survive it, rather I've accepted my fate of riding until I die.

After a pit was dug and we carefully ski cut a slope in the stampede pass area all agreed there was a pretty good chance it was safe, not 100 percent but, it was a little hard to hear tho over the whine of a engine approaching and we watched a sled head launch off the ridge and emerge from a crator and careen down the gully to the valley. Ok then, I guess it is stable.
