We were skinning up from Snow Lake towards the ridge near Melakwa Pass and were suprised when you guys descended...we weren't sure where you came from, just ghostly apparitions appearing out of the fog.  Not much visability, but fun!
Great report and nice photos.
Nice trip! We skied a simillar (but different!) route last week. Way to take advantage of the rare low elevation snowpack.  Please check your PM's, I have a question for you.
The cat certainly seems to be out of the bag now about the stash of couloirs on the back of Kendal Ridge.  The shotgun as you refer to it is what we have been calling the Twins for its "twin entrances".  We skied it back in April of 2004.  There was actually a post with a photo by gregL that pretty much went below the radar back then.  Check out his post on TAY, April 10,2004 Kendal West Flank.  If you save the photo and zoom in you can see "twin" set...
look like some sick lines, the NC was good to you.  We had some great turns in the Tat-woosh.
Good job. Nice rewards come to those who are willing to do a little horizontal for their vertical, eh?
Bummer you didn't make it to the Rubies. There is some awesome skiing there.
How was the snowpack on the Rubies anyway?
I may think about a spring outing down that way.

Kam - great report.  It's hard to believe you couldn't find the largest mountain range in ID when you were in Twin Falls.  The streets in Twin Falls must be confusing.
Ahh.. The classic Kamster epic.
I like it :)
Jim,
Justin and I had a great day yoyoing some dry north facing slopes over here on the east slopes of the Cascades but I am so sorry I missed the trip.  I too have been scoping out that one for a long time but never new about the Commonwealth exit.  Always thought it would require a trip out Gold Creek.  Way to get there.  Maybe it will stay quiet.  Already saw the excellent photos at Picos birthday potluck.  No better way to spend a B-Day: great turns and tour...
Made and tested by Chinese, NOT in China . . . I like it.

That skull in picture #2 looks like something we ate in Austria!

What? Report?

Here's a movie clip.

Nice snow.  :)

Sun-baked slopes were more difficult skiing and were sluff-prone. One run and we headed for northern aspects. I suspect that the lower layers are consolidated enough to not slide, but the snow is better on north faces anyway.

Northern slopes had pretty deep powder. Not epic, but really really fun.

Jibber, two feet over we found an...
nice job.  Ya another great weekend.  It is almost too good to be true, 2 in a row.  This weeks forcast not looking so hot for a third.  Nice pics.  Your trick and some new batteries worked great for me this weekend.

When I read this post my heart sank, because I'd been talking this trip up with Pico for several days, but he couldn't go Saturday and I was afraid there would be a line like going to Muir on the uptrack on Sunday.  We decided to go anyway and it was just spectacular.   The light dusting overnight filled the tracks so there was just the hint of a track at the top, the rest was filled in.  We dug a pit and isolated a shovel column and I got a shear about 8" down after 5 firm t...
yeah, that was us in the source lake bowl...i think you and your buddy were the guys we chatted with by source lake on the way out, unless there were two parties that skied the north face of chair (by the way, congrats again!)

We were the gaggle of two skiers and three splitters.
Were you among the people we saw coming down the south face of Chair around 3:00 PM? Saw a man and woman on the skin up from Snow Lake, and a large group with a couple of split boarders in the bowl.

We skied the North face of Chair Peak after a few lift-served BC runs at Alpental; no one else was there (though lots of people ahead of us went toward Snow Lake); we could hear people climbing above us and one had left his approach skis at the base of Chair Peak.

The climb over the not...
Once again, I could see the remnants of the skier who had also skied this bowl this week, and this somehow comforted me.

That doesn't sound very comforting.
I got your tracks in one of my photos on my www site.  We were a little apprehensive about trying hucks, even though the snow was reportedly stable.  So I just dropped in via a little ramp higher up and tried to do a little cut.  We thought maybe the top of the Crooked constituted a nice little start zone.  Although maybe it would just be a small slide, coming to a rest in the flat spot immediately below...? who knows...
Hey Tony,

Damn that was a sweet day out there.  I'm glad u were back there.  Those were some nice high speed turns dow the apron!

If one wanted, the conditions were in that day to huck from the top along the ridge between the two peaks of Snoq Mtn.  You would have about a 10ft drop in to a steep slope with a nice run out.  I dropped it about 20 feet down on the shoulder and had a good side view of the drop along the ridge.  It would go nicely.

I hope...
I skied both the (Shotgun and Ribbon?) lines off the north side of Kendal last weekend.  In 2004 I first toured into this area via the easier line to the skiers left of Shotgun, then exited out the Gold Creek drainage...definately not the best exit plan due to the long flats of the Gold Creek drainage.
But last weekend, skied the Shotgun to the valley floor. Skinned up to the central couloir(Ribbon), and boot packed up the chute...which was a pain with all the new snow.  The...
nice job, and a damn good read.

thanks
Hello, Martin.  Long time.  I believe McClellan's steep faces were skiied long ago.  I did one east side one over 30 years ago, and I'm pretty sure others were well ahead of me, there, and to the north as well. Unfortunately, I can't be more specific.
Yes, "Little Tucks" is the bowl just north of Glory on the East side of the pass. Snow seemed pretty stable, however in "Unski-a-bowl" yesterday a guy was buried to his neck, which makes it seems a little less stable out there.
Nice work! Have any of your crew been on the N side chutes recently? Those looked like they were in rare form and worth the effort as well.

Thanks for the post.
Looks like a great trip.  Hopefully we will have more big snow years so that this will remain a continuous line. ;D
We saw one significant crown on a northerly aspect.  We didn't say any tracks, but I heard that there were some people skiing it.  See post by md2020
Yes, I did the Coombs Steep Skiing Camp at dougcoombs.com.

Doug and Emily do a fantastic job of organizing the camp. They divide up the clients into groups (usually 3:1) based on skill level and fitness and they do a damn good job of it. Groups change daily, to suit how each person feels and to give everyone a chance to ski with each of the guides.  All the guides are great skiers.  A few of the guides are people who make the decision of wh...
Anyone else planning this run, be sure to bring the "luck o' Lara" with you:

As Joe says, a ticket would be an unpleasant end to the day.
Here are a few pics from the trip to enjoy.  Of course, the pics never due justice to the angle of the slope-it was steep at top, we swear!

So did you do the official Coombs Steep Camp deal or was it some other arrangement? I'm curious about what goes on and how they handle the different kill levels and such.

I've prowled the website for La Grave and it really looks incredible.
Is "Little Tucks" the bowl just north of Glory Bowl.  Skied the Teton pass area 2 weeks ago for the first time.  Both Glory Bowl and the I presume "Little Tucks" were in fine shape.  We also skied a couple bowls on the the south side of the pass which were also good.  I was amazed at the potential around Teton Pass ( especially if you have 2 cars to run shuttle).  Saw some pretty funny scenes with dogs chasing their owners down some steep, deep powder....
I don't know if you can make it out in the photo, but the one looking south in my TR shows a pretty long avy crown in several spots. Not sure if that is what you meant by activity.
happy belated birthday, sag!  you're tearing it UP on the skis!!  (unless that's your splitboard in the photos, still split...)  what a star.  :)  looks like it was quite the event up there.  here's to another year of good health and lots of snow!!
Great time, folks.

Groovy video, Jerry.

yes, that is awesome hair for sure.  ;)

looks like spring has sprung!  longer days, more sun, but still lots of snow...way to get out there and enjoy it!  nice photos too.
Good woork guys way to get at it.  Did anybody notice any activity over in the tatoosh last week?
North American Ski Training Center (www.skinastc.com) also has trips to LaGrave some years.
I saw your tracks up there from the highway! :D
beverton, perfect thanks for the hook up.  Poles will be modified for this weekend.

Hey, thanks guys!  Oftpiste, you should definitely go for it.  It was incredible.  We had folks of all ages/abilities on the trip, from 17-75 years old!  But, I wouldn't suggest you wait until 75 -- just do it!  Coombs is a great guy and the most amazing skier.  It's definitely worth the trip.

lol no I have not picked up the hocky tape yet.  Trying to see if I can find some where I live first, west side.  What and where was that store again you were talking about?

Both days were a kick.  I have skied on hood for many years, ok mostly lift, but never had snow like that.  So random to run into your wives.
I found a better one Gregg!  You look great, awesome hair.

Thanks for posting Silas. Looks like these guys hit the place at the right time with great snow conditions. Some really cool pictures!
Yes, thanks Stefan for putting together such Mazama Mayhem  8)

Still good today, Wednesday the 15th . . . we went in the scenic way through Commonwealth Basin and around Guye Peak. A hard crust topped with a bit of loose corn and about 1" of fresh made for some interesting "no grip" skinning along the SW ridge of Snoqualmie, ski crampons highly advised. After the reports from the weekend, we expected bumps in the Slot, but the combination of loose slough and about 3" of ne...
This is best one I got of you Gregg.  It looks like you're trying to fly or something off that cornice...and what's that thing coming out of the top of  your head??   I'll try harder to catch you in good form next time, promise. ;D

okay, added Mt Baker since Gregg_C already mentioned it elsewhere.  I was a guest to this stash...thanks to Gregg and Mike for the great weekend and tour.

No worries. There is another 500,000 acres to ski on in the North Cascades. Plenty to go around as long as the access doesn't get any easier.

It is best not to exploit the SECRETS.
