Subaru Forester (2010) and Chains, WTF was created by The_Snow_Troll
I've had suby's for about 20 years and have never needed chains, but I've always carried them, 'just in case'. I went to buy some for my new ride and noticed that the manual says that they won't fit based on clearance between tire & wheel well.
WTF Subaru
Anyone have the new body style (2009-2010?) and used chains or researched it?
(Although, I guess based on my 20 year sample size the changes I'd need them are slim)

My XT outbacks have same warning. Cables work. But never need them.

Long-standing issue with subarus, volvos XC, etc. But the close fitting diamond chains (I got mine from Les Schwab) appropriately sized are supposed to work without damaging the car; if you are really cautious, get the Thule advanced chain system for about $450/pair. Also be aware that newer AWD with advanced computer controlled traction and stability probably require chains on all 4 wheels to avoid AWD damage if chains are to be used.
oh yeah, I have the new body style outback (2011).

I guess it's best to buy a pair that will fit, but it is more of a token for WSP rather than a tool for me too.

So, speaking of 'token'. Do they actually require chains? It was my understanding that AWD / 4WD counted as a 'trackion device' and therefore one would not have to chain up.
Anyone know for sure?

I do.
At least in my neck of the woods. Just after you pass the golf course on 410 going to Crystal there is a sign that makes chains a requirement from Nov 1st to April 1st. And the fine for not having them is I think in the $150 range.
I think that law applies to all mountain passes in Washington State.
***Edit I forgot to say that all cars have to have chains 4 wheel drive or not.
