Yeah the guy with the "groomer" has had some fun, but he/she did get the play area groomed for the weekend.
Good corn with some icy patches (especially on wind affected ridges).
Nice to see someone got some good snow.  Way to go.
Thanks for the report and great photos!

Saw the ranger stopped at your Glacier Bridge vehicle after he barked at us for being seven minutes late leaving Paradise.  I'm curious if you retrieved the Paradise vehicle that evening?
Yeah, we saw Tara and Carl's car parked at the bridge and figured a big ski was up!
Way to pick it man! That's one great looking sunset cruise. I'm pretty open for the next couple of weeks if you have anything going on. I still don't think I have any snow at my cabin on 97!
Beautiful day. Looks like the Northwest wind machine has been doing the grooming! Was the trail in to Pan Point?
Any update on the snow?  good corn? what time of day?
Yea the parks avalanche page has some stuff but they stop being publicly accessible at 5pm at night till the following morning!?!? You used to be able to use ARFI (http://webapps2.ucalgary.ca/~asarc/arfi/) to get the info from the data loggers during all times of day with the added bonus of snow depths and 24hr snow accumulations. Sadly the links for GNP have been broken since Decemeber. Perhaps I will try and bribe someone for the updated working link that is available 24hrs. Parks Canada also...
That looks darn good from the perspective of central WA! Wondering what data loggers you use?  The Canadian Avalanche Center, or do you have other options. thanks.
I did a dawn patrol on Hyak on Thursday between 6:30 am and 8 am.  Opted for the cross country trail to climber's right of the Oly can, which had been plowed, but even there it was shallow and refrozen with open streams.  Saw a lone coyote, heard a larger pack close by the trail.
I can personally attest conditions did not improve after the sunset.  A very pleasant evening to be out nonetheless though.
Nice man, keep skiing. I broke my fibula skiing down to Pineapple Pass in 2007, then skied out down Great Scott, Big trees and the traverse out. LOL.
Someone had to do it. Thanks for reporting back on the outing.
yeah dude, that was sick! thanks for documenting the day - all that time lapsing paid off  :)

Perhaps we should take the advise of Ptor Spricenieks and "put sweet smelling smoke into the atmosphere on which the snowflakes can form."

bobby and I have been trying that for years now with mixed, if not outright inconclusive results ;D

I guess I'll go back to burning skis in hopes of more.  Help us Ullr!

LMAO...my extra fire and excess sacrifices of skiing in the rain as much as possible seems to not be having the desired effect/affect(?).

Nice video.  It sure was fun to get a few days of winter. I guess I'll go back to burning skis in hopes of more.  Help us Ullr!
Inverse conditions today.

Rain reached to 5,000' well into monday night... i know since i camped at 4,999.  ::) Nasty crust on mush today. 1 to 4 inches of solid, sometimes unbreakable. 4,000 down was ick, but could be ok in the sun, maybe?

Decent riding above 5k, especially east and south aspects. Moderate terrain that didnt require hard edging was fun. Dog loved it!

Felt more like spring.
What are current Stevens Pass conditions like?  Friday had good coverage with soft snow, but reading about the rain on Sunday I am wondering if it is still good.

Thanks for any info!
Matt
you didn't happen to gps your tracks on the way down did you?  :)

also i'm assuming you went up the road marked 4081 as i see it on google maps?  and then on up the bedal creek basin?

side question:  do you know if nf 23 white chuck road was ever repaired? (or nf 49?)

On the 13th I went for a look in Clara Lake Basin, to see what the snow was like, and check avalanche conditions after the big blow.  The snow was completely wind hammered mostly breakable crust with the occasional stretch of wind board.  In protected areas, I found shooting cracks and settling,  but nothing moved (I was on shallow angle terrain).  The skiing was generally challenging.  Mike and a friend met me and we made a lap together, and I'm starting to think h...
Well written T.R.!!

Every run was a blast! It's going to be hard to beat this weekend this winter.
It's moments like this when I wish we had one of those bands-playing emoticons on the edit form for this site!

...time-travel...

Doh!
That is a miracle break. The recovery included time-travel back to 2013!  Enjoy.   ;)

A good deal of road traffic even before 7:30am  with the lots nearly full already as we passed by. Deep and deeper between 5500-3800ft, we never found the crust or anyone else all day.

chilled with your bro yesterday for awhile bef

wet at the exit.

wet exits should be confined to kayaking ;D

Glad to hear you got some good turns in despite the afternoon warmup
Echo what others have noted. Found good fluffy snow approx. 3500 - 5000 just east of the crest. Still suffering from coverage in the trees but skiable lines. A bit spooky in the open with fast moving propagating surface slides within the storm layers.  Heavy and wet by the time we left around 2:00 p.m.

And then the rain sucked the life out of the fun. Raining hard at 3,500 east of the crest, and at the pass around dusk to early dark.

Had a simularly good day, but it was pretty wet at the exit.

Waste deep pow to waste deep creek fording.

Great write up Ben.  Fun weekend for sure. Thanks to you and morgan for the location selection and invite. Really fun crew, with an awesome extended group. Thanks for the food and whiskey!

Sick edit and solid riding, Rowan!

Im still trying,, both with the editing and riding. I did get quite a bit of good footage from all of us.

Thanks for writing this up ben, and for the rad photos!
here is my footage from the weekend:  https://vimeo.com/83737614

11 hardy instructors from the Washington Alpine Club's backcountry course enjoyed an instructor-development day led by Scott Schell.

Loose snow ran with some  effort on a storm layer about 30 cm down on test slopes on the lee (S) side atop the Yodelin trees. A second storm layer displayed itself at  CT 9-10, ~70 cm down; a sharp line in columns after testing, but indeterminate fracture character.  Friday's rain crust is a prominent feature in the snowpack.
Nicely done, Mike. I wish you a speedy (full) recovery.

Was that you breaking trail uphill through the trees above the RV lot?

Not us. We did not ski in lift accessible terrain. :)
Congrats Mike on good wound healing!  I would be in a foul mood for sure if I couldn't do some uphill play.
Was that you breaking trail uphill through the trees above the RV lot? I don't think I've ever seen anyone touring in that area as its usually demolished by the lift-served hoards before noon.
dang that looks like an awesome trip
Thanks Jeff for the fun weekend!
