Thank you all for the advice and comments. It has given me some good food for thought and additional places to investigate ski buying. I’m still unsure about what I’ll end up with, but I may try to figure that out this weekend as it seems there are some sales going on, including at 2nd Ascent and the evo sale previously mentioned. I’m trying to get in skis for under $300 so that eliminates some of the higher end skis straight off. I will add the Mt. Bakers SL to my list of consideration, they do sound good.
Though I might be looking on the cheaper end for skis, I am planning to go with dynafit bindings. And yes, I’ve already been working on my avalanche knowledge, no worries. That just leaves skins, but I expect once I have skis, that will be loads easier. Keep the advice coming if you still have some. Thanks again.

Well whatever you do have fun!
My only further advise on what you have said is this.
Although I totaly respect and understand why people may have limited budgets, fixed incomes etc when it comes to buying something frankly as frivoulous as ski gear, please keep in the back of your mind that is an investment you are making that you will have to live with for quite a while assuming you are not ski quiver freaks like Joedabaker and I.
Assuming you are going to have use these skis for say the next five years( could be longer, could be shorter ) the cost difference between what you really want and settling for something within a predetermined budget... when amortized over those 5 years is something you should think about.
$300 for something thats OK
$600 for something that really suits what I want= $300/ 5 years= $60 a year=6 month ski season ( could be 12 if you go TAY)= $10 a month= 3 grande starbucks lattes.
Now that's overly simplistic and I'm sure the economists amongst us will fault my simple arithmetic with present versus future value of the dollar and depreciation.
If your budget is firm or all you can afford, it is what it is and get the best bang for your buck. If only predetermined ...consider the length of time you will have them and get what you want.
I really think the Bakers( although a great ski) are too narrow and old technology but opinions are like assholes ... we all have one.

BUY THOSE BAKER SL'S!
That was a good deal before the additional 25%.
Baker sl's w/dynafits, and G3 Alpinist skins (G3 Alpinist skins @ Sierra Trading Post for $89) would be a great all-around set up to get you into the mountains.
If you're still of an impressionable age, eventually you'll decide it's worth hauling a pair of waterskis and skins the size of hall runners into the backcountry, but you'll have plenty of time to save some money before you get to that point.
There was a recent post about Dynafits-on-the-cheap.
The sexually frustrated, sled cursing, smelly-retro-hippy Jedi-Mansons amongst us may not be the "Dukes of down", but we are the "Champs of cheap".

^^^^^^Thats very good and darn near perfect.
However, full disclosure means Kneel Turner will have to admit to having gone super- fat and early rise when he bought his Voile Drifters!

I'm still of an "impressionable age"... :
-Zip it Chica!
And "summer clamping" a pair of obsolete cambered skis is a perfectly legitimate way for a cheapskate ski bum like me to get rockered.
