Thanks so much. You helped me a lot.
I will probably go for MLT 4 with Goretex liner, even tough some people are against that. Many preffer Termoformable liner but I think for my kind of skiing really doesn't matter.
Cheers.

You guys shoulda stuck it out,  cause it cleared out beautifully for us + you guys misses some of the best turns which were found above the saddle.
I think that skiing on the E. of the rocks (where Sky and I climbed up) was maybe a better choice...more snow & less cracks. IMHO
Ross
Well, where Paul and I skied far right and passed you guys on the way up, is usually a nice smooth slope around this of year (photo from Nov 12 2000):

But now it's got lots of cracks and bare ice, that's why I called it grim.  :)   Descending it in 20ft visibility didn't help, and there was only a few inches new on top of crust or ice.

On the Coleman proper, above 6800ft, I agree the sunshine and deep snow was pr...
Phil....I'm not sure where you guys went to see anything like a "grim sight"?
Where we were on the glacier, sure there were crevasses, but easily negotiated, and we were able to make a very direct descent down the glacier in primo conditions.
When we skied back down the C/D the visibility was good all the way down to below the glacier so that was not an issue.
There was a few inches of snow on the moraines around the camp.  Once on the glacier though the accumulated new snow really increased.

One more question and I am out of here:
I heard Dynafit TLT 4's you should buy half a size bigger than your regular boot size because of different shell design.
Are sizes of your Inverno's and TLT's and MLT's the same?
Did you go for 1/2 size bigger?

I don't know a lot about boot sizing, so I just pulled the liners out of my boots and looked at the numbers molded into the shell. Here's what they say:

Inverno: 10
TLT/MLT: 2...
Thanks, Phil.  The glacier below Heliotrope has really fallen apart the last couple of years.  Sounds like it's not yet filled in enough for the blundering likes of me.

"Hogsback Camp" is the USFS name for the summertime tent city at 6000 feet.
Thanks alot.
In Vancouver BC canada I have no option to see TLT 4's in stores. Only I can order them over the NET. I have Grivel G14 step-in crampons.

Glad the headwall turned out well for you guys...

I dunno where hogsback camp is, but there were only drifts of snow at 6000ft where the moraine ends and the glacier starts.  By 7000ft the snow was deep and great on the C-D, but not in the area people normally ski below Heliotrope - that was wind-scoured and crusty, with lots of small crevasses (and a few big ones) where I've never seen them before.  It was a grim sight.
I am thinking to buy one of those! ???
Lowell_skoog, could you please tell me what was alternative for you when you were looking for to find extension of your Inverno's? Why you picked MLT's?
I asume it's step forward from Inverno's.
MLT's are designed for middle ground between skiing and climbing. If you like to climb in them you have to give up some downhill performance. Do you think that make sense?
Do you think that TLT4 is better choice that MLT f...
Hey Ross, that's impressive--skiing the headwall this time of year (not to mention the C-D in questionable visibility).  How were the crevasses below Heliotrope Ridge?  How much new snow at the Hogsback camp?

thanks,

Mark
Yeah, I'm really sorry I couldn't join you! Thanks for the timely report though - it is nice to know what is going on up there, and it sounds encouraging for being able to ski to the car soon (without being an outlaw, that is).
Are you happy with TLT 4's?
My friend told me that boot is not step-in crampon compatible. When I look in the model (picture) I can't see why it's not.
I am looking for boot that I can climb some moderate snow and ice routes in SW BC and ski back.
Another boot I am reviewing is Garmont Dynamite. What do you think?
Thanks for your help.
Z
Though they share much of the same shell, the difference between the TLT4 and the MLT is night and day.  I've got both - the (unmodified) MLT skis like a running shoe, while the TLT4 is relatively stiff with good downhill performance...
Thanks for the report snoslut, it sounded sort of miserable though . . .

Somehow I hadn't read this report until just now. Great trip and photo! I've wanted to get up there with new snow, but have never managed to do it, and it sounds like you hit it just right. Too bad MRNP closes the gate so early (and opens it so late - the gate really ends up being open for only about 3 months a year!).
I agree...Sunday was all about great company and definitely not-so-great skiing!  Congrats on Greg's seven years straight.  There will be many more days to come.  Now I'm looking forward to some winter touring!!!

~Lara P.
Well, what can I say, but thank goodness we had already done our October ski, in great weather and new snow just a week ago.  But......we still went out this past Sunday, not like everyone else.  Since the weather forecast was for terrible weather, we did another recon hike and found even more "secret" stuff  ;D  One thing we can share is the beautiful scenery along 410 over Chinook Pass and the caving we did at Boulder Cave just off the main highway and an easy hike in.  It's really q...
I went up with some friends on Saturday and we decided to bail.  Report at 5:30am said snow level at 7,000ft.  4 hours later park ranger said they received sudden warmer temps pushing the freezing level to 12,000ft.  We tried to convince each other that the rain would die down and visibility would let up but it did not.  After 30 minutes or so the rain only picked up with the wind.  Bummer.  Hey Greg at least you had a line or 2.  My best or should I say only line was the one I stood i...
Nice report, Greg.
Too bad the snow wasn't a little better but it sounds like you made the best of the company and the conditions.  In my book, that's what it's really all about  ;)
Maybe soon, we'll have some REAL snow, eh.
Nice photo Kenji.  Looks like you had a good trip before the road closed.  I've always wanted to ski the Russell Glacier too!
Jerry:  very, very nice video!  i really enjoyed watching it.

Corey: I think so - he's got a small studio in the top Alpental condo unit . . . used to be a Boeing engineer?

Phil: Damn, you're right, that's powder!

E-mail from Frank this morning: "actually I couldn't afford to buy a lift ticket until I was 21 and a graduated engineer. I started skiing at age 6 in east germany on bent wooden boards with some kind of toe bracket and leather straps for a binding. Steel edges and cable bindings were yet to be invented. forward, but it's still the best skiing in the Continental US right now!

I dunno, Colorado has been looking pretty good lately:

Hey thanks you guys, I'm having fun playing with different stuff. Now we need some snow for some real action sequences ! ;D
Hey, that Frank looks a lot like the Frank who is my neighbor at Alpental --  Is that so?
I enjoyed your video very much -- well done!

4 lb. 9 oz. per pair!

I can see why you want to make them work...

Excellent editing, JW.  I especially like your use of an establishing shot so the audience can get an idea of where you are going, and your use of ambient sound. A decent sound track that adds information and sense of participation is sadly lackng from most ski "porn", including most of the professional ski vid.
... So...how much vertical is  currently available over there on the far side of the chocolate factory?

Shockingly far less than in years past.  Just a line along the west edge of the former glacier.  It used to be a sweet little stash with some respectable lines that you could count on into the fall.  Now it would barely qualify for a midsummer competition with the Pinnacle Gl. (say 300 vf?).  I'd guess a couple more long hot su...
A nice touch on the editing from Jerry, and a steady hand on the hallucinogenic koolaid from Ron.  Mad Dog, as always, models poise, presence and sophistication (this being family entertainment, I'm going to forgoe the obvious "willie" jokes).

So...how much vertical is  currently available over there on the far side of the chocolate factory?
Are those the lace up AT boots? ... You mentioned that you still packed them for the hike. They tried to convince me that they would hike well.  Obviously your experience is otherwise.

Yeah, the lace up ones.

With modification, they should hike better than AT boots. I'm rehabbing a knee problem, so I didn't want to hike too much in them this time.

I cut off the high-back and put my Scarpa Inverno liners in them. The high-back added...
Thanks Jerry for another fun video, even though the "Willie" was shorter than normal, it was a very fun day, with perfect weather and new snow.  It just doesn't get much better than that for October.   8)
Yo' Jerman, Nice Work on the viddy buddy... very cool.
Tim - Thanks for your camera suggestion... don't seem to have a "posterize" setting in the camera's firmware.  Maybe I'll try taking it to the camera store & try a new card (they wouldn't just try to sell me a whole new camera, would they?  ;) )
Man, I hate it when we miss the Kamster and the Casshole.  Guess we need to sleep in more.  :)
I've got a pair of the MLT's.  I've skied with them exactly once - in breakable crust.  It was sketchy!  They really offer no support. (I got them for snowboarding - for which they work well - and thought I may as well get something that fit my ski bindings too).
And yeah, they don't hike much better than a real ski boot with the buckles loosened.
Another fine outing. I've been messing around with video editing and offer this week's takes at:

Williwakis video (14 mb ) --- http://home.comcast.net/~jw-design/images/williwakas.wmv

Not much skiing I'm afraid  8)

Are those the lace up AT boots?  They tried to sell me on them last year since I was moving from leather.

You mentioned that you still packed them for the hike. They tried to convince me that they would hike well.  Obviously your experience is otherwise.

Alan
But how were the boots?

Wow David, you don't miss a thing.  ;)

Over the past couple winters, I've converted from Ramer and Silvretta bindings to Dynafit bindings. But I've missed the ability to use mountain boots with these bindings on certain tours. So I snapped up the last pair of Dynafit Mountain Lite boots that Marmot had. (They've been discontinued.)

They ski like crap--I mean--like a mountain boot. Being an inveterate t...
But how were the boots?
Indeed a gorgeous day, though the snow pretty much met expectations - the new was patchy and gluey, the old was rather scratchy.

Good views of St. Helens and a nice gentle venting of steam to be seen throughout the day.

Lowell: Thanks for reinforcing my assault on my complacent behavior which caused me to clear that melt crack of snow.  Perhaps my actions can serve as a warning to both myself and others.

Ron --
I kinda like the creative photo effects you are into.  If you get tired of it, dig around in your menu system until you find a setting named "posterize" and set it to off.

Either that or switch the white balance off the "acid" setting.  ;D
Heya Ron J & gang!  Too bad Kam & I missed you yesterday, but it was a great day indeed!...we may have been up at Paradise by 9:00 if the Kamster hadn't overslept his alarm, twice!  ;D

It was a great day yesterday, skiing, sun, and good friends, it just doens't get much better than that. We were also able to check out some "new" areas that will provide some fantastic  8) skiing this winter.  All we need now is snow  ;D
hey Ron J and Gang:

glad to hear you found great snow.  Cass and i were looking for ya -- we arrived at 9:30 am, a bit late as usual.  with no sign of you guys, we decided to ascend from Paradise lot.  our jaunt up the muir was nice, especially with great views of Helens .  also, there was enough new snow to cover the wind-scoured crusties beneath,
WooHoo, more photos!!   ;D

Hello Gang:

ahh, i'm jealous.  you all rode on lifts and the skiing looked like fun!  thanks for sharing the photos.

no, it was not any one from our group, but I got a few pics and Jerry got some video of them coming down the palmer.
Just out of curiosity, on Portland Mountain Rescue's Website they describe a rescue on Thursday of a backcountry skier with a fractured leg below Crater Rock. This wasn't anyone from here was it?

PS: Having such a fun Thursday and Friday (with you guys!) has made it very difficult to be productive at work today!
