Very cool, looks like a great trip.
Thanks for posting the video - I miss that place and it was nice to have some of my memories stirred.

just like a European...all apres-ski no actual skiing. bet those other shots were just photo-shopped....
Perfect timing. Thanks for the fresh report! and with photos.
jee, my guess was mudpie, brownies and cool whip, and jello pudding with corn...
'Twas the drop into Christmas
when all through the chute.
Not a sound could be heard
not even a shout.
The passes were hung
on our jackets with care.
In hopes that Ski Patrol
would not be there!
The skiiers were nestled
all snug in their boards.
While visions of sugar-snow
danced in their gourds.
With Ry on his teles,
and me riding randy.
We contemplated
some sweet Christmas candy!

What exactly is dessert1? Looks something like what my folks like sometimes: ball of ice cream with some of those dutch choco crumbles and Bols Eierlikor spread over generously. Except yours (unless it's an optical illusion vs the scale of the hand) is 10 times as big as any human should ever attempt eating.

Some of those look more like an eggs benedict dish than a dessert.

Nasty looking slide on the RHS of the photo too!
Good eye! In fact there was some big warming a few days ago, and lots of windslab avalanches everywhere, so we had to choose carefully where to ski yesterday. Russ, the plan is to ski two weeks in Sudtirol and Dolomiti, not sure if we will get there, then two weeks in North Norway (Lyngen alps) and two weeks in...
Nice, thanks for sharing. If we head down to OR again, we'll have to look you up.

Day # 2 - Spend the day at Alyeska resort in Girdwood... best lift service experience of my life. Skied North America's longest and most continuous double black diamond: Christmas Chute. Not the Christmas where everyone gets presents and turkey... no, this is the kind of Christmas where the tree catches fire and burns the house down: a 2400 foot, 40 degree, underwear soiling couloir....
Silas - thought you were starting the trip in Norway - plans change?
Thanks all! Hopefully there will be more reports to come. There is still plenty of winter left
Wow!

And so it begins! Have fun. :).
Hey! I thought you were going to call me when you headed up to the mountains! ;D
Nice zipper tracks coming off the ridge. Have fun over there, Silas.

Hey there....i was the narrator on this TR. Thanks for all the good comments, I find it very helpful to analyze TRs after the fact and learn from other folks' insights. Our group has some descent miles under it's belt: one ex ski patrol from Squaw and the other two have toured for 6+ seasons. Regardless, i think we missed the call on this one. Thanks Scott -- just to be clear, I wasn't there, just posting it for my friend. And yeah, I think they did a great job handling the situation.
Dang Marcus, glad everyone is okay. Sounds like despite the scary emerging circumstances, you guys handled the situation well. Props and thanks for yours and your friends' wellbeing!
Apparantly I'm the wanker that jimmyclimbs if referring to, although I have never forgotten anyone at the yurts. I can't remember exactly his issue. Yes, the yurts have been a little rough over the last three years as I moved from a guided/catered operation to a self catered and self-guided operation where I don't have as much control over the experience. I could not find much information about jimmyclimbs except for this email: I tried your card to place the 25% deposit for the b...
Very nice! Thanks for posting and all the good info etc....
Hey John,
You must be the guy with the gal that my two buddies and I past that was having problems with his binding? if so I hope that got resolved. We decided that since the wind was primarily from the east we would head to the west of west granite. none of us had ever been to the area so we were extremely excited when we came across this beautiful glades with open slopes and about 800-900' lines. We did the stability test at the top and s...

We've had extensive email discussion about the particulars -- the general consensus seems to be that the lower slide was likely effected by the ice layer. Pictures from the slide made it look like it was probably the bed surface, or at least very close to the top, perhaps facilitating depth hoar formation, or just lubricating the snow above. They said they couldn't ski about a 1/4 of the couloir due to ice/inadequate snow cover.
Another theory of mine (I've...

Looks like the north side of Chief Joseph. Did you approach from Hurricane Creek? I was there three weeks ago also (down from Walla Walla) and it was a glorious weekend to be sure!
Wow thats a pretty weak critique right there. People can take their pets wherever they want unless there's a restriction, and there isn't in winter conditions on BC terrain.
Besides, what about those st. bernards with jugs of hot cider around their necks that save people lost in the snow!? Do they criticise skiers for trying to be "cool" or getting stuck in tree wells....no.. no they don't! They risk life and paw with courageous altruism, not for themselves,...

It was a great day out skiing with RafMax and our group. Before descending into the Swift Creek Valley, two of us skied a bit further southeast and happily found a few pitches of light untracked powder.
We also encountered some crusty conditions on both east and south facing slopes in that area as well.
A pit we dug on a lower angle slope fractured at CT 11 and failed completely at CT30. Crystals were both faceted and subangular.

Scary indeed. Marcus, thanks for sharing this excellent account. I'm very glad to hear everyone was OK.
I have a few observations and one question. First the question: the Crooked exit where the slide occurred looked horrible a few weeks ago with a big ice bulge. I assume it's covered now since the report didn't mention anything about it, but probably only shallowly. Did this thin coverage/underlying ice have anything to do with the slide

irwinator:
with all do respect, that really is a rediculous argument/question/statement. Some people have irrational passions. telemark skiing is an irrational passion. The gear is getting heavier and AT gear is lighter and until recently more efficient while touring. In addition it is is more difficult to ski in certain situations, so why are telemark skiers allowed out there other than to slow down AT skiers, get hurt and crash. I am not making this arg...

It is one thing to share conditions/reports after the fact as we do here, quite another to do so on the way up to a hopefull stash of pow - just telling which aspect was pretty open!
There is plenty for everyone. Case in point: Lots of TAYers complain of crowds at Paradise. And it's true...there are a lot of people up there these days. But keeping the STASH a...
Welcome to TAY.
Thanks for the great TR !

yeah...well...even though you were being more honest than I thought...it still got my jealousy up...and hence I explored some new stuff to me. it was great!
Marcus - thank your friend for sharing this.
JoeCat's report of kicking off a slide at Heather Ridge on Thursday (yet another recent report is in part what led my party (one of whom was fully buried about 20 years ago and who now demostrates what I'd call healthy caution - something I'm willing to listen to but don't always exhibit to the same degree when left to my own) to head to the relatively moderate treed slopes of Yodelin on Saturday. Nope - we honestly didn't know where we were headed, only that N/NW aspects were where we wanted to go. We followed our noses to good snow; sounds like you did too!
That puppy had two sets of tracks in it from Thursday on early Friday morning. But the four tracks coming down the super sketch off angle sort-of-a-couloir-sort-of-a-mixed-climb-route just to the north of that were really impressive.

It is riddled with rocks, wires, sharks and an errant hippopotamus. Highly recommend to avoid this nasty bit of terrain!!
Wow. Sounded dangerous up until the hippopotamus. That I've got to see. ;). (Truth be told, there are plenty of other stashes to keep me busy.)

The Zipper is tracked out.
Smile when you say that, partner! ;)
Indeed it does, John. Spooky stuff. From the pit results in my avy class Saturday and Sunday, it's a very complex snowpack right now. Ought to make for an interesting couple of months.
Whoa Marcus, thanks for sharing the narrative.
I honestly am a bit shook up at the moment because after a quiet winter thus far, 4 stories of near miss incidents have surfaced in one week.
One is the burial and rescue of the fiancé of the daughter of a friend that happened in the Vahallas. The other three are Central Cascades localities: this story, the one Zap has provided the weblink for in Random Tracks, and the one on the NWAC report of a snowmobile at Gallagher Head Lake are...

Don - what route did you take to get over the ridge to Grand Junction? Too bad you last photo wasn't take from a little bit further to the west, then we could see how Zipper Chute is filling in - did you notice how it looked?
