Thanks Jason H.
I misquoted my dad. I called to ask him If it was okay to post "Lake Frances" on the internet and he asked, "what's that?". (He then told me some of it might be borrowed from Lord Byron's "Prisoner of Chillon".)

Yeah, '04 Shuksans with Dynafits? Half a year of skiing and sags already working on the quiver! I like your style, Stefan!
Jerry's shot #64 is a winner . . . is that Kelly Slater?
Na but sometimes I like to pretend that I am. ;D Thanx for the comparison though.
Wow thanks for the great photos and video. I too am sorry I missed it!
Sorry I missed it - next year I will line up child care if I have to. The video is great! I like the progression from cautious to all-out. Haven't had a chance to look through the photos yet, but with all of the good photographers I'm sure there are some great shots. Congratulations to all on what was obviously a perfect way to get in some fun August turns!
OK kids I have to say I'm sorry. I got new skis and forgot everything else, so the few pics I got are from the approach and one of Jerry on the way down the skree field. Good views but no action.

;D Thanks for the story. It made me laugh. I love those kind of days in the mountains. It is what brings me back.

For some reason webshots is being fussy tonight - if you get a screen that says something to the effect of "This album has been moved", just hit refresh on your browser once or twice - that should take care of it.
enjoy!

yup, who would've thought that 160 vertical feet of snow and a meltwater pond could be so much fun.
Had a great day up there, hopefully meet up with some of y'all for bigger trips this winter.

I was up til 4 AM at the going away party for a good friend of mine. (She's moving to Santa Fe). Needless to say, my day was just beginning as the turns were being made in the slush! Look forward to being able to attend next year.

If you are having trouble with the Neptune site, the video is now also availible here: Link
And to think that I spent the weekend indoors at a PC working on a presentation.Where are my priorities??
I'm with Skip - definitely the best Slush Cup I've been too! I'm looking forward to next year's festivities...snoslut promised he'd be sporting a bikini...
Thanks, Jerry, Ron, Mad_Dog and gang for another great time skiing!

Thanks Jerry, my fellow participants, and the fine, fine people at Olympia beer without whom the day would not have been possible. I can say without question this was the best Slush Cup I've ever been to, and I look forward to 2005.
I looked through my pics last night and there's some really good ones; I'll post them tonight.

Who were all of the snowboarders in the video? Guess I should have gone... >:(
Wow.
Randy's the man for getting his viddy processed and posted so quick. Nice job Randy.
I can't think of a better way to get fall turns in. What a hoot. Thanks all, for showing up and helping make it a time to remember. We even drew a spectator crowd of climbers at the top of Castle Peak; we could hear them cheering up there. Ran into one on the way down and he said they liked Jimjar's crash into the water the best... the one where he went totally submersed and lo...

Wow, what a day, 20 "slush cuppers" participating in the 2nd annual event! ;D As the day went on, the sun heating the slope and the competition, we moved from the "kiddie" pool to "BIG" water, with higher speeds, bigger splashes, wet boots, and many laughs, finishing up with our usual tailgate party at the end. ;D
Can't wait until next August. 8)

If I'd known there was a hug from Mad Dog at stake, I'd've been there. As it is, I guess I'll have to be satisfied with written reports and photographs.
Went to the Pinnacle area today (July 30) and found similar conditions to those reported (big surprise). West side of pinnacle had reasonable descents, but on bumpy suncups. Plenty of snow on that side, it appeared. The slope on the E. side (starting from near the top of the ridge down to the trail) was great for about 6 turns, then cupped-out. The hike is so sweet that any turns at all are a bonus. Saw the goat herd flock from the nob just SW of Pinnacle across the west snow slope I later skied...
Greg- Sitting in hot/humid Singapore in my brothers apartment reading TAY trip reports, trying to think cool. Glad you got it and see you again someday.
Jerry & Ron- Looks like you guys had a nice line over there by Unicorn Saddle ;) Have fun at the Slush Cup! I look forward to it next year 8) I may try to get some turns in while in Alaska, if I can find a place there that'll rent rando gear this time of year :)
Cheers!

Tony - I got the ski strap you mailed. Thanks! Greg
Good time to Muir! I'd pass out and fall over if I went that fast 8) . Sounds like fun in the chute. Have a good trip to Alaska! Too bad you can't make the Slush Cup, next year man!
Looks like you had a good late July snow slope up there in the Tatoosh (Looked like a nice line below Unicorn Saddle when I viewed it from the Muir snowfield on Saturday....funny when I saw that snowfield I was thinking "I wonder if Ron J. and others are on that snowfield today" ;D)
Cheers!

Thanks for getting your link fixed, Stefan. Very nice pictures, BTW. You also go some great pictures of Robie's sweetie (I mean the goat, in this case).
Nice report, Chris.
Looks like you pretty well squeezed the last dregs out of that line :)

an explosion of alliterative grace
Mark
Indeed!
Thanks for the reports. I'm trying to decide whether to head out that way this weekend or save it for the dog days of September.
Such an explosion of alliterative grace can only mean you're no longer working endless hours, yes? I call that good news.
Mark
to ski tour in July with corn and cantaloupe, wildlife and wildflowers in silence and solitude.

Got a count on the goats. They should rename the lake 36 goat lake! That is plus or minus a goat!
I will try to post a picture once I set up a free web site somehow. Will take me a day or so to get the time to set it up.
Mark, I did the trip so that I could scope the Sholes and the east slopes just past the Portals. I could see the slopes clearly, but ml's report should be trusted. Note, I could see some cracks opening on the Sholes from my views near...

In older hiking books, the melt-out lake on the sunny side of Coleman Pinnacle is refered to as 14 goat lake. So, two dozen sounds like they are doing well!....I skied on Sat. evening and it was O.K.... the night on Table Mtn. and the amazing Northern Lights were definitely the highlight. (although smokey!) Anyone have an update on the fire?
Toured to the Sholes with sb on the 21st. While one aspect was akin to skiing on frozen cantaloupes, the fall line from the Portals and the higher adjacent slopes produced grins. Also found delightful slopes northwest of Coleman Pinnacle.
Twenty or so goats were beating the heat on the snow near the junction of Lasiocarpa & Ptarmigan ridges. It was a day to remind one how special the Cascades are: to ski tour in July with corn and cantaloupe, wildlife and wildflowers in silence and s...

It is odd that access to the Cougar Divide area has been limited because of wild life sensitivities, yet in an area such as the Coleman, where there is tons of human activity, that these goats seem to be thriving. I accept that I may be wrong, maybe there used to be a hundred goats ten years ago, but it is hard to imaging the area support much more animals at that elevation and in those winter conditions.
Alan
I've wondered about this, too....
I have some photos of them at a distance. I'll make a count. I would say that there were at least two dozen. It is interesting that there happened to be an article in the Seattle Times (Sunday?) on how the goat population in the North Cascades has tumbled, yet stabilized after skyrocketing in the Olympics.
These goats seemed to like to stay on the snow while I was there. My guess was to stay away from bugs or stay cool. They were high on the snowfields just to the...

Mad Dog and Stefan with soul patches is one for the ages!
that's funny...I've been along Ptarmigan Ridge many times skiing, and I've always seen a fair number of goats...in fact when Scott, Ben, Charles and I were there in 9/01, we saw what amounted to probably 2-3 dozen in a herd along the trail where the snow is (closer to Coleman Pinnacle & further west).
Sounds like nice skiing, way to get after it Amar, John and Phil. Congrats on the summit. It's great to hear everything worked out.
we all apreciate robie bringing his goat along, just wish he would have turned of the radio when they had their alone time.
