Yes, the entire ventilator pull out is marked with these signs. Because they mentioned towing, we didin't feel very comfortable parking there. If this is some kind of security concern, it's a little ironic that the road we used for parking seemed to lead right to the "back side" of the ventilator area, but there were no signs restricting parking there. I was intent on looking into this after our trip but then got sick. Maybe state highway patrol would be a place to start the...
Hi Charles,
Are you saying that the entire ventilator pull out is now off limits to parking?
Does anyone know what the situation is and why?
Any enlightenment on the situation would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Ah - you mean one day again. Just in case the TAY vortex is causing you to loss your mind (which happens to me on occasion) - we did ski together before . .
Jeff how clumsy of me. :-[Of course I remember now. Shasta two years ago when I was Silas Wild's driver for the weekend. :DThat was a great trip.

Chris,
Thanks for toughening my wife up while I languish at home with my arm in a sling. Here are a couple of pictures from the "triple ibuprofen tour".
Thanks for posting the pictures Michael. I'm beginning to think you put the voodoo on me just because you are stuck at home with a skiing injury. There's not a doll with sk...
Sounds like a fun trip and a good call to hire Martin Volken to help you make the tour the best that it could be, given the conditions. His reputation as the region's best mountain guide is becoming legendary and he's building up a huge karma bank account with the backcountry ski community in the region.
Hope your "chicken head" injury recovers quickly, Scottie ;)

Even if the skiing wasn't great the sceenery was out of this world! I havent gotten pics downloaded yet.
Mr Volken is a serious steward of the wilderness, I like his politics. His fund raiser for Northwest Avalanche Center is coming up next weekend.
I cant recall a trip where Chris doesnt run out of cigs and need to rush off to the store (fastest car packer I ever saw).

Sounds like someone shoulda paid YOU for the tour! ;) Hey, Scottie, I'm not skiing this weekend. Several things going on (all good) and the rain sounds icky anyway. Sorry to be such a heretic.

I tried that very same route more than 30 years ago with Pete Doorish. A long walk up through huge piles of debris. We gave up when the slide danger seemed to get too high, as the day warmed up.

Jeff Huber,
Sorry we didn't introduce ourselves, I would love to ski with you one day

If it's the one that I think it is, then yes you could, trumpetsailor. Perhaps one of the tour party will confirm or deny this claim.
Where, exactly, was the "droopy cornice"? Can you get above it by following the ridge from Melakwa lake?
JibberD,
I resemble that remark! You shall pay when you get back from Germany. I will take you on a tour and I will leave my cigs in the car and you can try and keep up as I skin like a Slovenian in F1's and spandex back to car in a nicotine starved fit!

Yep, I was there Jeff. If it was a big white truck with a camper shell that was me.
I parked right next to you! What a small world.
Hey chicken-head Chris, that's my new name for you...chicken-head Chris ;D Well at least for this reply.
Sounds like you all had a grinder of a tour, but a tour nonetheless and that is always a good thing. Also a good thing to be with a guide who is wise enough to change plans when things are looking questionable. That Mr. Volken has his act together.
I guess the "my name is Chris and I'm an ex-smoker" thing is off for now ??? Perhaps another day. R...

Hey Chris - Where you at Crystal on Saturday? If so, I think I parked right next to you. I didn't notice until I was leaving my car - I recognized the truck and sig. I was the gray Honda CR-V (I downgraded cars recently)
Hey Jonathan,
I used your instructions to make leashes for my rando race skis. The leashes worked great at the VertFest last weekend, although I need to experiment with different strength zip ties. Thanks!

After two seasons of Dynafit brakelessness, I had some extra brakes available and mainly for the novelty factor I put brakes on my two "heavy" setups: Mira rock skis and new Trab Duo FreeRando, both with Scarpa Matrix retrofitted with Raichle Flexon tongues. Rest assured though that my new lightweight ski mountaineering setup is brakeless: Trab Duo Sint Aero with Dynafit Evo boots (i.e., basically just an updated classic TLT 4 S/Pro/whatever).

Nice shots...........I was up at Meadows last week about that time and the pow was over my head. I'm already jones'in for more. Let's hope the pineapple predicted for this weekend doesn't come to pass and melt away some of that good spring base :(
rtghk--decker without the crusty meteorite chunks all over the place?? i can't imagine! ::) glad you had a good time up there, again in feb...lucky!!! ;)

I noticed you were skiing on the Trab Duo Freerando. I just bought a pair. So far I like them in everything except cropped up crud, where I found they were less stable than my REXs. Of course the light weight of the Trabs is great for uphill. How do you like them?

It seems like the amount of bushwhacking could be inversely proportional to the depth of the snowpack. Make your own extrapolations, but I definitely want to return to this route. Not sure when, though.
Lowell, thanks for the additional information and the photo. Conditions must have been confidence bolstering. I'd be a bit intimidated by dropping into the lower cirque without inspection.

Sounds like your timing was good. Glad to hear that you got some of the good goods.
I suspect that "several" is more than my "several" knowing the cast of characters. ;D
Your hut trip sounds very interesting. I would love to explore that area a lot more.

It's the "Mer-de-Glace" of the Cascades! Without the gondola, the other people, the food, the 10 mile glacier, the elevation, ...
I love that line because it feels so european; the snow nearly diving right into the valley.
Oh,
That makes me soooo homesick!!!!!

Looks like snocrummie pass the other day, 'cept with more sunshine.
I did a spring ski of that route some years ago and vowed never to return - this video shows why. Beautiful place, but skiing not worth the bushwack IMHO. You've gotta get up it once though to say you're a Cascade climber/skier.
During the 1985 ski descent of the north flank of Whitehorse, Gary Brill and Jens Kieler ascended the standard Lone Tree Pass route. Conditions were so good that Jens decided to ski straight down the Snow Gulch, while Gary elected to return the way they came. The inset photo on the cover of Rainer Burgdorfer's 1986 guidebook ("Backcountry Skiing in Washington's Cascades") was taken by Gary high on Whitehorse before the two of them split up. Jens displays fine form skiing powd...
nice slide show, jw!! keep that winter coming out there!! ;)
Want to try it again some time, Steve?

Took me awhile to respond, but that was an incredible weekend. Jen and I were there on both days and skied over 9k of untracked powder in the trees! Great skiing with Cass and Justin on Saturday and then on Sunday we led our first Mountaineers trip...it was really a good time! Here is a slide show of both days ....Yodelin Tours....enjoy ....Jerry PS Allyson we miss you!

Good stuff indeed, and great report Jessica! Here are my photos:

Hell yes you will. Skykilo. One bad ass cascade hardman.

Way to get after it. Whitehorse has been floating up my list lately too. last 3 days on skis? Don't you have to work some time!?
Ja, Androolus had wonderful touring under the light of moon. After night skiing at ski arces, I skinned up hyak and pitched my tent. And then I was off for some midnight touring under the moon and stars. Did some short runs on the backside ala charles (that is) I hit the road and skied back up sans skins...that's right no transition. I was on fischer sbounds...waxless metal edge slightly shaped skis...A little skinnier than old school alpine. Then I toured about in hidden valley. Got to bed...
Indeed! Timmy T yanked my chain around 1:00 pm yesterday, he worked some magic to free up the afternoon and we started skinning around 2 pm. Sun? Haven't skinned up Mt. Snoq. in the daylight in a long time, and the sun was actually strong and making things warm up. We stopped at 5200' and headed down in the already reported "super deep" snow. Little heavier due to the sunshine, but still incredibly fun. Looks like we were tracks 3 and 4 down the phantom and through the...

Think I saw your track on the way down hedonaut, wondered how your outing went. 6k? You almost made the summit? My run -
Almost too much snow - kept getting in my eyes (glasses caked so they came off after first over-the- head face shot), up nose and in mouth whenever I turned. Sooo, tried to keep speed up and stay on top, but speed sucked 'cause then the raging snow falling out of the sky blinded me...kept racing my slough lines and trying to avoid trees...4-5&...
