Seconded. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest.
The teletips discussion about Phil's photo is fairly amusing as well.

Hey Jas - checked out your trip report. Nice photos dude! I think Paul would agree 8)
Thanks for the TR. I headed up Adams for the first time this past saturday and had a blast. I was with a non-skiing friend, so I was on my feet all day, but i'm considering leaving my non-skiing friends behind next time and bringing my board instead.
Having climbed up the south side, i have a good idea of what to expect for that route, but it sounds like the SW chutes would be a better descent. A few questions that hopefully some TAYers can help me out with:

Just getting up from my nap...
I still have some pics to get up -- I'll get to it after I, ah, I know there's something else I need to do first.

Way to keep doing your thing, Ron et al. It's great to hear about people having a good time in the mountains. It's quite clear that you know how to enjoy yourselves. I'd like to trump Mad_Dog and say kudos to anyone earning turns and enjoying the freedom of the hills.

That's what I love about TAY. It's the content. There may be myriad perspectives and styles of skiing, but you are guaranteed to find plenty backcountry skiing of the human-propelled kind...

definately something I'm sad to have missed thanks for the TR
;D I am not sure the Chinese have a unified position on Devil's club though since Kam seems to actually enjoy the torture ;-)
Thanks for posting that TR Lowell.
We also stopped at the bullet hole. Beyond that the slope steepens and reversing from there isn't fun, as it was just what Ben, Josh and I had to do several years ago. My anticipation of putting myself in the same situation again wasn't something that I wanted to do. Sometimes going back to a demon you think you know is worse than the unknown.

Congrats on your trip, guys. Glad everybody stayed safe. You might find Andrew McLean's 1999 trip report interesting, if you haven't seen it. Interesting how Andrew's party found super icy conditions in a big snow year while you guys found good snow conditions in a meager year. June weather is the key. This year it was pretty snowy in June; that year, the upper mountain was in the clear much of the time.

As one would expect, he was on the ''dog route". ;)
Nice photos. Sounds and looks like a fun time.

There really isn't much route finding to get up to Snowdome.
Hey wait, what about Sunday's Dynafit girl and . . .
What "OldHouseMan" described is the way to go. The route described is the blue line in this GPS topo map. There is insufficient snow to descend the Langille glacier as our red track in the map does.
As to how will conditions will be a...
Good Man Sky. Congrats on one hell of a sweet descent. Looks like a nice ski.
I was somewhat concerned that the snow on this portion, which hadn't even given me pause on the ascent, was not holding an edge nearly as well as I'd hoped. Every turn ended with several feet of skidding.
Yeah, I think I'll just stick with the climbing.... ;)
Ditto to what Ron said, and kudo's to you ski adventure seekers, play hard and be safe ;D.
I'm up from my "geezer" nap ;), but a little lack in being creative with additional TR info, other than it was a great trip with fond memories that shall last a lifetime. Mt Adams has always been a favorite of mine :D. Some photos HERE. ;D 8)

Any routefinding difficulties for one who has never been there?
There really isn't much route finding to get up to Snowdome.
The Timberline trail trail head is on the south side of the Cloud Cap camp ground. Take this trail for a short distance where it forks, take the right trail heading up and over the moraine and down to Eliot Creek going west. Cross the creek and head up the other side of the moraine. At the top of the moraine as...
I love your accent, man! If I hang out with you guys, I might even learn some French! Besides, the Chinese and the French have a similar opinion of hiking through Devil's Club . . .
Nice report guys. "Chris and Skip on the pursuit of the disappearing glacier"...sounds like a fun adventure ;-)
Hey now Greg...what's up with this deal of making fun of my accent?
"Zere is no word for boosh-whack een French"!

I will have the chance to drive past Hood next week (i.e. not driving all the way down just to ski, but will be in the area) and have a couple of questions.
Any routefinding difficulties for one who has never been there?
How much snow do you think might vanish in a week's time? (My joy-o-meter for turns is likely to be set at close to 50 per cent altitude ratio.)

If Skier2 was having explosions just above the bergschrund, imagine the intestinal fortitude necessary above the variation.
Skier number 2? Appropriately named, I guess. 8)
To be clear, the intestinal difficulties were NOT related to the climb. I've never had any altitude issues. If not for my stomach bug, I'm pretty confident that skiers 3, 4, and 5 along with myself, would have finished the route, then waited a...
So can we expect aerial photos of you charging the route in the full-on hardman conditions? Or, were you not cognizant of the identification number of the aircraft, whilst frolicking in that sea of icy white murder?
Wow, cool serac shot Phil! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get any skiing pictures.
Jeff, Paul knew just what I meant. I guess it's not really pied à plat, it's more of a demi-pied à plat. It requires a lot of traversing, almost like setting a steep skin track, but it's much less strenuous than being on the front points.

Approx route Sky skied, with red dot where the rest of us stopped.
Sky tearing it up :-) - he is the tiny dot just to the right of the variation bulge.

(Meanwhile, skier2 was performing a Cascade poopfecta all over lower Mowich Face)
:D
Congrats! Glad to hear you guys made it out safe and sound. I was thinking about you guys on Sunday.
We crossed paths on the trail, early on your hike in. I was the one that offered encouragement about the Russell, only to have my eyes bug out when you mentioned the Mowich Face. Wow. Conditions on that route looked sweet as I scanned it wi...
I'm just glad skier2 had intestinal distress, and skier3 and skier4 had tele gear, otherwise they would have had no excuse for not continuing, and I would have had to go with them!! yikes...
But luckily, instead I got to enjoy sitting in the breezy freezing cold shade on a rock outcrop at 11400ft, with skier3 and skier4, where we all whimpered like little babies wanting to crawl back into a womb. 8)

Oh well that just sounds like awesome snowboarding conditions, y'all, I don't know why I wasn't invited? ??? lol
MikeC, my telemarking buddy. Transmorgrafied from a lurker to a poster at last. Welcome to TAY ;D
Planning on an overnighter soon. PM me if your in ;D

What's guesses by those that were there about either Russell or Flett having any promise by August? I've seen the Flett in August be largely blue ice (with firn/last seasons snow in sad little ribbons, which I skied), but am not as familiar with what the Russell will do later season.
The snow layer on top of the ice is very thin in many places and melted out in others, I expect that with another couple of weeks of warm weather there will be more...
I clearly recall that remnant glacial lagoon from our last trip out there, and had visions of you two skimming across it after flying down a ribbon-patch!
A 'slush-cup' encore (i.e. skimming across the glacial lagoon) was considered, but upon closer inspection the water landing appeared too long to reach the rocky lakeside from the snow's edge; hence a likely frigid landing (or a hard boulder-smacking landing if one made it across the lake) and sign...
What a fun day - thanks for coming up with the idea to go there Greg! I had never been on the Flett before - great place and almost nobody around...Getting to the snow was somewhat long, but a great trail and all the nice flowers on the way make it go by pretty quickly...

Haha... was this Sunday morning? It was likely a woman yelling "SKY". :)
Wow, the thought that I could be mistaken for Sky. There must have been some optical effect to make me look in shape or something.
Yeah I forgot to mention the band of 5 skiers and 1 climber at the mowich lake trailhead. Not to mention that the one named Sky passed me on the gravel road just below the parking lot. Pretty exciting for me to...
Thanks for the awesome day Chris. The Mountain sure was in all her glory. The skiing was pretty fine as well.
I'm almost considering getting an AT set-up after this.
You've been considering it for a while...do it!
The 'climber' made it down the DC just fine. :)
Jeff, I believe Sky meant he was positioning his feet perpendicular to a front-pointing position. If the snow isn't water ice, it approximates the traditional french technique quite well.
While I wasn't willing to commit, it was facinating watching someone who could. Heck, I'm almost considering getting an AT set-up after this. There is so much more control - climbing and skiing (no tele toe on the climb, no freehill on the descent). This route was #1 on my list, and I'm glad a local and friend was able to ski it, get to the bottom and tell me about it. Now I don't have to go back for a 3rd time.
I'm going fishing next weekend...

Excellent, Sky. Wish I'd known, I would have liked to watch.
Damn, another TR I got gripped just reading!
Hey Sky, How do you flat-foot up a 50degree face in tall, plastic ski boots?
Conditions were perfect for moving quickly up the face on crampons. The surface was icy corn that held a flat-footed crampon effortlessly; no front-pointing was necessary.

Nice work sky. Btw what's the pucker factor on that descent? By the way you described it, sounded like a can crusher for sure. ;D
Damn, Sky, I'm glad you made it. Congratulations on the descent, and more so for surviving.
Did the 'climber' get down the DC ok?

Jesus! :D I got scared just reading your report!
You are one sick puppy. 8)
Congratulations, absolutely amazing but scary too!

On a shwack scale, though, this area is quite pleasant (only a BW-2). Nice heather covered polished rock most of the way if I remember...

Your tracks looked really sweet from lower Ptarmigan Ridge yesterday, way to get some sweet July corn.
looks like it was an awesome day, you guys! very nice, very nice. great pics too greg. :)
skip--looks like you and the wipe had a sweet day connecting patches! glad the choss didn't make you take your skis off. ;) crazy about the shrinkage of the glacier...
Yep, Just above pebble creek for the start of the skinning. Lots of people in various forms, some dressed like they are about to summit Everest and some in jeans and tee-shirts, but that's what makes it so much fun.
Send me a PM JibberD when you want to go up again.I'm
planning on going up one afternoon and spending the night at Muir so I've got fresh legs for some serious yo-yoing next day! you want to try an overnighter and yo-yo the good stuff at the top?

I started up the flett around 8am. When I crossed onto the Russell, someone started yelling at me. I'm not quite sure what. Perhaps "SCOTT" or maybe "STOP". Couldn't really tell. But I guess it seemed important enough for them to scurry up lower ptarmigan ridge to yell it again. I wonder what they were yelling about.
Haha... was this Sunday morning? It was likely a woman yelling "SKY". :)
Chris, I'll read your Muir reports anytime. And climbing back for seconds, well that's pretty burly.
Where did you put your skis on? Pebble Creek?
Were there lots of climbers in the vicinity?
I'm hoping to go back to Muir within the next two weekends. Gotta keep that streak going...
Maybe we can put together a posse of TAYers and make a day of it.

More Puple flowers (unsure of what they are)
I think these are Davidsons Penstemon or Menzies' Penstomon. I've also heard them called Beard Tongues.
This was a great trip. Awesome views of the Eliot glacier and the North face. The snow that is left is still in good shape.
So...I guess we'll be making the march back up there in a month to get...
