We skied as much as we could on all north slopes just east of the coleman pinnacle down to the basin and drainage. A good 1000 foot drops it seemed like.
I am still giddy from the effortless turns we had in the baking sun :)

So, Scott, did you pretty much stick to north facing aspects?
The Ptarmigan Ridge/Coleman Pinnacles area has given me my best day of skiing in two years about 10 times already this winter. Tomorrow, I hope, will make eleven!
Yeah, I noticed the crust developing on sun affected slopes like Edelwiess but North Facing is still super nice, or at least it was on Tuesday. I'm sure that crust will be corn soon enough with the forecast we have.
Skiing was bad today.
Who care about the skiing, skinning with Dynafits beats any good day of skiing!
I even got a blister, thanks to the TLT4s.
Your Dynafits will prefer if you call them "love marks".
PS: Excellent photo Greg!
Skiing was bad today. Skinned to the summit in 1hr 10 minutes, courtesy of Dynafit. Circumstances prevented me from skiing upper nash, so I 'skied' Edelweiss bowl instead. 2" sun crust. Wild jumps to buttchecks were the order of the day.
The snow beneath the Armstrong Express is getting better but still quite bad.
I made five powder turns though, so it was definitely worth it.

Nice photo.
Yeah didn't end up skiing Wednesday, I've been having back problems and strained it a bit on Tuesday. But the awesome conditions Sun-Tues have me pretty stoked. I'll hopefully be back on the hill on Sunday, and I'm on vacation next week if any of y'all might be up at the Alp.

Cem,
You should put skijouring in your title, I have a friend who is really into that who posts on this site. I am sure he would be interested in swapping dog stories with you.

Sounds like you had a good day, will look forward to meeting you and your girlfriend sometime on the mt. 8)
woa! I'm just now catching-up on this thread (been outta-town for a few days); Great pics as always! ;) Nice report Ron! Looks like the "geezers" had yet another nice stash all to themselves ;) Fortunately there was lots of room for fresh tracks at Mazama Bowl; nice seeing/meeting everyone out there last Sunday!
Michael (aka nordic ned): excellent photos... ;)
i love you man.
- Mr. K. A. Sutra.
Thanks Dr. Asutra. Love you too Tele Ted.
It's good we are so close to Valentine's day :-)
Paul: Kam, Kelvin and i are actually thinking/working on that. the idear is to build a standard base plate that mounts to a ski, and the top plate (with whatever binding) "slips and locks" in place. it'll make sharing our skis more convenient. any idears you can offer will help. like what color? ;)

Kam, can you guys come out with an insert pattern that fits Dynafits, Fritschis, Silverettas, and tele bindings? I'll buy some if/when you do. ;)
Nice report, Markey.
Thanks for the info.
Oh, and Welcome :)

Uhhh . . . sure! Do I have to tele?
..unless you want to pay EXTRA to cover the "AT" tax. ;D
I'm presuming that you're giving the championship for 'icy death ramp' to Baker's Chair One. When I snowboarded there (and in most ways I'd consider myself intermediate at it) I would have at best 70% success rate at ramps on 1,4/5 and 6 but fortunately the latter 2 have been fixed up since. Then there's the old Thunderbird ramp at Summit - remember that? Whee!
More on topic, went up Alpental this morning 2/17. Sessel was pretty cut up and not that much fun. Lower I had some good spots bu...

It's called Edelweiss chair, or chair 2, both of which are made perfectly clear by the sign on the lift reading "Chair 17."
At the top, incidentally, is the state's runner up for the "icy death ramp" ski lift run-out award. Intermediate snowboarders pile up 3 deep at times.

Greg: lookin' good. that's a nice photo!! but it looks like you need fatter skis ;). btw, Kelvin and i are thinking about laying up a pair of 140mm (at the waist) with zero camber. wanna test ride 'em for us ?? ;D
Hey, I'd like to see the KamSki works . . . what are the dimensions on the "skinny" one?
skinny? i don't know what you're talking about.
the black pair shown above, called the Klown Whackers (or to some, Klown Kickers), have dimensions: 130-95-125mm, length 177.2334 cm.
And the fat one, is that the "ahma", as in "yo real mama" for Chinese kids?

Glad to hear that the snow is still soft up there. Nice photo!

Yeah I remember speaking with a few skiers up there. Were you the one I offered the share our shelter with? Though brief, it was nice to met you.
I was one of those skiers who gave up on the summer route ;) I think I met you guys while you were digging your shelter.
That giant pack of snowshoers was a boy scout troop apparently. They looked pretty cold and whiney ;D

hey nice pics michael and kamo...you guys sure do know how to make folks look cool :D...and as for the geezers, well, you sure do know how to make folks jealous, what with all your "secret stashes" and all! :) nice report, and, clever names for the runs too.

Hey, I'm lucky I remember anything from that trip. I guess we really did take lots of breaks, but none for food or drink, just to take skins off or put them back on.
Some of us were in such a hurry we kept one skin on during the descents, so we didn't have to waste time putting it back on for the uphill; sounds like one of the Southern group at Paradise uses that strategy, too.

Well, hmmmm, let's see this year I'm going to be the speed limit ;) 8)
WOW!!!
Awesome pics guys.
That is great that there are so many people that add to this site.
It was great to meet you all and I am looking forward to the next outing.
If anyone is going next weekend, let me know!!!
Take care everyone.
Bryan
P.S.
Kam, I love that your pics make it look so deep up there.
That is how we make the Wasatch snow look so good!!!

Of course, I was hurt to my core when Ultragrrl & Co. spurned my peace offering of a half-eaten, burnt-coffee-grounds-and-straw flavored energy bar,
Mark
Ah, but one might be foolish to partake of a Sherpa's goodies on such a magnificent expedition.
oh yeah, and, don't trust old people ;)
Welcome paramagic.
I think a "geezer" is anyone that's more than 20 years older that the person doing the defining ;)
In my case 40+ is still a young pup :)
However you define them we're all just backcountry sliders enjoying the mountains together; some just go faster than others. Hope to meet you up there soon.

-zzzzziiiiiip- heheh, looks like we caught ourselves some skiers! ;D
Hain't no one caught me yet, Justin (probably snagged your hook on a chunk of Tim's savannah carrion). It was an amazing thing, watching an untouched line suddenly accumulate 20 or so tracks, but everyone sounded pretty pleased to be there nonetheless. Wow, Kam, Michael, Dick, and Jeanette, great pictures you guys. It's fun to see so many great photos show up on a bc skiing site from just one day's skiing.
And Jerry, GREAT video, and cranked out in record time. You're really getting you production skills dialed in.
Let's all go do it again!

Define geezer; a couple of old, broke-down, tele-skier Alaskans in exile want in! We're taking our walkers up tomorrow, hope to run into some of you 40+'ers...
Mark: Yeah that was us. No need to be sorry though.
And to everyone, sorry for the whining. I think everyone is out looking for a fresh line and I think anyone would be disappointed if they happened upon a large group of peeps all in the same place at the same time.
Next time I'll have lunch and doddle at the bottom of the run. Yep,yep, yep :D
I think everyone missed

You guys really ought to try the Baker backcountry sometimes. This bitching about other folks getting your line first, skiing what has already been cut, looking for a fresh patch for a few turns -- that is the psychological set of area skiing.
This year, especially on weekends, the Bagley Basin is not backcountry, it is non-lift served area skiing. Just like the Arm or Hemis, but without the diesel assist.

just as we were about ready to drop in some skiers came and stole our glorious fresh tracks...luckily there was plenty for all.
If you were three snowshoing snowboarders who skied to Iceberg Lake immediately following a great many skiers....well, sorry. We were the second group of skiers, and while we were complaining about the first group, the third group of skiers (who came skinning across the lake and followed you up the hill) w...

I must confess first tracks this morning, Tony. I, too, was surprised at my solitude.
It was snowing lightly at my house in Snoqualmie at 4:45 am when I left. I slide it into 4 wheel drive after negotiating the driveway, in anticipation of a light convergence, and the radar didn't lie, it was white all the way up the hill. Despite the grass still showing at Exit 42, it looks to be a good day. The croon of "I am The Matador" throbs through the sys...

Great shots Kam! Thanks for sharing. And those homemade fatties are sweet looking. Keep crafting.
As Geezer #4, I can attest that this trip had great: powder, slopes and company. For inquiring minds, I can provide one more data point for those studying which combination of skins and skis works best for downhill travel: one skin on and one skin off does not work well. Of course, it does add a little extra challenge...

I'll third that, a group of 3 that end up being 7 toured up the I-5 size of skin track to the top of chair two via Gunmount. Looked into Upper Nash and was clean(except for two other boarder tracks) and well covered with 16" of new. Alpental Cory dug a pit before we dropped in ( we wanted to ski it real bad.) We found a 16" fresh on top of a 1 " sun layer and then the 10" from last weekend. All in all the bonding look O.K. But I dropped in on the steeper entrance and go...

Ron J and Gang: i knew it! you always know where to find untracked snow... :)
anyway, it was good to see you, Mad_Dog and JW at the parking lot. our posse had a great time around Mazama Ridge. though more crowded than usual, making fresh tracks wasn't a problem. there was definitely a firm crust underneath the 2-6" of new, but it was supportive. i shot some photos, and hopefully the names match the riders.

Grrrr...I knew I'd regret not going skiing this past weekend - sounds like you all had a great time :)
Forgot my camera. I have asked my two companions on the ascent to email me some photos. When I get some pics I will forward to Charles.
