Subject: Re: Nordic Patrol: No volunteers in Park today (Sunday)
Thanks, Phil. Our main concern right now is everyone's safety. SWAT is following tracks and everyone at Paradise is holed up at JVC for now, 125 people. The person of interest is very experienced, post-Iraq military... So, just stay away for now, and thanks for all your support.

What kind of bastard(Excuse my french) would come into a national park and shoot a ranger. A drug runner or something?
A man who is damaged goods, apparently:

[Benjamin Colton] Barnes is the father of a 1-year-old daughter, and custody documents filed in Pierce County Superior Court by the child's mother describe him as an Iraq war veteran plagued by anger and depression who was hospitalized after threatening suicide last January.
In July, the mother, Nicole Santos, petitioned the court for an amended parenting plan and restraining order, citing threats of violence by Barnes.
"I just feel there is so much instability," Santos wrote in a July 19 petition seeking to restrict Barnes' access to the child.
"I think it is important for the court to know that Benjamin was also deployed to Iraq in 2007-2008 and has possible PTSD issues," she wrote, referring to post-traumatic stress disorder. "He gets easily irritated, angry, depressed and frustrated.
"Benjamin also has a lot of weapons in his home, such as, firearms and knives," Santos wrote. "I am fearful of what Benjamin is capable of with the small arsenal he has in his home and his recent threats of suicide."
Attempts to contact Barnes' family were unsuccessful. A man who answered the phone at a number associated with his parents in California said he had no comment and hung up.
In no way does this excuse what Barnes is believed to have done. But in some sense this tragedy appears to be collateral damage from the Iraq war.

I agree no excuse and that one proximate causal factor was PTSD from Iraq; another is a lack of mechanism or process for family members and friends to ensure a troubled family member gets proper treatment--our society doesn't even have a way to keep seriously mentally ill people off the streets to protect them and the public.
But what is the ultimate cause? Did the perp have a congenital personality disorder? Does the fact that our society has become increasingly militaristic, glorifies both societal and individual violence as a way of dealing with conflict, frustrating situations, and lack of personal accomplishment? Just list the blockbusters--Dirty Harry, Rambo, Die Hard and all the thrillers and horror flicks used to titillate the most base of all impulses. A society where the most sacrosanct of constitutional rights is the right to bear arms and the developed country with the most arms in private possession (including Switzerland where every adult male is issued a weapon, Sweden, too, I believe)? What about the society that is stressing individuality at the expense of communality and social obligations? What about our country having the most alcohol-abusing, drug-using, self-medicating population on Earth and the most fundamentally religious population among the developed countries.
Oh yeah, gun rights advocates/hunters/veterans, etc.--I've been there, done that, and have my own collection ...
My most sincere condolences to Margaret's family, friends, and coworkers and to the public she served.

He won't last long if he is post holing an escape plan.
I always was against armed Rangers and in this case it would have not made a lick of difference, but it has me thinking.
This is a little sideways from the topic, but For some reason people think its OK to go out of the city and shoot guns in the woods near residential areas like Greenwater. Can't do that in the city, but it's OK off an FS road, or over an FS road ???
