Nice, high quality video.  Good humor too.

What kind of skis are you using?  They're different from anything I've skied before.  Do they have little jet packs that provide thrust at the end of the turn?  Also perhaps a bulbous bow to keep the tips floating?  What are those things?
I made a video, but it also includes our Saturday trip to Alpental, and our Sunday trip to Hidden Lake Peak.

That is a very cool video. Looks like a blast!
Thank Jeff

I will try it thanks. I did Broken Top yesterday. 10-12 inc fresh snow from Saturday Sunday Bachelor , Broken Top, Sister area . I am heading MT Hood for Summit. Snow here is very good now. But south faces, because of sun effect lost powder condition get heavyer. Rest fresh and powder.

yo, sweet shots.  wish i was there instead of dreaming of being there...

I would much prefer a Dusk Patrol, I can't regularly miss classes. Leave Seattle at 2ish would work great. Anyone?

I would be interested for sure, pbelitz.  Just say when.
That fire in the sky is quite nice. Great shot! I see sunrise from my bike at dawn, and today looked good with the freshies on the peaks. I've been itching for some pow on the skis. Thanks for showing us what you're tasting.
Some screen-grabs from the video camera:

Can you spot the snowboarder?
Thanks philfort,
It's a little casio camera that fits in my pocket. Kinda hard to hold steady.

As promised, here's my amateur video

Thanks Sky, I don't like to think I'm melodramatic (place sky's TR here), but in this case I may have been. Blame it on the year or my desire to always be spinning a yarn. I'm not the most analytical and factually inclined person in the world. Engineers? Now they are both! And physicists, well they just work with theory and possibility and make facts to fit there analyzes :)

Here is my addition to the discussion of chains, risk and group size FWIW.

Chains are an important factor t...
No worries DP.

Hey Stimbuck - hope all is well with the hwy crew - must be slow this year. Say hello to Gibb, Lee and Craig when you get a chance. Hopefully we'll see you soon up at Alpy.
Dawn Patrol next week anyone?

what, more magic?  okay.  ...but not always ;D

I am in awe of your prodigious ability to portray the extremely powdery conditions today!
:D
..... magic... ;D

Dawn Patrol next week anyone?

does a worm p**p dirt?
And now I'm paying the price of not-much-sleep.  But I guess the 2000ft+ of nice morning powder was worth it  ;D

Ditto! A beautiful morning with a great powder breakfast!  ;D  pbeliz, philfort, skykilo, & username: Nice meeting you all in Edelweiss bowl this morning!

Excellent trip! Sorry I missed you guys this morning, but I'm sure glad that someone got out on a great day like today.

Dawn Patrol next week anyone?
Hahaha, wtf, Kam, I think you have a magic camera that makes everyone look awesome, and all snow, powder... ;D
Lowell your analysis is good.  I also like the chain concept, and it makes a lot of sense.

Of course at some level, being a homosapien and all that, I do care what others think.  With that particular comment I specifically meant that I don't care if we're perceived as 'extreme' or not.  As a matter of fact, I'm glad not too many other people want to do this kind of stuff; long live the wilderness feel of the Cacades!

Your conclusion was sensible, and in terms...

I let morning classes persuade me not to go (and lack of a car).  Now I am paying the cruel, jealous price.
This may not be true for others, who will remain unnamed unless they beg to identify themself.

This hurts me.
Alpental did NOT suck today.

Thanks for the wonderful pics, Kam.

I'll have photos and video up at some point.

;D

PS: three coreshots between Sky, me, and Justin. It's still a bit thin.

Coreshots or no coreshots, I still can't convince myself that I'm glad that I came to work.  Great photos as usual, Kam.

I'm hoping to make it out sometime in the next week if the weather holds.
As any venture tends to do this season, mine and others' p-tex suffered miserably.  But on the other hand, it was also graced with a bountiful depth of fluffy white goodness.  The translucent steed led a blissful and capricious existence, right up until its inevitable deconvolution at the hands of voracious earth-excrement.

All will be glad to know that it is indeed possible to emulate the genuine backcountry experience, while still remaining within imaginary boundaries of rela...

Joe, thanks for the report.  I thought about Silver Basin but I'll save the bases for northern BC.    Zap

My comments were intended to get people thinking. I think they did.

After reading the posts over in the Observation Rock thread, I think what I was trying to say got lost. The issue has degenerated into whether a cliff jump or a 360 (or both, or neither) is reckless. I think that misses the point. The point, for me, is awareness of...
Hey Doug, thanks--- good to ski with you! Join us any time.  8)
Jerry- That's a fun movie, but what's all that grainy white stuff??  Oh yeah, that'd be snow!!

You were the powerhouse working the fall line on Bundy's.  I was taking mental notes and hope to be that direct and fearless in the fall line some day.

It was great to finally meet "the regulars."  Characters, I'm telling you!  I'll be riding your coat tails more often...if I can keep up.  Ron and crew vanished into the flurries like true pros...a clean...
Hey Jan!

Good to hear you're out and about.  The return trail from source lake isn't that bad.

Sorry for the age crack, Jan! I guess those of us still clinging to our fading 20's need to distinguish ourselves from the over-35 crowd or something. For what it's worth, I was impressed... Thanks (and to Michael and Scott too) for sharing in the trail-breaking duties.
Nice job Jer, thanks for the Tuesday morning smiles  ;D
Jerry - good video and music!  Another beautiful day at Mt. Rainier!
Nice viddy, Sky.
And the trip appeared to go clear to the "story for the grandkids" level in torture points.
As for rendering a decision on the sanity of the jump, I'll demur on that.  It seems to me like too much of a personal thing to come up with any measurable criteria; too many variables.  "One man's meat is another man's poison".  What might be a "sporty" line to one might mean certain death to another if within miles of it.  <...
Another fine Spielberg Keeper.
Keep up the good work, Jerman.
OK you guys can judge for yourselves.  The following *it* a 7meg .wmv video that includes me doing some *step* skiing.

Fair enough. Unfortunately, I'm on a slow dialup connection, so I'll leave it to others to make their own judgments. My comments were intended to get people thinking. I think they did.
I think those two you passed were my friend Scott and I. We followed your ascent route up lower international.

We crossed to the BC and dug a few pits for the heck of it. We got moderate shears (cant remember the number) that were not 'clean.'. There wasnt much of a slab at all with the layer coming off the pit in mostly unconsolidated pieces. The layer at the bottom of all that fluff might be something to watch when  we get more snow. Seemed like a good bit of graupel or something -...
Remember Where's Waldo?

Can you find my name?

Edit: I pulled pic so the author could post his own, I just thought it was pretty cool as the above discussion was about tracks!  (and yes, that was Alpental Monday morning)
OK you guys can judge for yourselves.  The following *it* a 7meg .wmv video that includes me doing some *step* skiing.  Josh shot it, and I did a little editing.
Ski Mt Blum.

I only jumped about 20 feet; my narrative describes Jason, who took it a little bigger.  I'll leave it for a few days before I remove the behemoth video file.

Hi DP. There's a good chance that was me you were skiing with - two ships passing in the mist...

"Middle aged dude" - that hurts ;) but rings true I guess...

Assuming that was you breaking trail most of the way up lower I and then I caught up with and broke trail from there to where the mid BC gate usually goes ~ 5000 ft. You've got a beard and I had black pants/blue jacket/AT skis?

I ended up de-skinning just 100 ft higher below a rock outcrop and did a little...
I was out there yesterday too. I concur with the fat ski comments. I now have 106mm underfoot. However, I hit more rocks and ground debris yesterday than I have all this season. Even the end of November seemed to have a better base developed than yesterday, oh well, maybe I wasn't skiing enough lee slopes.
We skinned up to Lower International, but didn't ascent the entire slope. It looked like it was just core shots waiting to happen, although we did see what must have been Michael's tracks in one spot that looked ok.

Hey Daniel,

good to see you had a great morning!...no - I am not jealous ;-)
The tracks you saw were probably not mine since I went up on the left side (next to Armstrong and then under Edelweiss). Pretty rocky as well th...
What a fantastic morning!  Clear skies, the temperature was just right, and the snow was really nice.  I shot some pictures also, but they're almost all blurry.

There was a lot of evidence of wind action on the snow, though, and some of those buildups might be problematic when they consolidate.   If there's a warming cycle, you'll probably have to be a bit more careful on the steeper slopes.
