Thanks for the report Kenji.  Glad you had a good trip.  I might have to get some turns in this weekend before it's gone!
Hope we get another day of precip like last Friday to provide some nice local Sept and Oct turns.

And lots of that we're getting, though why can't it come on a Friday?
Mark-  Nice to meet you on the trail that day.  Scott (my 14 year old running ahead of me) and I had a great time.  Have a good one. Tony
Yes gentleman...my 200th ski day in my life, no estimates here! I've been skiing 27 years, but only really went for it about 8 years ago (been "streaking" for 3+years now!). I wish I could say I've skied more, but it can only get better from here!

~Lara

So that was your 200th ski day ever?  Congratulations!  Have you counted all along, or is that just an estimate?  Hmmm... I'm gonna waste some time and estimate how many days I've skied.

25.  (All the other times you were alpine climbing in reverse.)  This Lara person is whoopin' yer ass bro.
Thanks to everyone for making my 200th ski day an absolute blast! I had a wonderful meeting, skiing, playing, and eating-we all have wonderful tastes! My surgery was a success (though different than expected)and I plan to be up and skiing by the end of September assuming all goes well. I look forward to heading out with the gang again!

Charles, my nephews were warned ahead of time that no lifts were available

I figured that was the case, but hey...I think that's called literary license. Good to see you again - maybe we can get together again for your annual October 31 ski!
O.K. I'll bite. They are Baker and Sherman. Unless you are refering to the relatively minor peaks to the right (west). Going from left to right, they are Bastile (7,842') and Hadley (7,515').

The following picture, taken the same weekend, is on the Sholes Glacier. Baker is nicely framed by the Portals.
It was a fine day for some turns indeed.   And here are some pictures as proof:

Ah! It was a good day indeed. Charles, my nephews were warned ahead of time that no lifts were available still the vertical offered by The Stash is greater then any "Ski Area" in N.J.[I believe?] And they may have appriciated a lift as they climbed back to the top of the stash vowing never to listen to me again. My sister, her daughter, and my younger brother were also along for the hike. They were impressed by the mountains' size and by the numbers of skiers they saw and also had a wh...
Hey Mark - As for September, there's always the Artist Point side...there were a few prominent large snowfields (the usual in the area) in and around the Coleman Pinnacle and to the south.  Then, there is of course the Sholes and Rainbow.  The Rainbow offered a fairly lengthy ski run for us last weekend down to it's toe.   ;)
Nice report, Mark.
Up to your usual "good read" quality.
I'v come upon water emanating from a hole in the surface of the glacier, but I never been the primary cause of the flow.  That must have been quite a start.
Glad you've still got stuff to ski up there.  We've already downgraded to "recon hikes" 'til the end of September.
Keep up the great work.
thats a great pic!

what are those two peaks in the background? i'm not familiar with the area.
And to the question of face shots (in June): absolutely.

One of the (very few) advantages of shooting film, using mailers, and being busy is that sometimes you don't file your ski pictures until the dog days of summer. So, here's a reminder of the season just passed. That's June 15th powder John is skiing on the Park Glacier.

Silas: Thanks for the post; I had a blast! The turns rejuvenated me until I can find some (meager) snow next month. Hope you'll join me then, or have a good outing planned I can tag along for.
Huh, I heard it was re-christened the Babe Bucket.  It had been the Rust Bucket but Jerry painted one of the seats in it.
Only one CM, nothing repels women like a station wagon ;) ,
Jerry: Your boat is no doubt christened the "Chick Magnet II"?
Sounds like I missed a good trip. I was stuck on my boat watching scantily clad women, Blue Angels and oh yeah hydroplanes  ;)   See you soon ---- Jerry

Markharf and I were on the Sholes Glacier the Sunday before. I thought that maybe someone would be interested in a different view of the area in question.
It was a very fun ski, and the weather couldn't have been better.  Thanks to everyone who contributed to our potluck BBQ.  Yum  ;D
Hey Corey, we planned it that way so you could see that you were truly missing the goods  ;).  Seriously, I wanted to go higher, but Paul and Amar insisted on doing more skiing than "traversing".  My thirst for crevasse travel was quite high that day!  8)
Good show.  That makes 2 years in a row that you guys skied on Baker in August the same day I went down to Timberline.  Kind of a wierd coincidence.  Had fun though, and got to spend a night down at Breitenbush relaxing, so a pretty good weekend.

Hey Amar, I'm about to write you a pm on another topic altogether...  Check it!
The Russell looks pretty scrumptious. How long does it take to get to where you start skinning from the parking lot?
Thanks for the info.  Next time, maybe next weekend, I will spend a day or two up there.

Damn mosquitos >:(
Interesting. Just based on pix I've seen and personal experience it appears that the lake has alternated from brown to green to brown at least twice since 2000. Meee-yow!
Snoslut: there would be a ton of carvable vert on the Russell. Other reports indicate that a typical high point before the bombing range is a knob on Ptarmigan Ridge at 9200; it's a little hard to see but that knob appears in my photo just a little R of dead center, and would have been where I'd gone w more time (note: other...
Very nice report, Charles.
That's always a reliable and enduring destination, albiet not as close to the car as geezers prefer.
It is always fun to meet new folks to enjoy the backcountry with (Jordy and Lara, for me) as well as ski with others that you haven't seen for a while. Lara drew quite quite a crowd, eh?  :)
And hey, MadDog, great job on the Apre' BBQ/Tailgate Party!!  It was especially fun with the mix of new and familiar folks.  MadDog and I were commenting on...
Interesting.
Here it is in August of 2000:

Don't ask me; I haven't got a clue  :)
BTW, great TR, Wolfs, lots of good info.
Here is the lake in October 2000:

Looks pretty brown.
So that was you we bumped into on our way up.  We were the party with boarder and 2 skiers with rando set up.  We never did make it to the Russell but from your picture it made me wish I did.  By the time we reached the highest point or snow under Oberservation Rock (7950ft.) it was around 2 or 3 in the afternoon.  Run down to Cateye lake was soft and carvable.  Suncups were present but not as bad as I had anticipated.  Only if we had more time the Flett headwall looked really inviting.  Real st...
To car by 1:10 (close enough).
Hey, Coleman/Deming was a great trip that I would highly recommend.  We hit snow at 6,000 feet and I would imagine that since it seemed fairly glacial that it has not receded much higher.  The approach was on a beautiful trail through the woods, Trailhead 2,700 ft.  snow 6,000.
Hey wolfs, thanks for the report. I was wondering what things would be like there now. Too bad there is not a shorter approach to the Russell. I noticed that Cat-Eye Lake was not its usual color a month ago, but though that the silt would have settled out by now. I don't recall ever having seen the lake like that - it sounds like some drainage pattern has changed.

So did you make it back to the trailhead by 1?
Poorly. We barely got on the Park proper.
The photographers captured a lot of truly unique images, like nothing I have ever seen before related to skiing.

Good thing there were lots of us taking pictures.  I had all intentions of sitting on the side lines with Ron and snapping shots all day, but when we saw how much fun everyone was having we had to also join in.  It was amazing how easy it was once you hit the water, to keep going as long as you had the speed and didn't...
Yes, great captions and photos, Ron!

Jerry, Skip, Ron, and Jeanette generously agreed to let me use some of their photos for a home page gallery (this coming Monday, 8/9), and after working with the photos I almost feel like I was there. The photographers captured a lot of truly unique images, like nothing I have ever seen before related to skiing. Having not actually been there, I lifted some caption ideas from posts in this thread and the photo galleries already posted by the photograph...
we're headed up to Artist Point tomorrow & see how far onto the Park glacier we can get (unless we decide to ski that steep north face on the Sholes instead...Paul:) - northeast side is probably in somewhat similar condition to Coleman-Deming this time of year.
We're thinking about going to Mt. Baker 8/21, but not sure if its worth it, snow coverage wise.  We went up Skyline Divide last year on 8/8, and it was good snow.  Now, we want to go up that route or any other route that would be pretty safe.  We don't have cramp ons or rope, but we want to ride!!!  Any suggestions on what would be good in a couple weeks?
Thanks for the great photos Ron!  Nice commentary ;)
Woo Hoo  :D
We got us a Grudge Match!!
Anyone else want in on this?
Maybe you guys should consider putting up an entry fee so you will have a purse to win.  Then Jerry and MadDog could break out the score cards again  ;D
Allright >:(  Username, your on for next year.  One on one for the Slush Cup.  I'll even learn to snowboard just for it. ;D
I don't know what you're talking about.  I don't have skis.  Skiing blows.  Why would anybody want to ski?  I've been secretly cross-training on a wakeboard so that my slush-cup debut will break the worldwide slush-cupping arena wide open.  Now if I could only get my shotgunning technique down, I could sweep the entire meet...
Finally got my shots up.
They're at:

There's some interesting baths in there  ;) most of which you've already seen, but these are from different angles.
Now I'll work on some descriptive captions for them.
Actually, I believe that Sag had skis before Username....and I know for sure that Username's 163 Crossbows are very, very sexy.  ;D
Looks like fun everyone!

I gotta get up there twice next year...once in June and once in August for this.

Ps. Nice wipe out jimjar...could it be those hardboots were tooo sensitive for this application? ;)

Pss. First username gets skis...now sag... ???
Thanks. I like that wickstad. Poetry seems like a lost form anymore.
I think that is the fastest and easiest approach.  A lot of the "kitty litter" is the disturbance caused by the goats.  This area is heavily trampled and there are areas that resemble nests, where I assume that goats bed down often.

Having seen this, I wonder if using that route is actually advised, since there seems to be potential to disturb animals that the NFS is concerned about.  On the other hand, we all know that the area is used by humans often and it is c...
