As I get it, there are a couple of stages for winter traction advisors.
1. No restrictions
2. Chains OR 4WD OR AWD OR Studded tires recommended.
3. Chains -OR- 4WD -OR- AWD -OR- Studded tires required.
4. Chains -AND- 4WD -OR- AWD required.
5. Road closed.

I drive a 2000 Subaru Forester, and while I do own a set of chains, they still haven't come out of the boxes. Seriously, if you need 4WD/AWD and chains, do you really want to be driving at all?

And that answer would be yes if the lifts are going to be running, are loading or even may load.

Only if you don't want to spend the night at one of the Mt Tahoma Ski Trails snowparks, Paradise Parking lot, ... any other destination where you are likely to get caught in a major storm or weather conditions that lead to sheer ice.

reminds me of the time I was skiing bc at Paradise and a storm came in and the NPS evacuated Paradise; when I came to the parking lot some time later all that was left was my Pick-up, snow drifts, and a note from Ranger LEO Karen (who knew me) that gave me the combination to the gate lock at Longmire; Karen, the sweetheart, couldn't abandon me and was was waiting worriedly at Cougar Rock campground. Now, I had chains but didn't need them with 20-inch wheels, M+S tires, and 4wd low (and good ice scrapers and brushes to get the ice and snow off the windows and a lighter to heat the key to get the frozen door locks open) ;-)

Good response BROTHER. My subaru w/ cables is like a tank that can mow anything down, under 8 inches....
One day in the ditch will teach people to get their hands dirty and like it.

Here's the thing, if you have a subie with AWD and good tires (M+S or studs) there's not a WSP out there that can keep up with you in the snow/ice.

But I can tell you from experience they get a little upset when you pass them ;)
