Thanks for posting O. Got any pictures of fresh snow/fresh tracks?
So have you been up there this time of year in the last few years? I'm just curious, thinking of a baseline from which to compare, "Never seen it so broken up..." I might like to crawl up the CD route some time soon, maybe. I hear there's some good skiing off the top.
Oyvind and I skied the CD from the Summit on April 23 this year. &nb...
The freshies on 2" were just enough to hide the blue ice from stuff you could actaully turn on here are a few pics.

Jason_H: yep, I knew who your father was :)
And Robert, I agree, it wasn't very early, but for October turns it sure seemed so considering I left home at 6am (though in spring I've been known to leave by 430am-uggh!)
And snoslut...your name came up a few times-glad I could hang with other ski circles out there and bridge yet another gap btwn groups
Keep dancing and it will keep coming...

I'd guess it's probably worse than last year?
Pics from September 18th climb.
Ugh!
look at all those freshiez dude!
the dude with the gnarly red goat puts the empty beers in your boot!
and lara- it was not that early!

yeah... but how does it compare to last year? We were up there in mid-October. The lower glacier, below 7000ft, was "more broken up than I'd ever seen it" (I've been up there in fall for the past 5 or 6 years probably, and the snowfield/depression below heliotrope ridge had always been smooth with almost no crevasses, but last year it was full of holes).
However, above 7000ft the route was fine (a bit circuitous on a snowboard, but not so bad).

Sky - just coming out of summer after a BAD snow year, I'm sure it looks worse than our Sept./Oct. turns up there in '02 and in '03.
So...lapaz you skied with my old man. Ha. I'll let you guess which one
Here's a hint...he doesn't have a gnarly red goat.
He also puts da beers in da ski boot so doesn't forget.

Lapaz do you think it will last until tomorow?
Upon reading your report I think I might have to take a mental health day away from work. :)

Welcome aboard, Oyvind. I believe we've talked skiing before, I'm Greg from Louie's in Ballard . . .

Nice way to nail two month's worth of turns, Oyvind.
And Welcome (now, officially) to TAY.
Happy Skiing ;)

Thanks for the Hood report. Nice work getting in turns despite the weather.
Congrats on getting your 12 months in, no small feat this year; and thanks for the inspiring report.
Ahhh, It is always great to see the Wasatch contingent posting here.
We haven't had much of a chance back in Utah to ski this late so that is awesome!!!!!
Should you ever find yourself up here in Seattle, definitely look me up as I am a former Wasatch tele freak.
I think I am the only Utahn that is a regular on this board and I have had the pleasure to ski with a bunch of the gang here. These people are great!!
Keep the streak going.

G3baron185, I have removed all but one of the posted photos so that your report will be in line with our posting guidelines, which include that there be only one photo/thread for trip reports. I also added a link to your gallery so that readers can see the rest of your photos. Thanks for the report and congratulations on getting your September turns in such a spectacular setting!

Congrats, FF! The more Utahns the better, as far as I'm concerned . . . come to think of it, I was one for a while.
Nice website, too!

Thanks. I see how year round turns can get addicitive.
We need to get a Utahn on your "year round skier" roster!!!!

Thanks for the post, G3, it looks pretty damn good from here, water ice or no. If it wasn't such a long drive, I'd be there.
Welcome, James.
And congradulations on your 12 month streak!
We'll look forward to hearing more from the Wasatch contingent.

The stuff that the climber is "handling" doesn't look much like powder to me. The picture certainly was not taken on Saturday, as Baker was free of clouds. And there is the small matter of the subject being 4,000' higher than my destination.
I have some great shots of Saturday's spectacular scenery but unfortunately my photo gallery is having some issues at the moment. Hopefully, they will be available before we actually get some powder to ski.

Ah yes..same day last year was pretty darn epic. If I remember correctly, there were 15 + of us random TAYers up on Muir the day Kam shot his photo (um, yeah, I hit that, too!). Incredibly good memories-freaky to think about the conditions up on Muir now. I'm every hopeful this year is going to be great :)
Can't wait to get out there for some more turns...maybe even this weekend?

High Five, Adrianne,
Way to keep up the streak.
Pray for October snow ;)

Do not fear. Powder season appears to have already started on Baker, as seen in this photo from cc.com.

TAY this year is tough; way to go.
But last year, we had good early season, and no real season. Hopefully, this inverse relationship will hold true this year as well, and having no early season will translate into having a sick winter. :)

Cleaned that crack out real well, didn't I? As I recall, Lowell stopped and I was going to crank a nice swooping turn to stop just below him, but for some odd reason, my ski kept wanting to follow the fall line. Then I achieved one-ness with the Muir. ;)
Yeah, it's a heck of a thing to become famous for...
But, as I recall, the snow up high was real nice - and I have photos of Lowell to prove it - and the day was one of the nicer October days I can remember.  ...

Lowell had a good (?) story about Dave catching his ski in one of those meltwater slots during a turn last September and I definitely did not want that to happen to me.
Here's a picture:

It was taken last October. Dave_R and I went up after all the good skiing everybody else had last fall. Kinda like what happened to everybody else last weekend. (Not that our d...
Mark, it was actually pretty fun, and there were a number of those good stretches. All of the hazards, visible and especially hidden, were what made the skiing a bit worrisome for me. Lowell had a good (?) story about Dave catching his ski in one of those meltwater slots during a turn last September and I definitely did not want that to happen to me.
Nice photos, Charles. Considering all the moaning and groaning and caterwauling about conditions, the Muir looks pretty good (especially for Lowell, who seemed to find quite a number of "good stretches" to ski).
Thanks, Mark - cool to see so many famous TTipsters in one place!
Hey Mark, Looks like you had fun. The convention here is to generally post only one photo per thread, though you can create links to your other photos. You can edit your post by hitting the 'Modify' link.
all we needed to make the day complete was the ron j gang in the parking lot cookin' up the bbq. 8)
Thanks Allyson, glad you all had a fun time on that funked-ified snow. We were over yonder checking out some new territory for this next year's great snowpack we are going to have ;D. Would have been a perfect day for the "bar-b", but it's all put away until next summer >:(.
...the funkiest conditions you can imagine: a patch of week-old snow here, glacial ice there, slush, runnels, man-eating crevasses, mud, gravel, scree, candy ice shell with flowing water beneath, stream beds cut into ice, mini flash floods, sun cups, micro mud flows forming tiny deltas before your eyes...It's all there, you really couldn't ask for more...
i agree, jibberd. that is a perfect description!
now kam, do you have to make...
Wolfs,
Those lakes are just past the entrance to the cirque that you climb to reach Meany Crest. There is a steep talus covered peak that would make a traverse of the ridge from Panhandle pointless - might as well go up through the cirque.
You could go over panhandle gap and climb the heather to reach Meany Crest from the Ohanapecosh side - it isn't much farther. However, the Cirque is the way to go because it normally has a great ski line. My guess is that if the Cirqu...

I've been on the fryingpan in late August.
Here is an old trip report for those interested. When enough snow falls, it's not bad:

It really really sucks. >:(
i don't know what you're talking about. looks good to me. ;D
... so it's not as white as last year.. speaking of last year, this was Muir exactly one year ago.. 3k of pow!
I've never tried it myself, but there are two points of data that made me think that a very-late-summer trip to Fryingpan might be a bit of a bust:
1) Getting up to where the Meany Crest rounds off is already enough of a PITA in spring/early summer because the boulders and cliffs on the E facing toward the Summerland shelter melt out fairly quickly, and climbing choss at that angle and that looseness is tiring and dangerous. Is there a viable climbers track to Meany Crest (either from shelter...

Correction,as usual I got the date wrong, it was the 17th.
Participants where.

Alisa Siebert( First time, brought alpine skis, has been sucessfully converted and will be taking up backcountry skiing and is now in the process of pouring over gear reviews and selecting equipment) ;)
Richard Siebert- Non-skiiing participant. Made it to 9,000 ft.
See it wasn't that bad if we managed to convince a newbee to spend $1200 plus on a set-up. 8)

It can only get better ??? I was up with the crew on the 17th as well. It sure as heck wasn't a great day, but it was a day. I managed a few smiles and made a few turns not too bad for a September Saturday! OH, I almost forgot the matching bruises on each hip ;D
I was with JibberD and group on the 18th that went to Muir.
It was the most hideous skiing you can imagine.
It was also one of the most fun and hilarious days I've ever had on skis.
The measure of a days's skiing IMO is not the quality of the snow , but the amount of fun you have. ;D
In that respect Muir on 9/18 was excellent. 8)

This weekend was soccer with the boys - I'll have to show my true colors and choose soccer over the scratchy runnels in the sunday Muir thread... It's good to get out, but better to have a functional bases for the upcoming season. I'll wait for the next "new" snow.
On a positive note, my son Brett is begging for tele boots for his birthday. He's turning 12 next week and with his 8 years of downhill, he ought to make a fine little tele rippah'.

Wow ???
Good info, Scott, the kind that could save (or prompt - depending on one's appetite) a trip in there.
Thanks.

Nice work on the solid year O-H-M!!
I hope to report the same for this jibber in two short months.
I'm thinking guys like us who started our streak in this "winter of our discontent" year should have a pretty solid core to build a nice, long streak on. What do you think?
woooooo-hooooo, right back at ya.
