Nice! Hawkins is our go-to spot when there's "just way too much pow" in January and February. There's almost 4k' of relief from the road on the Camp Creek side, and no snomos because of access difficulties! If you invest in a cheap old snomo, this is could be your huckleberry in winter.

Did you ascend the ridge between Camp creek and Big Boulder creek?
-Yes, that's the ridge. Easy hike for the first ~1000', then snow.
A few of my pixs; more here
good thing it wasn't very hot:
Good one, Radka.

The only time I've been up there was in the summer, when I drove my Toyota up the south fork Fortune creek, past Gallagher Head lake and into the south basin of Hawkins. I remember thinking that it would make for great ski terrain. I believe it's one of the few spots in this state where one can drive above 6000ft. Some solid 4-wheelin, for sure!

Since most of the route-finding shenanigans happened in the dark, this video primarily highlights the fun we had in the sun. The skiing was better than I had hoped, given the recent warm weather and slushy skinning in the dark.

Good grief! Look at that gouge-out on the HR Road.
How did you go out the Obstruction Point Road- Walk, bike/ski, what combo?
All of the above :)

This does seem earlier than I can remember. Too bad the NPS doesn't seem to have the same enthusiasm for plowing roads early during the winter ;o)

Hey Dan,
Your picture brings back so many memories of our sons, Brian and Danny on that same slope at about the same age................ great times, savor them.
As with Lowell's son, our boys interests did diverge from Jan's and mine as they grew older, fortunately their love of skiing stayed strong.
We miss skiing with you, let's get together sometime this spring.
Glad to here that you have come to the same realization as many...

Could always approach from Anette Lake instead.
Awesome Dan!
Your photo brings back memories of when my son was about that age.
Cherish these moments! Since my son entered high school his own interests have tended to take precedence over the father-son trips. In a few weeks we're heading to Europe with his high school jazz band.
It's all good.

If you gotta go on a death march at least you found great snow!
Yup that was us.. glad you found some good snow up there. was a nice surprise for us to be able to drive so far up the road
Thanks for the update. Did you cross-post over at snowest? ;)
How about, "what's the punchline, Richard?" ::)

How much do I have to pay for you to write TR's for me?
Last July, through happenstance on the Russell Glacier, he charged me and my two ski partners zero for fresh hot coffee. :)
Can see pics. Looks great!
Strong effort, man! Thanks for the report.
From the first switchback until you turn the corner and head west toward Windy Pass is all gravel. Before that is a half mile or so of rapidly dwindling mix, and you'll have skinning for about a half mile to Windy Pass for a while yet.

I was surprised to read an earlier report about skiing chutes on the SW of Earl. I did not even see how they connect at this point. You da man!
Odd. I can't find your email inviting me.
This is exactly why I go to the mountains, to escape the jackassery I experience when cycling, running, etc in the city, especially around college. I have only had one incident when I was cycling up to Artist Point in pouring rain and high winds when a couple of college aged kids made a snide comment towards me as I was ascending the 10 mile climb. As for skiing, I've yet to experience such negative comments, but I'm sure the day will come, unfortunately soon enough. ...
I think Freud would diagnose the jackass as a frustrated individual with deeply repressed feelings about his sexual orientation.
Nice TR. I arrived just as you were leaving. I toured up Quicksilver and the snow was enjoyable to the last lift tower.
Jackassery sums it up, your no response was the best retort, that kind of stuff can sure put the damper on a great day. As a reminder I'm sure for every cull you bump into like that, there is at least 10, that make it all the better.
My guess is it wasn't the guide with the stupid comment...
Excellent adventure. I bet the conditions will be pretty different this weekend.
5.5-ish sounds about right - there's a lot of room to slide left or right to move past other parties, which we did to get around the WAC groups. Fun climbing - my first time up there, for all that I've been climbing in WA since I came out here.
I think the "tooth" was my first rock climb in Washington. I was new to Washington climbing and thought most of the Crux's involved shoulder stands. I remember a poor tree was weighed down with years of old slings. Strange people called Mountaineers never trusted a sling they hadn't slung. Thanks for the memory! Is the route about 5.5 in one spot?
Some people just get big heads leading folks up slogs countless times..then again that could make sense with all the admiring "followers".
Nicely done = that's a real haul! That's pretty dumb about the comment but that sounds atypical - most people are friendly up there.
There was good corn up there today with the cooler temps - we didn't summit but had a great last run from the crater at around 3pm and it was holding up well down upper zigzag glacier.

We, 3 guys and a black dog in a white van, met you at the trailhead as you came back? We had a nice tour up Fortune Peak(Pt 7382 above the N Fork Teanaway). Skied its big SE bowl back timberline ~4pm. Set off some slow-moving hissers but largely stable, serviceable snow back to the trees where things firmed up considerably. A good day for old farts.
Just picked the book up finally! Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for the report. I am looking to go here tomorrow. You know where I can find some details on the route for the Birthday Tour?
This is a fantastic guide: Volken et al Your local shop should have a copy. Enjoy!
I tried a few times to upload photos and had no luck. I'm also terrible with technology.... Anyway just imagine in your head a sick line, and that was it!
"Kevino", PM me your contact info, and I'd love to get out and ski once the weather lets up a bit.

Sorry I didn't check out road 9070. But I see from another post you might be headed that way. Please report back with your findings if you go.
...and just how many full-monty photos did jtack have to sift through to come up with the four TAY-rated pics above? That's a true friend.
Happy birthday Mike, way to hang loose.

Sounds like a tiring couple of days, Drew. Good motivation for my PT schedule.
May the harvest continue a couple more weeks.

Great report Ben! Finally got the chance to read it all. Was super excited that you were able to join. Enjoyed your company and shredding with you. Those few days in Iceland were the best part of the adventure.
..that's a damned nice thing to say. I reckon we could go a-touring together & that would get the job done. a pm coming your way.
Were you using your fat skis to compensate?
Kidding. Happy birthday Mike!

I just moved to Whitefish yesterday so if you're in need of a ski partner...I was out here earlier this winter and got a good taste of skiing in the park and want some more!

Update on Black conditions: 4 days later, it sounds like not much changed. We hoped it would have consolidated some since your report, but it was not to be. At least it was later into the thermal cycle and the natural avys had already flushed themselves out, so we only had ourselves to worry about. We were able to summit, but the skiing mostly involved ski cutting wet slides and/or sticky mush.
