Great report, Darryl.
So how's your knee feel this morning?

Hi, I was up there Sunday from about 1000 to 1200. Not as nice as saturday but pretty good. I have tuesdays and wednesdays off. I was planning on trying to get up there for a few hours maybe both days. I might be able to find some time for Steven's but I'm pretty busy in town. Wednesday might be good though. My phone number is 667-1985. Give me a call, Aaron
tdave, thanks for rounding out the trip report by adding the Friday portion. From the looks of Brian's pics you certainly were rewarded for being there that day.
Yes, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Nikon was snapping photos while I was wondering why it was not snapping photos. What, me worry? ???
I agree, Rob and Jim are great guys. Thanks again to you, Jim, for helping to set up my tent Saturday night. Knowing that I was going to be wet all day...

It doesn't sound like hairshirt asceticism to me. Very nice.

sounds like you were trying some fancy maneuvers up there, Darryl! glad everything turned out okay and that you ended up not too injured.
i'm also glad to hear that the conditions were somewhat winter-like up there this weekend. (is it really snowing in that picture mad dog took of you? or is that some tricky camera work?) hmm,...perhaps there is a little bit of winter left yet (knock on wood, don't want to jinx it)
:)

Thanks for the TR and photo, JibberD. And you told me you'd flubbed the pic.
This weekend's snow conditions impressed me too. I saw the pics from Jibber and Jerry's trip last weekend...what a difference. I only hope that it continues.
I don't mean to rub your nose in it, Jibber, but Friday was definitely the better day. 10" of fresh with more or less clear skies. I only wish that I hadn't worn myself out so toting that 18 pack of Tecate into camp. ;D But Jon and I did manage t...

Yep, Darryl's right don't try that at home, there is something to be said for those releasable bindings. I really think Darryl did that north/south knee trick on purpose just to loosen up, because he skied in great form for the rest of the day.

Yep Joe the snow was sure deep in some places. Glad nothing became of the whoomfs Bill and you heard. BTW did you ever bump into that snowmobiler?
The possible sounds could have been the thin suncrust layer from Fridays direct sun settling since there was no hoar layer ???
There were at least 3 snowmobilers buzzing around-2 lift maintainence and one running skiers up the hill >:(. The machines gotta take a beating on the d...
Just back in Wenatchee on Spring Break, I was up there Sunday morning. Not bad. Aaron, would you be interested in any trips this week? I am looking for a partner to do something maybe up the Stevens way (or MR again).
Yep Joe the snow was sure deep in some places. Glad nothing became of the whoomfs Bill and you heard. We kept our radars on all day in the valley. Since we stayed primarly on cat tracks the danger was low. I'd say the steepiest slope we tackled yesterday was no greater than 30 degrees and if it was greater it wasn't for long before it petered out. Jim and I did manage to board cut the slope. No signs of instablity but with more snow and wind/cross loading I'm...
Hmmm. I'm not so sure. We left it off with a "see ya around..."

I think we watched you two ski that line. We ran up right after you and found nothing but huge snowballs that you two had littered the entrance. Decided to move to a smoother line. Thanks a lot. :)

Nice report Snoslut-Good to see you and the Jarman at the base.
Bill and I broke away from the Sturtevants group-they went North Three way and we went up to the base of Silver.
The new snow was really deep-2 to 3ft in some areas. Since I had been skiing here the last several days and the weather was wild our tour decision was based on multiple aspect Hasty pits dug to the ice layer the last several days. The bond to the ice is good, but I don't think it would hold a large load of snow un...

Great report Eric and once again good call on heading to Crystal.
A bad day skiing is better than a good day stripping wallpaper. Looks like you had a good couple of days skiing, so it makes perfect sense to me.
Unfortunately I'm checking in from NYC, where there is no snow on the ground at this point. I'm hoping we get some more March/April snow dumps so I can remember what fresh snow feels like under my skis! Thanks for the nice photo of Tdave - he's got a nice stable tele turn for sure!

Who was it you skiied with? I am new to Wenatchee and looking for partners for touring. I now a few people who tour but not much, they are more into skating and xc. Do you know if any of these people post or lurk on TAY? Thanks, Aaron
I don't think they will reopen, they have the concrete baricades in place blocking th lower lot and the gate is closed. Someone drove up as I returned to the truck and opened the gate, drove trough and closed the gate behind. I think this was probably an employee just going skiing, because I saw new skin tracks on the webcam when I got home. The snow was pretty good, fairly light and just above the ankle on skis. Skiing on the runs they had open before they closed will be great for awhile...
Hey great TR ! Keep em coming!
Sounds interesting. Does this mean that Misson ridge ski area won't be opening again? Condition of the snow? Depth ?
Thanks for posting

We did the Black Peak tour last Sat, March 12. Monika made reference to our trip above, but no other TR. Yes, it's a great area and one of my favorites as well. Hope your ski trip this weekend goes well. Should be a very different trip from ours with the change in weather and some new snow.
Appreciate all the comments on the pics. I just converted to digital (reluctantly) and its great to make images available -- now that I've figured out how.

When did you do the tour? Is there a trip report? The pics are great. It' one of my favorite spots. I've camped and climbed, but this weekend will be the first time to ski.

How do you resize your images when you insert them into a TR? I've tried doing it from my comcast homepage. I get the image to show up, but it always comes out way too large regardless of my resizing it on my homepage. hyak mentioned downloading a tool which I didn't have much luck with...is that what you're using?
Ok, so Darryl, what new trick was that off the shoulder ski fly down to the river deal then?? ;) ;D
Ya, I'm inventing that too! It is the wind-carried ski lift. Just like we use gravity to PULL us down hill, I'm inventing a technique to use the wind to carry my skis uphill. I think I almost have it invented.
The shake after my fall is to test if everything is still connected. I thought maybe somethin...
Paul: excellent photos!!!! thanks for sharing. ;)

Good stuff here Jerry.
More cow bell is all I'd add. Always, MORE COW BELL...
I especially like the way Darryl shakes it off after his recovery...some cow bell at that shake would be oscar material.
Hey, maybe your prediction last weekend of 24" of new snow at Paradise in March isn't so crazy after all. The cow bell is a-clangin' on that call!
OK, I'll stop now... But only after I blame all the cow bell nonsense on sleep deprivation.

I did NOT fall. I'm inventing a new way to slide on variable snow conditions which will PREVENT me from falling..........

Jerry - GREAT movie. I did NOT fall. I'm inventing a new way to slide on variable snow conditions which will PREVENT me from falling. There is no such thing as BAD snow, only bad skiers.
To keep up with Maureen, I'm going to have to improve my ski abilities.

Very fun video Jer, ;D thanks for the smiles this morning. 8)
Great video, Jerry.
I don't know how you crank them things out so fast, yet still keep them so entertaining.
And Darryl, nice job getting the feet downhill and getting stopped.

... 8300'. ...
burly! that's over eight-times more than what i normally do in a day. glad to hear everyone had fun!
The last two posts make me want to get some outabounds and ressurect my old Merrill leather boots...
Here is another groovy movie ----- Call to 911 Sorry Darryl,I had to include your spectacular fall (it went well with the music) and thanks to Jibber for taking the camera for a few shots.
how was Black Peak? was that 9:30pm that you made it back to the car? wow. so how was the snow on the south side?
well, awesome views as you know plus 1/3 ice climbing/crossing, 1/3 night skiing, part creek crossings (we were attempting to a loop via Last Chance Pass but not enough snow so ended up backtracking) and I'd say about 1400' "almost corn" out of 8300'. you may be thinking "yikes!" and with any n...
Until that posser learns how to ski, he better not be using my name ;)
Sorry I missed seeing you all this weekend; I was hoping too! Did a long adventure on the s. side of Black Peak Saturday and got back late (9:30) and then the bday tour Sun.
hi Monika! good to hear you were in the area. how was Black Peak? was that 9:30pm that you made it back to the car? wow. so how was the snow on the south side?

When we exited this way on Saturday and the wind was howling on the ridge. As each skier decended the ice particles would blast the followers waiting in the queue. We laughed that we needed earplugs because the skiing was so loud. But better skiing out than the alternative.
ps. to the rest of the WA splitters...you guys missed out big time! ;)
Yeah, but how often do you get to relish the lowest snow year in 30 years? Ok, so about every 30 years (we hope)...
Tahoe. So close, yet so far away. >:(
Nice job guys...
Here's a photo of it from last June . Looks like for a "pure" descent, you'd need to do all 3 portions ;)
Of course, the two benches might deduct more from the hot-slot scale than the extra vertical would add...
And a close-up
Maybe, but I'm pretty certain that there was water running...
Which way did you guys come out?Heya Joe! Great to see you again last Saturday!
We finished the BD tour via the small pass and very icy E-facing couloir on the ridge north of Copper Peak (north of "Kangaroo Pass"); then made the descending traverse in the Early Winter's Creek drainage to the hairpin turn at Hwy 20. A generous snowboarder driving a Volvo gave me a ride back the Blue Lake trailhead to retrieve the car :)
Sun cups?
I was there Sunday and I would catagorize them a human foot cups! :)
