Clearly you just need some bigger skis, then you'll have to have burlier boots.

150 gram weight saving? That's like the same as a pack of cigarettes and lighter?

The new breed of fatties are now near and beyond 10 pounds.  What's with one buckle?

There are minor weight advantages to the three buckle boots out there, but the main advantage I find is that it doesn't feel like my foot is in a cement cast when touring.  Booting is also more enjoyable in a boot with a lower cuff height.   I've found that the softer three buckle boots are fine for pretty much any terrain and snow condition--the one place I have problems is with a heavy pack on.  Then it's very easy to go over the handlebars.  Skiing conditions that require a lot of forward pressure (moguls) would also be a problem, but you aren't going to find those in the backcountry, at least not on the west coast.

I would say that if you think you want a three buckle boot, that alone probably makes you a decent candidate for one.  I don't think I have particularly beautiful form and actually kinda prefer skiing in something a little softer.

I should append this with a helpful review LeeL posted that I found when I was boot shopping: www.doglotion.com/touring-boot-review-dynafit

Thanks very much for the feedback.

After reviewing all of the above, I'm going with the 3 buckle option.

For even better ski control, and lightweight, you will have to go with the carbon fiber DyNA:
www.skiingthebackcountry.com/New_Ski_Products_2009.php

Of course this assumes that cost is not a problem for you, the DyNA costs $1550 + tax and can be fondled at Marmot Mountain Works in Bellevue.  They have only a 27.5 now, and more sizes are expected to be available in a month or so.   FYI the boot sole length on the 27.5 is 297mm and it weighs 1kg per boot with liner!

The 27.5 fits me perfectly, I love it, but my $8.55/hr ski instructor pay will take 100 lessons to cover the cost.  Alternatively I could give up Comcast internet or ATT cell plan for a couple years, eh?

Those things are soooo nice. I like how Dynafit places them in the "Ski/Run" category ;D
I wonder how they ski? A trip to Marmot may be in order (I'm 27.5 too)!!

I think I'd give up skiing if I had to use a 3-buckle boot. Cookie, I think your equation puts me at 15+ buckles (the + is for safety).

In case you want to explore options in choosing a ski check out this in the big size:
www.dpsskis.com/ski/lotus120
In the big size you're still only at 3.9kg for skis, well worth it on the way down. ;D
