Jerry, your sense of humor is excellent!  Nice editing and camera work on the video.

Next time, instead of more cow bell, I'm calling for more Jerry segments.  I'll work on cleaning out my "goo pocket" so I can carry the camera more without turning it into a sticky carbo-loaded mess.

Mad_Dog, thanks for the kind words of reconciliation regarding "coming in hot".  Sometimes my learning curve seems as steep and long as Liberty Ridge.

Ron, I c...

Monika, you might want to see this film before you get to class tonight  ;D
;D

I'm not at work today to use a PC and have only a Mac at home so unfortunately I'll have to wait.

thank you everyone for another fun trip.  Those s. facing slopes were sure nice.

In loving memory of Susan Mcknight my backcountry ski partner and adopted mom:

>>Did you guys ski from the saddle in the picture?
We skiied from a couple hundred feet above the saddle.  Although the avy conditions were particularly stable, I still felt a bit uneasy about the somewhat wind-loaded conditions higher up the glacier; thus, we did not venture much above the saddle.

>>How far up Mountaineer Creek road could you drive?
I made it all the way to the TH in my 4WD Tacoma--I would not have wanted to try it in a vehicle with less clearance.  Roa...
My photos aren't quite as entertaining as Jerry's video, but you can see more skiing shots HERE.  ;D  8)
It was a great day, indeed! Thank you all again for making my 30th even more special.  Now, where are we going next? :)
I'm interested in more beta, too!
More information please...I'm leaning toward a couple days in the area this weekend....

Were you able to skin in or did you have to boot pack?

Ranger said road was clear to within 2 miles of trailhead, true?

Was the slope below Asgard (sp?) Pass skiable as well?
Great Grins on the viddy, Jerman.
I don't know how you keep coming up with the great films.  We'll have to start calling you the "Animal Editor".

Monika, you might want to see this film before you get to class tonight  ;D

Other items of note to Paradise sliders...

The Paradise Valley road was plowed to blacktop at least one machine wide but not open.  Reflection Lakes road (Stevens Canyon) appeared totally cleared at the west end but barricaded......
What Zap said, though I have skied on Tallac via the Summer TH before. It was during a period of low snow coverage. We hiked the summer trail to the base of Tallac's southern bowls. The trail is longer then access from Spring Creek, but it was a quick hike devoid of snow.

This flash presentation on The Backcountry Store's site has other tour directions:

Bill f enjoying the powder on Mt Tallac:

Or the year-round skier on modified water skis with tele bindings?

the key word here is: skis  ;D

...or then again, "half a binding, half a brain" ;)
Zap,

Just returned from Bishop.  Awesome.  Skied Basin to 7,400' in the sagebrush, Birch right to Mc Murray Meadows and Mc Gee, of course, with bomber corn.

Conditions in NE couloirs were touchy and the tragedy of the skiers dieing on Mt Tom has the town a little spooked, but my 14,000 Vf in three days confirmed: the eastern Sierra is open for business, get it while the snowpack is deep.
Bill,   Jill and I were at the Mt. Tallac TH on Sunday afternoon.  For those looking for the TH, you turn north on Hwy 89 at the "Y" junction with hwy 50. Go north 4 miles to Spring Creek Rd. and turn left, go .6 miles and turn right on Pomo Rd.and go to end about .3 miles.  I was checking out TH for future trips to Tallac, Maggies Peak,.. From the gate along hwy 89, I could see some great lines, yours :), on Mt. Tallac in the upper bowl, down the cliffs and trees.  ...
well, at least you got a picture of a really cute dog (how long did you tempt him with that candy bar?? poor charlie...).  and i have to say that skip looks pretty dang cool flying off that log too.  not too bad of a day then, i suppose?
;D
Did you guys ski from the saddle in the picture?
Yup that was done using the Extract filter as discussed on "forum b". It was pretty time consuming to do, but now that I know how to I think it'll be faster in the future.
Cool sequence, Jeff. Was this done using the Photoshop "extract" function as recently mentioned on forum "B"? All we need now is the side-by-side comparision with Bode Miller doing the same turn . . . on Dynafits.
;DThis had to be one of the best trips of the year. ;D Polarhounda, the wind picked up a couple times but died off immediately. For the most part the day was warm and sunny, perfect spring skiing.

A great day of skiing with a great group.  I think we're going to have to make Lara's Birthday Tour an annual event.  Followed, of course, by a stop at the Eatery for Tootsie's burgers.
looks great and completely diferent than what we experienced on the same mountain
we took off from Timberline @ 6:30 am headed up to the palmer glacier, it was cold, cloudy and wind blowing gusts in excess of 60mph. on the way up the galcier we gat a peak of the mountain on rare ocasions until we got to the top of the lift were everything opened up for us. it was a beutiful blue ski day, the wind was still howling we proceeded up the glacierto the devils kitchen snow condition were good.

This week's lesson: "Coming in hot ain't cool."  Duly noted and registered.  A jibber is never done learning.
 ;D
Jibber is a good listener and plays well with others  ;D  ;D

All joking aside it was a good day with great skiers, we found our slice of paradise and made hay while the sun shined. The way Monika climbs, I think she should be on the cover of the "Wheaties" box.   ;D

check back, photos coming later.
It was a scenic tour but not enough vertical gain.

Heh - sounds like a classic Sierra Club trip!
Those Californians are not worthy of you, Zap.  Are you ever coming home?
Shoot,  >:( what a bummer in Friday's News Tribune it said Crystal's last day was this Sunday (10th), but I see now, that CM told a little fib, ??? HERE.

I guess the only thing you can count on for sure is death and taxes  ;D

We (Hayes, Dalius, Ryan, and I) were in Commonwealth also today.  Couldn't really decide where to go and ended up heading toward Red Mountain.  We turned around at 5000 feet up a rib at 1pm because the snow we found was a firm supporting crust.  We didn't think the descent down the west face would be worth the work to get there.  The descent down from our high point was interesting to say the least.  A few fun turns were had in softer patches of snow here and there and I...
The ski down was of the nature found fun by only the most fringe of ski personalities: the year-round skier.

Or the year-round skier on modified water skis with tele bindings?
Yeah, thanks, Haz,
Amar spotted it too, and quoted CM on the other thread.
Crystal Mountain to be open daily through April 17, 2005.
Saw it Today on the web.

Kam - You're an animal... we still love ya tho.  ;)
bring dogs.  i'm packin' the hibachi grill, too.  ;D
Sort of related to this thread:
In March 2003 a party of snowboarders riding the lifts poached Heather when it was closed to lift users and one of them was buried (and successfully recovered w/o injury):
http://www.nwac.us/text_version/Mt_Hood_Mdws--3_07_03_Incident_report.htm
I think Jeff also mentioned this on a TTips post but to be clear we didn't purchase lift tickets and skinned from the bottom of HRM.  From what I understand, the Meadows boundary policy does not apply if you do not purchase a ticket.

Unfortunately in this low snow year Meadows happens to be at the end of 1 of the 2 roads plowed on hood that end at over 5000 feet.  I'll be interested to see if there is a different attitude there this weekend after the notice on Meadow's site.  This past...
Thanks for your message, kfox (I actually posted before I read your message). I didn't realize there was that a poaching problem from Vista. The biggest advantage I've found from that chair is it keeps the other lifts less crowded, though I've only ridden it a few times.
My understanding is that MHM's boundaries are always closed. However in Spring they do normally expand their boundaries such to allow you to hike, skin or ride a snowcat up above CE to 9000ft, right to the base of the WyEast and above Superbowl.

On TTips it was reported there was a search for a missing snowboard in Heather canyon on Saturday night. The snowboarder had been riding the lifts that day. He was found by MHM Ski Patrol at 1am, and it wasn't until 2:30 until they got him out. I...
Eric, We accesed via the Summit 6 pack lift.  We purchased a Spring Pass for $99 a week ago and it has already paid for itself. Alpine will probably operate until Memorial Day.  Alpine Meadows has a very open backcontry access policy and an enormous amount of terrain available from the ski area. We can also stay in the camper in the area parking lot. The valley access near the Sherwood chair is not normally available when the Sherwood chair is operational.

We will eventua...
I think someone, somewhere on the TAY forms has already said this but I'll reiterate it just to clarify.
The Boundary policy at Meadows is, and always has been, as is posted on their website.  In years past this policy has been enforced lightly if at all.  Most people who ducked ropes were hitting heather canyon before it was open, or heading into white river and comming out the bottom.  The patrollers just didn't put a high priority on enforcing these boundaries unless there w...
box car cornice is just out of the picture on the right side
on your way to or from the mountain stop by Wapiti wooli's in green water they sell a Crystal backcountry aerial guide. great tool for the north and south backcountry, aerial photos with names, they are $5 they will be making a new one for next season wich will include crystal lakes, and east peak boulion/cement basin area
we may be back up on sunday and monday
During our pit digging two patrollers stopped to talk to us. One of them thought we were out-of-bounds lift riders, the other made courteous but uneventful small talk, and asked us to report our pit results back to them. Again, we appreciate the patrollers well intentions.

I'm not so sure about their intentions after reading this on the Mt Hood Meadows website:

Okay, I've finally got a picture, so here it is.  This is the first line we skiied - starting from the ridge in the barely-visible gully (upper left).  That's me in the foreground.  The second line is about 100 yards to climbers left on the otherside of the big rock in the upper left corner of the photo.  Can anyone tell me which one (if any) of those rocks is Boxcar?  Still trying to get familiar with the names of things in the Crystal BC.

Well, Zap, sounds like you had another great day in Tahoe.  I was eyeing Twin Peaks when I skiied Alpine the day after you and I skiied at Sugar Bowl.  Did you access that area from the top of the lifts (Summit Chair I think) or from the road access at the base of Sherwood?  We did a hike from Summit Chair out that direction but descedned from the ridge a few hundred yards outside the ski area boundary.  You are right - huge cornices up there.  Great terrain - both "...
Last wednesday, March 30 was epic. I left the lot around 0630 and did a run under 4 and another to above chair 3. Notice the time on the video capture 1900. The lights are on in town. I don't know who is in the picture. I was the first person up that morning but talked to several others who skied later that day and thursday. I just got back from the Ridge today, I skinned to the top of chair 3 via Castle and down to midway. Pretty good turns first run. I skinned from midway to the top and the ru...
That picture captured on the web cam got me a little interested, I thought it was me but on further investigation I realized I was not up there on the 30th.
I was up there on the Mar 31 and I recall meeting another skier right about where that picture was taken and he said a couple of his friends had been up there yesterday (the 30th) and put down the tracks we were observing.
Anyway, Thurs. Mar 31 was quite a surprise, I was totally blown away with how good the conditions were.
So I...
Cool.

My guess is a ski patroller.

The riming indicates treasures ahead.
I happened upon the mission ridge cam on 3/30, and saw some guy ripping it up:

Thought it was cool, so I saved it.

Anyone you know?  Was it you?  :)
