That was a great time... on the drive and hike up there, Vince and I kept thinking that the cool temps and fog weren't exactly a recipe for a great for a slush cup. Turned out to be wrong ;D
I keep checking back here to see if JW's got a video up yet :-)
Keep the photos coming...
I can't wait to see Vincent's near drowning - from my position at the top of the snowfield, I could only hear it. (hope someone got film of Matt's successful attempt where Vince failed too....

I was a bit worried when I pulled up at 8:59 and snoslut said he thought that the lack of other contenders meant that it had been cancelled. However, I thought this cannot be and I was content to turn my engine off and wait to see if the troops showed up...I mean afterall they said 9ish....And I was not disappointed...soon there were gaggles of slush cup contenders.
What a blast!!! I am definitely going to slush again next year....in fact I may even be a slush junkie!! ;...

It was a fine, fine day - thanks for the fun, friends. Special thanks go to JW for organizing the event and to Allyson for tending my brats - excellent work all the way around.
Dagnabbit! I just knew that would happen.
We're planning on heading back in August with people who are "motivated" (i.e. in shape). Think it'll still be good then?

Sorry you missed Shasta. Did the Hotlum-Wintun from Brewer Sat. Lucked out on the weather. It's a great route and trip; you gotta go!
No doubt... grins abounded.
It was really hard to pick a pinnacle run, splash or event of the day. There were so many great and creative runs and splashes and beach landings. Lots of folks, both male and female, "broke the code" this year on how to make fantastic, stand up, beach landings after skimming across the slush and then splashing across the deep water.

Can't wait to see the pictures and viddy. No amount of words could possibly describe some of the "oh shiznit I'm actually gonna get wet" facial expressions. ;D
Your pond skimming session was officially over when hyperthermea set in.
The clouds that would hinder visibility also added to the excitement. First the sound of turns on soft snow followed by large splash/laughter followed by sounds of bases on rocks with more laughter.

It was an amazing Slush Cup despite the weather. We had our first "Slush Cup" baptism. Dominic, being new to the event, came flying down the slope on his board, gathered speed, but not quite enough as he skipped across the frozen section, skimmed the water and went head first into the water just shy of the shore ;D. Dominic, welcome to BC Slush Cup denomination ;D. With 30 of us in attendance, it only got better as some folks graduated from the shallow end to the deep end. Phil...
I just wanted to say thank you to all of you that helped me attend my first slush cup. A special thanks to jw, ron, Jeanette, marco, and rick. It was a great time and I will for sure be there next year.....probably with a life vest since I seemed to be swimming more then getting in turns.(HAHA) Again, thanks to everyone for making me welcome and allowing me to come to your special event. Hope to see pics and get out with you guys again soon!!!

Hey Greg, I'll trade you a pair of never-used Tua Hydrogen w/ Superloops for your TM11s and modified TLTs.
Uhhh . . . I need them until I work out this Trab deal. Speaking of which, Mark Lengel from SLC, who will be importing Trab into the US next season, will be in WA in August with some skis to demo, probably on the Muir Snowfield. When he firms up the date, I'll post the details here.
Allyson, I'm just teasing Greg since he's such a Dynafit lover.

Amar and Lowell both have ridiculous amounts of interesting information on their websites.
As for me, well, I just have a bunch of doctored photos and elaborate hoax essays...
Amar and Jeff: how long do you think the Sunshine Route will stay in shape? Who wants to ski it? It could be a nice scouting trip for the Elliot Headwall. ;)

what the...cass on tele AGAIN?? one day on rando, next on tele...before you know it, he'll probably be strapping on a snowboard!
why not all three? ;) (refer to upcoming slush cup tr on 7/10...)
Why in the world would you want a tele setup? ;)

Rando - glad to hear the snow's smooth this year in the chutes. Last year the lower half was like a war zone this time of year; remember that?
The extra hiking (or "bonus hiking" as you put it) is unfortunate but not surprising given the snow year. Thanks for the report.
Kyle - nice pictures... keep up the good work.

I WANT THAT NORTH FACE COLOIR!!!! SKIERS LEFT OF COOPER SPUR, LOOK AT THAT SICK LINE!!!
Just a few days ago I read Lowell's summary of Doug Coomb's Couloir article about skiing it:
Jan 1998, p. 18, Coombs, Doug, "Hood: Commitment on the NE Face"
In late spring, 1997, the author skied the southerly of two couloirs on the NE face of Mt Hood. These couloirs are just north of the Cooper Spur rout...
Why in the world would you want a tele setup?
Mostly to ski with my wife on groomers. If it comes down to a choice between that and a pair of Trab Duo Sint Aeros with Dynafit Titan Races, though, it will hardly be a contest.
I might have to get a tele setup myself!
There must be some sort of inside joke here that I'm not getting. Why in the world would you want a tele setup? ;)
2. tele? uh, sure, right
Oi! some great form there ???, yikes. I'm glad there are no pics from the Flett of my first telemark casswipe-out ;D
Greg- maybe see you free-heelin' on summer corn soon?!
Nice report Amar. It looks like you had some good turns. Now what about the Sunshine Route?
Easy there Cyril. Go find a chillum or something. Don't you know that would be very dangerous?

You're essentially correct, Jonathan. It's all in the link I posted. Saari climbed the mountain, but not by the somewhat easier couloir he was going to ski, which was reported to be in good condition. On top he decided to ski a more difficult line. Sorry for the confusion, I was originally trusting my (undependable) memory.
Wrong yet again! It wasn't all in the link I previously posted, that was about Baud. It only mentions Saari in passing.

Casswipe carves the Cass-a-mark
Nice! Thanks, Jessica, I might have to get a tele setup myself!
Nice report, Jon.
Yeah, I've skied that line to the extreme skiers left down Suksdorf Ridge before. You're right, it usually does have some sweet, untracked corn over there if the sun is out.
Thanks for the report.

In the Bonanza thread, Jeff noted that even very good skiers can fall. He cited the example of Hans Saari, who hit some ice while skiing the Gervasutti Couloir near Chamonix. Now if I remember correctly, Saari was skiing the couloir sight-unseen. I believe he used the excellent tram access available in the French Alps and just dropped it from the top. The fact is that Saari is not the only one to perish that way on the Gervasutti Couloir; the first descensionis...

Looks like I may be guilty of dancing. Oh well...Runnels or not, that snow was as perfect as it gets for linking turns on steeps in July.
If Josh would hurry up and get me his video footage, we could put all this to rest with a little MPEG entertainment! ;D
Yeah, c'mon, Hummel! Jason, tell Josh to hurry up if he doesn't see this. ;)

Another interesting ski-mountaineering dicussion to have is: when taking ski pictures, is there a natural tendency to tilt the camera such that the slope looks less steep? I find there is.
I do that all the time too!
It's completely unintentionally, though I'm sure our mothers like the photos better that way. ;-)
Sam. Note the slushy runnels.

I saw your tracks, and I was definitely envious. I skied that route a couple of times last year, and it's one of my favorites. I guess it will have to wait til next year for me.
I gotta be honest here, I still hold linking turns in the highest regard even when the consequences of a fall are serious. I try to link them in a more conservative fashion than I would if a fall didn't matter, but I still feel the need to dance if I can. It could be that I'm fooling myself into thinking I could recover if something happened.
That's your choice. I think it's a bad idea. To me, good style on a steep descent means making no bobb...

I see it in other folks' photos too. I find I need to concentrate and work against this tendency in order to keep the horizon flat. Sometimes I over-compensate. Is that bad? Ok, enough of this boring analysis. Time for some STOKE.
Sam, I rotated your pic.
Fun approach scrumbling.
Pretty lakes. There were some campers there, must be nice.

Hey, speak of the devil, I layed the tracks down the nisqually chute. If I had my camera I'd post a TR to show it off. It was fun seeing my glowing white tracks in the dirty snow from even the Nisq bridge. I found it to be worth it and a blast, but I do enjoy feeling fatigue. By 7-10 I don't think I'd do it. The hike out isn't too bad. You don't have to go up the scree slopes as many do to regain the main trail. Stay low and look for the visible trail that will gradually regain the trail just a...
Sorry all, I posted some inaccurate information earlier. The Gervasutti Couloir in question on Mt-Blanc du Tacul was first skied by, who else, Sylvain Saudan. Edouard Baud was the son of a friend of Saudan's, a Chamonix guide named Anselm Baud. Somehow these details were confused in my memory. For more information see here.
The face of Maude melts out almost completel...
There were a couple of stretches in the middle of the main chute that looked quite thin (snow cover only 15-20 feet wide) - but I was looking at them from across the valley. They were passable Monday, I'm guessing they might not be passable in a week. But you'd be able so see that easily before starting up. I'd probably bring a pair of binoculars (I forgot to do that) so you can check it out closely from below. Maybe we'll hear from the person who skied it Monday afternoo...
Just a few old tracks (Snow Troll's from last week?) but no one in sight.
I bet those were Bill F's tracks.
Sounds like we need a little snow replenishment up there.
Here are some photos taken by a climbing buddy of mine.

Yeah, that's the ticket... Right. I shoulda just pulled my skins; then I'da smoked 'im on the climb. Yeah. That's what happened.
But your skins were glopping real bad, right Ron?
(That would do it.)
Good insight, Sky.
That's an outstanding picture. I'd love to have a copy of that in full resolution. The lone 4:30 skier might have been me or perhaps another solo skier who might have been lurking somewhere I couldn't see, I thought I saw a new extra ascent track as I came down. Looks like myself, the pair, and the maybe mystery skier pretty much all followed same line. An intuitively sensible idea when skiing a glacier even a pretty tame one like the Russell. On ascent, the preceding pair and I were all followi...
muir snowfield coverage is well into mid-summer conditions and its a dry trail all the way to pebble creek. we just worn trail runners to anvil rock, figuring it was faster to carry boots and skis rather than skinning up.
The contiuous snow ends at about the elevation of the pass/col next to Cowlitz Rocks...thats where we shouldered the skis and had to hike till we were on the lower paradise glacier, from there we could skate on the flats till maybe 6300ft.

...but the entertainment value wained as he lapped all of us with an extra run and climbed the same pitch again the second time before I could make it to the top...

I like THIS ONE of you, too, Robman, with the fronts of your skis sticking out in thin air... :)
Nice solo effort, Phil. I was hoping you could have made it up to Maude, but it sounds like you had a good day nonetheless. I think the Spur is a fun route. When I did it eight years ago, it was also quite sloppy (although my skis were only about 62mm underfoot at the time). You also allude it being windy. Never have I been more worried about losing my footing due to wind as I was that morning! I remember thinking that the skis could have actually been pulled...
