It's best to use the NWS zone forecasts for general mountain info. I'd recommend checking out some of the NWAC "going deep" sessions---last year they had a whole evening of how to use various websites to gather information. If you want to geek out, the UW weather model page offers all of the details: http://www.atmos.washington.edu/mm5rt/
Amar Analkar's site is a great resource with webcams, real-time weather readouts, and the Mt. Rainier Recreational Forecast.  When it comes up for the winter Northwest Avalanche Center has mountain weather and avalanche forecasts and links to all their weather stations.
Dear early-season backcountry go-getters,

I'm new to the PNW coming from the northern Rockies. What sites do people use for weather and snow reports both Rainier and in the Cascades/North Cascades?

Looking forward to meeting the community out here. I'm in Seattle and would be happy to carpool to/from Paradise.

Let it snow,
Kate
Fine Winter trip: sunshine, powder and some whiteout navigation! Yes, a lot of boarders.  I was one of very few tele...

It was indeed a great day up there. Some kind fellow lent me a pair of pants because I, like and idiot, left my shell layers at home. Forgot you name kind sir, but I will bring your pants by today. Also I think this was the first time I ever saw split boarders out number skiers.
Dan, I booted the climbers trail in about 10" of snow. I could have skinned it, but I thought hiking would be faster given how steep it is there. There was a lot of running water on the trail below the treeline, which may now be frozen and treacherous. That would be my main concern as far as trail conditions.
Thanks for the report! We've been trying to see what shape Heliotrope is in! Looks like you had a good time. Cheers!
Awesome photo, Norseman!
Above the clouds :)

Thanks for the info!  How much new snow is there higher up since a week ago and how deep is the snow at Paradise?  Did you dig a pit?
Not much to add...

I skied the Muir Snowfield from a few hundred feet below Camp Muir. Very thick cloud was rising and threatening to take away some hard earned early season vertical. The wind cake up high was very consistent  and skied quite well. The mid section until we skied into the near whiteout was perfect. I was happy to bump into Amar who provided excellent navigation through the tricky mix of rocky soup. Hope everybody got down safe. Car to car again and much better than last Tuesday.
Dog track dollar signs! Way better than money! Thanks for the great pic of new snow and smooth swooping turns! Makes me happy to see them!
Really nice vid brother. And that looked like really fun sliding. Posted on my FB page and scheduled for tomorrow AM. Thanks!!!

did you begin skinning once out of the trees? Or was it a bit of a rocky/snow scramble up the climbers trail?  I may be there Friday and am debating ski touring or ice cragging.
What a great way to start the week.

What, not 77s ?
Excellent trip report!  Thank you for sharing!
Nice TR, photos and video.  ;)
Well-played. I shouldn't have trusted the forecast!
You are a very sick man! Good thing you have a understanding ski partner and wife! Two months without even crappy skiing is such a long time, not having much luck breaking the skiing habit. I'll bet there is not a line forming in the parking lot to get those goods.  Thanks for the stoke!
Those are great photos.  I like the snowboard tracks that milk the slope all the way to a crevasse.
New snow is so nice.
Great Skiing with you guys! Ill have a video up eventually! Looks like we missed the powder train by a few days but maybe winter is finally here. Hope to run into every again!

Jake
Rolfs and the Beast.  Awesome.
That looked like great skiing.  Thanks for sharing the video.
I like the pigtail shadows.
Finally got around to putting together some video of the trip

I wish I had advanced weather forecasting abilities!

Nice thinking...or maybe you just didn't care?
Great day Tuesday, nice to get the party ski back in full swing.  Seeing a glimmer of hope for Thursday's forecast a few of us returned and scored a sleeper pow day.  Substantial snowfall (above Pan) and a helpful breeze made for great turns from Muir to Pan Point . Blue skies (above Pan) did not hurt either. We had smiles on our faces as we walked back into the clouds and rain below.
Great vid! So psyched to end my 33 month streak of being sidelined from the backcountry and start my first TAY streak. That really made me smile!
Perfect weather window with good snow to claim month # 60. May the next 60 be as much fun.
Awesome video - thanks for sharing
Some of the better snow that I have had in my 24+ visits :D
Great day spent with old & new friends! And a Big Thanks to Silas for the Direction to Fun! Kaw!

The Birds of Paradise!  Thanks dschieber.

Sun is the enemy of powder do if imagine the early risers got better stuff. I'd also bet that it was hood enough for snowboarders snow.
Interesting snow quality observations.  We thought it was great from Muir to our P-tex saving stopping point of 6,600'.  Yes was best in the middle as usual, but was a far cry from the worst I've seen there and certainly was a blast for late October.  Maybe call it good snowboarding conditions?  Was a perfect one day window; I'll take as many "High Pressure Tuesday's" as possible, esp. this year  ;).  The best part of all, for the early starters, was that the Park h...
Yea Snow!  Yea car to car! Let the fortunes of snow lovers change! Thanks Silas
Good times yesterday! Nice seeing everyone back down at the parking lot for the tailgate too! What a great day to start(?) the 15-16 ski season.
Very fun day. Here is a skiing picture! I had a camera on me so I linked a few turns on my tails thru the weird windcake - gritting teeth to keep balance - almost fell right after this shot. A sporadic 1-1/2 inch's of mush over the asphalt sidewalk was the best snow on the lower ski out.
Sunday was car-t-car, with 0" snow base from Paradise Lodge to upper entrance of Muir Ice Sheet. I would have GLADLY skied the mank you encountered at 9000'. Your count must be getting up there...congrats for October.
car to car... Luxury.
Sunday-Monday storm left a surprisingly thick and stout layer of base. From Muir to 9K it was heavily wind affected, aka rippled, alternating between very firm and breakable crust.  From 7-9K things skied great. Below abt 6,500 was 6" slushy blueberry and rock dodging with 0-3" over the paved trail.

Weather was awesome, especially on the upskin; Après great!
Thanks for the report, Silas!
