what a season!

thanks for showing me around in japan (and shooting my favorite photo of the season... that volcano shot is going on the wall for sure).  i was quite sad to abandon the AK plans at the last minute, but damn the weather sure was perfect for that traverse, and in the end it was at least as memorable and cool as a week at thompson pass would have been.

it really is an honor and a pleasure to travel through the wilderness with folks who have developed such sharp...
Primo locations for some hard chilling
Anyone have info on weekday road conditions? I seem to recall a warning that the road was only available on the weekend to those not cutting down trees . Website now just gives a headsup that they are hauling logs. Considering driving up the road some evening to crash at/near TH...

thanks
Erik
Thanks for the photos, that looks rad
Awesome. Love the shot with the camera smack dab in the middle of the slide path.

Curious where the waterfall is.  Not familiar with that in that area.  Thanks.

I think that may be the mystical waterfall of perpetual winter... privy only to the initiates of the reverse order--but I could be wrong. I really don't know. I don't think I've ever seen it.

some pics from my scratchy lensed camera--

it was hot!...
Photos up.

risg, sorry - didn't get eyes on Leuthold's, and haven't been to Shuksan.  Not really sure what to compare it to for ya.  Maybe pics will help.
Rad!!  Thats some spectacular terrain.. Glad i cloud help with the taco tuesday beta on the final ddeproach. Awesome to bump into you before you left for otherlands. have  a Good trip.  See you.. Somewhere.  :)
Great buzz from watching that.  Thanks for posting.  Thumbs up!!!

This one really is great to watch ....I feel guilty working
Holy Toledo I love that view . . . . to say it takes me back in the day would be an understatement.

Thanks for the pic . . .
Sounds like its good enough..thanks!
Carbon skis have had me GRIPPED in many spots... The carbon converts perform best hanging on the wall at home now.  I feel like it's worth it to haul big/ heavy boards around for the downhill pleasure and confidence.  Especially when you're trying to get rad on a steep line that is far from help.
Nice TR!
Nice meeting you. We'll cross paths again. I've got to work on my timing. My last 3 days out I hiked over 20 miles and got in about 20 terrible turns. Even Mike Rolfs would call that a dysfunctional turns to effort ratio!😣
Beautiful video! You must have hiked like goats to fit that all in on your " little" day! Looked like perfect snow and weather.
Mr. Ava Jane,

Nice meeting you out there.  Solid effort on trying to make a crossing...  The beers at the road made it worth it!

Thanks for your report.  btw, was there a trench on leutholds?

There were a few...one coming out of the hour glass, and another coming down off the Reid headwall. Skiing above the hourglass looked fun. Below the hour glass, it looked less fun. We opted for the south side which warmed much earlier.
Nice day up there.
You certainly know the various secret spots in the park, vogtski. Boot's way is also great if they don't open the road - nice to have that option.

We have skied in the Tatoosh before - a couple day trips to Castle saddle, climbed Unicorn twice, but this was our first time getting the lay of the land. I have to say, people obsess about the big mountain across the street, but the Tatoosh is where it's at. There are some many options, various aspects, steep and mellow, var...
Nice effort, and thanks for the report!
Great write-up and superb photos...as usual.

... thanks for sharing the alternative exit. That looks nicer! We plan to go back again sometime...

My pleasure.  In stable mid-winter pow, Boot's way might be the best alternative exit of all!

Hey vogtski, thanks for sharing the alternative exit. That looks nicer! We plan to go back again sometime so it's good to know this option.

Hey Charlie, the rust came from water damage - the skis are water logged, rotten, and warped. Kenji discovered yesterday the top sheet in the center of the ski has also split off the ski. Here's the history of the ski. 2011 purchased and mounted at Marmot (don't know what inserts they used). 2013 Jim Mates told Radka to get riser pl...
Hard to plan for that much fun, you just have to be lucky! It looks like perfect to me nice going.
Great TR and wonderful photos as always.

That's the first insert failure I've seen. Do you know which manufacturer made the inserts?

From the photo, it looks like the upper-right and lower-left inserts had died?  If so, it looks like the upper right one had died more recently.

Any theories on all the apparent rust-color under the binding? I've never seen any rust under a Dynafit binding or with Binding Freedom inserts.
Impressive effort and great photos, as always.  I especially liked the climber's lights!  Bummer about your binding.

FWIW, here's an alternate finish I used in a day trip from Castle-Pinnacle col to Longmire many years ago:

At the 5000' waypoint west of Lane Pk, there is a skiable descending traverse mostly in trees down to the large Tatoosh Meadows just south of the Reflection Lake r...
That's me - totally prepared! Left my ski boots so went peak bagging on a high ridge and spooked a bear cub and had to leave. Saw some wet people from the ford but they survived.
WOW looks tremendous..way to hit it right!
BTW... I know you've skied north face Shuskan ..how does the steepness of sandy compare to that..sort of on my bucket list but probably too old now..HA!

Also ..how does Leutholds look?  I skied it years ago and the usual trench was  pretty close to nil...that is a lovely ski too!
Good one!!!  What a fantasic ski.  Teleied  ago..
for those that still care bout tele.  Nice asthetic position and nice not to be over 45degrees..still plenty attention getting.  Climbed it a few months earliet in winter so not a flash...went up old chute/hawkins...waited till bout three for descent..perfect corn all the way to sandy glcier.  crux was getting back to lume saddle as skin would not stick to skis...never punched a slot..dodged bullet there.

When do YOU reach 70 years old?

Jill is 71 years old and I am chasing right behind. ;)
2~4" of soft slush on top of denser slush above ~6000', then just deeper slush, but firm and bumpy snow in the forest.  Haven't seen corn snow yet :(
Yup. I carefully considered it and left. Going back better prepared tonight or tomorrow am.
What snow conditions did you find for skiing?
Either bring tevas or wade with bare feet in shells with liners and socks in pack.  Fast moving water has considerable force, anything above knee deep requires careful consideration.
Ah thanks, appreciate the info! I misinterpreted the closure info! You saved me some trouble along Bean :).

Thanks for the report!

Is the Stafford Creek now open, or are they still logging?

I'm not extremely familiar with the Teanaway area, but I've seen winter reports where people stay entirely on the east side of Bean Creek to get to Earl. Did you not do that because the snow levels are too high and it would not be easy?

Thanks!

We occupied the Teanaway 4/15-4/20 crossing the growing creeks every day.  Crossing Beverly creek at 4am on our last day there was "interesting".  Those kitty tracks were fun to see and a wee bit intimidating!  Had to turn up the tunes to let him now we were near ;).
FYI, we never skied Earl. Other peaks in the area were holding better snow conditions.

I put a very short Video on the TAY Facebook page snowing Ingalls creek near its end at the Ingalls Creek Trailhead. Happens every year but more quickly than usual this season. All the fish are getting violently relocated...
I can't wait to see the pictures.  It's a line I've deemed about for the last 20 years.  Congrats on getting it in relatively perfect conditions!
Wow, makes me want to get out.  Great pics!
yeah Zap!  great to read that you and Jill are back in the Sierras for another spring season!
Looks like perfect weather, I didn't like the sound of the escape however, that can be a luge in the best of conditions!
