Sure glad we drifted away from the topic of driving to the mountain, so we could get to some quality debates.  ::) ???

Steep and deep is always good enough for me.    ;)
If the avy conditions were low and not considerable, I could imagine the temporary split being reasonable.

OK. Lets make it more difficult.
Same Scenario, 3 skiers, out all day skiing many aspects. Avy danger considerable but everything has been stable all day.
Two aspects leading to exit of tour. Skiers on different aspects will not be in touch or visible to each other.
One is steep and deep, one is not steep and  a pretty lame line. One skier declines steep and deep because he doesn't somehow like the look of it or thinks it's dangerous for whatever reason. Explains reasons to other 2 who want to ski it. They disagree   with him on steep and deep aspect risk but third skier can't be budged and doesn't want to ski back alone.
What happens?

Party stays together in this situation IMO. I agree with Scotsman that partners should be matched in risk tolerance. If you have a less experienced party member, you are implicitly assuming a mentor roll when you take them, and this may mean changing to less ambitious plans. Personally, I think 4 is a nice number b/c it gives more flexibility and better fills most cars.

I like skiing untracked snow as much as anyone, but if there are already tracks and I can get freshies on one side and it cliffs out or goes into thick timber I will cross everyones tracks to get more fresh turns on the other side, top, middle or bottom. I never really understood the hard on some people get about admiring their tracks, carry on with your circle jerk.

Oh, I crossed tracks all morning today, my dog's. Nice meadow skipping tour 5 minutes from home.
