Thanks for clarifying.
I skied the Adams Glacier a week after that photo was taken, and I wasn't thinking of trying it again this year, but I was considering another look at the NFNWR. Hopefully with more beta, I will be able to find a descent with the LARGEST suncups possible, just to maximize my late summer skiing experience.

I was also on Adams on July 6 for a solo trip up to the summit and down the SW chutes. I completely agree that the south climb is not really worth skiing at this time. The SW chutes were still in very good condition as of 7/6. After a 4 am start from Cold Springs, I reached the summit at 1000. I started down from the summit at 1030 and down the chutes at about 1100. The only other creatures over there besides me were a couple of mountain goats that I almost sk...

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my trip report: I didn't ski the NFNWR (except a tiny portion at the bottom) and instead skied the Adams Glacier. The picture (the same photo Charles has posted on the main page, I hope it's OK to use it like this) shows my approximate ski descent in red. The lower portion where I traversed out onto NFNWR is shown circled in blue. The suncups here were huge, larger t...
Suncups on NFNWR? Is this right? Just on the top? I'm sorry to be questioning you, I am just surprised to hear of these suncups on a steep, north-facing slope. I could imagine them on the lower-angle stuff near the top of the mountain, with more direct sun, but on the meaningful part of NFNWR??
Feel free to call me a disgraceful idiot for questioning you, but I just had to ask.

Nice trip report. I had been wondering about timing on the N side, since I intend to go back myself for sure. When we skied it on the 29th, the snow was much better than you describe, mostly smooth with little to no sun-cuppage. But the pictures that Charles posted from early June seem to show the route in even better condition. Out of curiosity, when is that TH accecible on average?
The rock band just to L of the blue line would be VERY steep if you tried to go straight down it. It was anywhere from about 20 to 100 foot of true cliffs, but with ledges just above the drop that provided the somewhat nervy escape. Have a look at th shadow cast off the left side of some of those points and you can get a sense of how big any given drop is. One part of it is even a waterfall... Oh and should mention that there's no bridge over the inter fork, so once you strap out there's an exci...
The red line, wolfs, was why I went up to Burroughs - to pick a line if there was one on Mt Ruth's North Face. Indeed, that is my line, the line I would ski if I had the choice!
Your picture is up and running, very good ski. Your route was my second choice but was an iffy prospect if it cliffed out. I wasn't sure how steep that rock band was you scrambled. Good show.

Errp. Was pointing to my scratch folder where you have to be ME (logged in as) to see it.
Hopefully it's there now.
There were as I said two prominent tracks on Mt Ruth on the 4th. One corresponded closely to the mysterious "red line" on MW88888888's original photo, although he disavows having made it and won't fess up to what that red line means ;) That one did have some ballsy turns on it right in the gut of the chute, I'll bet you were looking at that.

I don't see the photo you posted for some reason but did happen to ramble up onto Second Burroughs Wed night at sunset to scope things out and take some B&W photos. Based upon my recollection of your TR from a few days back I quickly spotted what I'm sure was your line. Not sure if it will show in the photos once I get them developed, but I was able to trace your descent with binoculars all the way down. Very inspiring line that got the adrenaline pumping just...

Wolfs - you're killing me! Hope you can figure the picture out, love to see your line. And no, I went up to Burroughs to see what was still skiable on Ruth and the Interglacier. It's still on the hit parade. Your descent description is exactly the Hot Tip I've been looking for - thanks!
Paul, your eye sight wasn't tricking ya, there were a couple of boarders in Ron's group, Ivo from Florida and Peter, from, I think Bellevue, but then what would I know cause I wasn't there either. ;D ;D ;D Just remember, mom's always watching!!
Hey Ya know what they say, with age the first thing to go is your memory, ah sight, er..... what was I saying? ;D
I don't wear hair shirts or flagellate, and those huge sun cups really *were* fun (on skinny Karhu Extremes, yet)! They were almost as big as the dents an inverted VW beetle might leave, so it was sort of a terrain park sort of experience. Sounds like as of last weekend, the south climb was more in the "heinous" state, but of course one man's pain is another's pleasure...

Maybe old news, but while checking out MW88888888's photos of his great Shasta trip, saw this photo also in his album of Mt. Ruth taken from somewhere around Bouroughs. This is a great photo for showing what lines are still possible for getting off of Ruth. Basically it all boils down to finding the one chute that still goes. The red line was one already on this picture when I stole it from MW88888888's pictures folder ;D (better to ask forgiveness than permission, right, plus everyone steals o...
Mark Once again an excellent report! A seemingly innocent tour is turned into the first chapter of of a 'Ken Keeseyesq" road trip novel! The reference to Bert Lahr rings a bell for this Roman Catholic boy from jersey, and is more then appropriate the free heelers in the group [sorry Ron, Mad Dog];

The only irregularities I see in the text of Mark's original post are two squares instead of the expected spaces.
The first is after the word "hitchhiker" in the second paragraph and the second is after the word "stop" (as in "rest stop") in the middle of the forth paragraph.
WinXp & IE6.

Mark, there are none of those characters in your latest reply - thanks for testing. If anyone else sees those characters in Mark's original post, I'd be interested to know what OS and browser you are using.
Michael - I'm pleased and amused that you happened to see your picture in conjunction with Mark's TR. The world's getting smaller by the hour. eh?
I sent you a higher resolution copy of the picture via email.
Hope to run into you again sometime in the mtns. Next time, if I recognize you in time, I'll at least wave as you flash by :-)

Thanks, Ron. You got some great action photos considering you were clinging by your fingernails to that icy precipice we were skiing at the time. Thanks also to Charles for repairing faulty links and suffering through the bizarre formatting. I don't know what the problem might be, especially as my own Mac (OS 9.2) and IE (5.1) do not show the superfluous symbols. Maybe we can run some tests? This reply, for example, is composed in MS Word with only one space between sentences. Better?

For what little it's worth, the first time I did Adams, several years ago, it was late July and the suncups had actually gotten so large that believe it or not, they were kind of fun - like a field of reverse moguls. YMMV.
Is it really that bad? I've been planning to do the southside this weekend for the past two months, your report is a significant disappointment. Would you recommend I cancel my plans? Can you quantify how bad the suncups are?
Thanks,

Hey Ron, Mark,
Corinne and I are actually the "phantom" skiers you saw skiing down on Sunday. Sorry, we did not stop on our way down...the ski was just too good and I wish there had been a lift to give us a second descent :). We are french but are still usually not as rude and a bit more social then that :-).
Ron: thanks for the photo! I saw it on your site. It's pretty funny, I had read the various reports on TAY on Saturday and only once we were back at the parking lot...

Yes indeed, another great story - thanks Mark! Great photos, too, Ron.
I have a question about the text display, in Mark's post and occasionally in other posts: the spaces between most sentences and paragraphs show a " " character, at least to me, viewing from a Mac with IE5. Do others see this too?
My experience has been that this character often shows up when the poster composes in a text program, then copy/pastes into the TR posting window. It seems to be due to having...

Mark, nice report, sorry I missed the ski, and meeting you and the new kids on the block. Heard through the grapevine that you passed the necessary test for "secrecy". 8) Ivo and Peter, hope to see you in the future, and Dana see ya next year, I'm gonna try really hard to not be tied up for this particular ski ;D ;D Did get lots of great bike riding in though, so all was not lost. The ski pictures do make me smile!! ;D
Nice report, Mark.
You lived up to your stellar reputation as one that creates a great read.
It seems only appropriate that you be granted the "one picture only" honors in giving others a preview of the visual part of our tour:

There's likely other shots floating around out...

Ron, I finally found markharf's TR, and that led me to your photos, where I found a photo that was taken from the same location as your 2001 shot. So, in the Nisqually Chutes route photos thread, I changed your 2003 shot - hope that is OK.
I have not been keeping up with all of the posts, and I had NO IDEA that all this funny business was occurring. But be sure, the Destructor shall visit his wrath upon this post!
Actually, I added the three photos to the Nisqually Chutes thread in the route photos section. Hopefully I got the photo locations correct. Nice job, MW88888888 and ron j, the comparison is useful and stri...

Unless this was a dream report instead of a trip report, I think the date was probably June 28, so I moved it to the June 2003 board.
Yeah, Toby. I would not recommend the S Climb unless something changes it (like a lot of heat or new snow). Suncups, runnels, glissade trenches, and postholes, .. the works.
On our ascent we spoke to a boarder, who was walking down, who had done both the S Climb and SW Chutes the previous two days. He said the sun-cupping had come on quickly and strong. I suspect the upper part of the SW Chutes will be OK for a while (it was my partner's first visit to Adams and he wanted to do the S Climb.)<...

I'll second the recommendation of Mt Buckner. I did the loop you describe a few years ago and thought it was grand. Here's an old trip report:

I used 130 cm firn skis on this trip. My friend Garth used more conventional gear.

Hey Corey - As for late season...Ben and I skied it the last day of summer (9/21?) last year, leaving the summit around 3:45, and it was epic then...I think it's probably good into October (as Sky skied the Roman Wall on a HOT day (mid Oct.) last year via the Squak)...
Its quite evident that the lower elevations truly did suffer from this past mild winter. I can already tell that Coleman-Deming will likely have many more difficult crevasse crossings come Sept/Oct as compared to last...

We had a climb almost identical to that on Adams a couple of years ago, HD. I turned around, too. Peak bagging seems to lose it's luster to me anymore, when you can't see it or ski it. 8)
Yes that was some silky silky snow out there. I was going to write a TR myself but got lazy. You pretty much summed it up Toby, so now I don't have to, but I am curious if that route has a reputation for good late season snow conditions. I have been lucky to have had lots of good corn this year, so it's hard to say what was the best, but that was definately the best July snow I have skied yet.

Nice Paul, sounds like you and Todd had a great time on the PL. Think we're gonna try to stash some of that nice corn in the next couple of weeks. I think that group you saw in the chutes was Ron and the gang since they were also up there on sunday too. 8) I was away doing a little mt bike riding. ;D
oh good! the other report of the south side suncups had me worried! thanks Amar.
ouch, that bad huh? so are the s.w. chutes cupped now too? at what elevation does it become unpleasureable do you think??? ???
Thanks for indulging us, Charles.
Finally made it up there yesterday. Here's a shot from about the same location:

Still obviously quite skiable and still a blast and a lot better than when we skied it in the earlier pic.

This route is not off Deadhorse Creek Road, if my take on which roads are what is correct. I've seen you posting on a separate thread for Skyline Divide - the route Russ and I skied is one road over (I think it's called Glacier Creek Road, but am not sure, but in any case we started at the Heliotrope Ridge trailhead, and so went straight where you would turn left to drive up to Skyline Divide). With that all said, we were about 3 hours (ish) from our car where this photo was taken. We were on gl...
topozone.com has USGS maps and a well designed search engine to look at online maps. The ranger station in Glacier sells maps.
I dunno about fishing, ask in Glacier.
Plan on carrying your skis for a bit to reach snow.
I've never been to Skyline divide, so can't give any info about accessing it. The roads and trails for the two approaches are different. The $5/day parking pass is per car, but as far as I know, the Cougar Divide entrance isn't a trailhead (do...

Sounds like a blast! How far of a hike is it to where Jim is skiing from where you park your cars at the trailhead on Deadhorse Creek rd? I'm going this Tuesday and it's my first time on Baker.
Go earlier in the season and crevasses on the Lynch should be a non-issue. I was up there around Memorial Day and it looked like a magic carpet down to Pea Soup Lake. After a bivy on the middle summit we considered skiing over to Hinman but after the slog up and subsequent partying we just didn't have the jam for it.
Here's a shot of Jim on the approach: (the Roman Wall was definitely a superb ski)

Jim- nice work! Perfect timing for me to get some beta, as I am planning on heading up this weekend. Another reason why T-A-Y is the best website in the world.
Just wanted to add that this was my first time up Baker, and I was truly blown away by the aesthetics of this route, from cool forest and waterfalls to meadows to grand views of large and broken glaciers to cruising along the cliffs and seracs to the moderately steep climb up the cone. Wow.
