Your Opinion: 3 or 4 buckle Dynafit Zzero-F?

I am buying a new pair of Dynafit AT boots. Last issue to be decided: 3 buckle ( www.dynafit.com/uk/4/672/61057-Zzero3_C_TF.html ) vs 4 buckle ( www.dynafit.com/uk/4/672/61017-ZZero4_C_TF.html )?

I appreciate that the 3 buckle is about 9% lighter (1595g v 1450g for size 27.5). I intend to use for day-long tours in pure back country (not side-country), on moderate to hard terrain -- with the occasional ski mountaineering objective on the shoulders. 60% Cascades, 20% inter-mountain West, 10% international/other.

Thoughts? Any input will be appreciated.

Wingy ,
Thanks for joining ius n this forum and a damn good first question. My guess is your going to 50 /50 responses on this . I'm solidly in the 3 buckle crowd. First off i'm more tourer than skier and certainly not the kind of skier to take advantage of 4 buckle boots which every one is pushing now. I tried to buy the Dynafit zzero 3tcf at the end of last season but none were available in mondo 30 even in euroland.( I settled for a whopper deal on TLT 3 evos. ) It's also possible to buy the 4 buckle model and take off the lower buckle which in my not so humble opinon is just vestigal anyhow.
.Disclaimer This whole paragraph above is tinged for desire for lighterweight gear as I get nearer to geezer status.

What skis will you be pushing around with these boots?

I am a few tours into my first 3 buckle boot (Spirit 3) and I am happy with them. They drive my 110mm waisted and narrower skis just fine. I am running the stock tongues and may consider a stiffer one for my bigger skis but they tour so nice the way that they are that I may not get around to it. I considered a few four buckle boots but the buckle configuration did not seem to suggest much of an advantage to me and none of them were quite orange enough.

Good luck.

3 buckle boots are not allowed internationally.
3 or 4 is acceptable in the inter-mountain west but
3 buckle is mandatory in the cascades.
In "other" 5 buckle boots are preferable.
For good ski control I'd get none of the models you mention, but get the Dynafit Titans which are nearly as stiff as alpine boots but tour extremely well due to the excellent upper cuff mobility.
Little bit heavier.
My son tours with them and loves them.
But since you are counting grams ( 145g Diff) you probably wont.

OP here. Thanks very much for taking the time to give feedback.

FWIW, I will be skiing on K2 181 Waybacks (dimensions 124/88/108), which is the lightest K2 2010 BC ski. I am 6'2" 180.

I did look at the Titans, but they seem to be too much meat for the ski. But I do appreciate the thought.

The comment about the 3d buckle being vestigial resonated with me -- in my last pair of AT boots (Lowa something-or-others ~2005) it was always the loose and/or unbuckled. I wonder if other 4 buckle boot owners experience this?

Wingy my specs dovetail with you but "orange enough" does factor in. But then again I also have scarpa lazers to cover the "orange enough" concept and T2s to skippy toe with . Consider Scotsman a outlier. Perhaps Lowell Skoog as well with his cannnabilized dehydrated TLT 2s. not sure Lowell even has buckles?
the waybacks sound suspiously like Baker superlights and work stinx.
