OK ,so I missed an r in "Darryl". Ron, I can't open your red-x shots either, from right-click or double-click. Any ideas?
Sounds like another good Alpymarr (solo?) tour. Spring is cool; it'll firm up. :) Hey, are you around at all this summer and available?
Very nice report, Mack.
And a fun day for sure. It was interesting watching the different personalities of the dogs. There was only one time when Chuggie was not all over the place:

I've tried this route three times by three route and never connected the Funnel with the upper snowfield due to spooky snow and that slide for life below the funnel - so excellent show!
I think the only thing keeping this as a more popular destination (other than the certain death if the upper snowfield slides on you, as mentioned above, and you get thrown over the cliff below the Funnel - not a place for rookie snow evaluation), is the parking at the road end is SNo Park...

Specifics of the snow: west facing slopes 5700'-4500' had half an inch of corn on a firm base, east facing had a couple inches of powder under the corn and light crust, but a firm base too. Below 3500' on lower angle slopes the corn was deeper and softer. The rain should make the next sunny period even better spring skiing!
Hi Joe,
The key to skiing low on the Pyramid Creek road system is to take FS-7065, which forks left off FS-70 about 1.5 miles above the sno-park and then rejoins it about 2.5 miles higher. The USGS 7.5 minute topo doesn't show this road connecting, but it does. It is the most popular route for snowmobilers, because it is north facing and holds snow longer. FS-70 ascends a SW facing slope above the Greenwater river between 3200-3400 feet. This section gets a lot of sun and melts o...

When you say the SW face of crown are you talking about going into the Morris Creek area or the Pickhandle basin ???
Pickhandle -Morse is S-SE
Awesome trip guys!
To get to 1 1/2 miles from the car with snow is really quiet good.
Did you encounter much cliff action in the forested area to detour the planned trail?
Did you keep the GPS on the entire trip? If so what were the trip totals?
Often times the accuracy of my GPS is somewhat plus or minus 50 feet especially in dense trees where the signal gets limited.
Congratulations on your accomplishment.

Hey Joe, good info. and we'll be up Bullion/East/Cement on Sunday, upper parking lot @8:30. Call this evening.
Way to make the good call, Joe & friends.
Now my day is complete...I now know I could survive on the Ice Worms if I lost my pack. Nice post!
Next week is looking promising ;D ;D Im game for some of those other peaks we had to bag because of weather
No, I haven't, but maybe you can find out more here:

Did you see any worms in it? I saw three the other day... they looked like ice worms, except slightly thicker and longer. "snow worms" ???
Yes stoudema. I use a 66 prior for pow/corn and 65 voile for corn/steeps/pow.
I think it gets skied a bit. It's pretty recognizable. I know I skied it years ago, just because I saw it off the road, and thought "Man that looks like fun."
For whatever the reason or rhyme, powder should never be neglected. Such a good thing is never meant to last.
I couldn't agree more! By the way snowslut, what type of board do you ride? Are you splittin' it?
Maybe slackcountry cause I've been slacking and going for the super easy stuff.

I eventually wound up in the backcountry of Crystal. The exact location is of no particular importance.
In the end keeping as much surface area on the snow proved more efficient allowing for a somewhat straight shot up East Peak. Once on top Kyle, Preston and Alex took a quick lap into Cement Basin while I took pictures and marinated.

Many thanks to those of you that have taken the time to post your results to my efforts to include pictures in the original post of this thread.
It has always been a mystery to me why the pictures appear for some but not all. I don't have any background or training in computers so I'm somewhat ill equipped to trouble shoot such matters and the inability to duplicate the problem on my own machine certainly exacerbates the dilemma.

Damn ,I knew I should have left the couch....nice work 8)
I like how "saturated debris" is an asset on this trip ;)
Yeah, I'm always coveting that line every time I pass it, too.
Nice to see that Martin isn't the only one that skis it.

Nice to hear of your travels, Zap.
Keep it up. We'll still have plenty of summer corn for you when you get back.
We're stockpiling a bunch of it in MRNP for you... no one else can ski on it!! ;)

Hey Zap:
I think Paula and I got the goods in that Feb storm. By the sounds of it I think you need a fire extinguisher down there instead of avy gear.

I'll tell no one... Way to go get it!
Howdy Zap & Jill,
We're almost as disappointed as you - since we were looking forward to the stream of wonderful 'spring in the Sierra' reports we've come to expect from you! But you're in luck if you return early. Ron J stumbled on the proverbial eye in the middle of the storm - blue sky and corn in the south cascades! As of today, the water is literally pouring out of the mountains - the Snoqualmie's are running brown and high, and every crack...

I also missed whatever clues revealed the location as Crystal. No soup for me!
Uh, Sky, you have to follow Ron's link: "More pictures HERE".

I'm using Mac OS X and both the Safari (mostly) and Firefox browsers. In Firefox, I see no evidence of your inline photos at all--nothing!
Amar, I also use Mac OS X and both browsers do get the pictures.
Nice shots! Looked like a great day!
Your secrets good with me!

Ron et al, nice call on the weather window. By the way, I can't see any of your 3 inline pics, I just see broken image [?] symbols.
Amar, I have the same trouble with the photos, seeing a box with a red x in it. What I have to do is right click on the box with the red x, click on properties, highlight the WHOLE photo URL, open a new browser, then paste the ph...
Great tr ronj. Looks like the gang had a good time and lucked out with the weather. Reminds me of ya never know unless ya go.
I couldn't resist.
Yeah missing out on all the sales from concessions. Sucker!
Mother Nature - 1
Crystal Management - ZERO

Three of us were nearby on the 10th trying to get the goods before the storm. Had great luck on south backcountry loop with up to 4 inches of wet new on four summit hills. Exited off Bullion Peak and out the basin. Only saw tracks near the very end. Lots of interesting black clouds threatening all day. Would like to hear from a Baker bc from the 11th since that lift service was closed as well but over 4" of rain would have been lots of "fun".

I think they will appear if you right click on the red x and then click "show picture" (you may need to go to the pictures first and then come back). Try it, if you would, and let me know if that works. I'm in a constant state of befuddlement over this picture thing.

RonJ, you wily old fox! 8) You know I was sitting at home on Sunday and said to Stewie," lets go skin up Crystal " but we couldn't motivate ourselves. You don't just talk about it , you do it. ;D Puts the rest of us to shame! :-[

To our surprise we all stayed dry as a bone ...
I wasn't dry as a bone!!! With a wind chill of 65, I was sweating like a horse.
What a great idea it was to change the reader board at the Greenwater fire department to state that Crystal Mountain was closed!!
Nope - right click "show picture" step just leaves me with red x's still.
Man - if they were a New England ski area, they'd be laughed out of the region for having closed for a predicted rain event!

Just wondering if you bother skiing anything but the groomers ;). I took a quiet day of yard work, dog walks, and meal preparations. I heard Scotsman was still convalescing from his chickenhead strike.
I'm starting to get really spoiled ;), last week, skiing wonderful snow inbounds at White Pass, this week Crystal, in bounds CLOSED, was more of the best. We had such a fantastic time yesterday, you would have thought it was our own private ski area ;D. When you think about that, it really was ;D. What an awesome day :).

I've always liked that line. Way to get after it.
Thanks for the post John. Good info to contemplate for tomorrow.
Looks like you did all right with conditions, if I hadn't been trying to get the OWA on our Exchange server recovered from the DST patch, I'd have been able to go too. Oh well, job security. Hope the weather window holds tomorrow.
