now you've joined Dark Evil and his gang of two-plankers.  nice.

i'm hearing skeletor's cackle in the background when i read that.  yikes.  but i guess it's true.  ;)

How did Kona do?

kona did great!  she was a little cautious on the descent, and at the very end kelvin had to carry her because she was post-holing like crazy, but she did well.  i did get some videos, it's...
How did Kona do? She was looking pretty sad with her allergies last time I saw her, I bet that fresh mountain air did her some good!
nice report, Ally.  it's crazy to think last year this time you were snowboarding the backcountry.  now you've joined Dark Evil and his gang of two-plankers.  nice.
Thanks for sharing your adventure.  We had a great outing ourselves on Sunday, and talk of yet one more boarder in our group with the thought of a possible switch.
Sounds like a great trip, Ally.
Good call... you found the goods again! :-)
What a fine trip with a great story behind it.  It's a lovely area.  I can see why NCHS put their yurt in the area.  And why the hardy Gourlie family chose to live there for a time.
We were up skiing at a hut in the Selkirks a few weeks back (awesome trip, by the way!!) and a guide mentioned that they'd seen a peak of splitboarding maybe 4-5 years ago, and pretty much aren't seeing them any more as folks have tired of suffering across the flats and sidehill traverses.
Nice trip and report, Lowell.  After getting rained out of the Pickets last 4th of July weekend, we spent it instead camped atop Tamarack Peak.  It's a fine, fine place to spend the night.  We hiked past the yurt and cabins you mention - I appreciate learning the history of the area.  Thanks.

Great!  Thanks for the information and the cool video.  Heading out there next weekend, I think, so it was great to see your post.

That looks great.  I snowshoed Tallac years and years ago and thought at the time that it would be a great tour.  Looks like you had a blast!  :)
Here are some pics, finally:

Sounds fun Ally, glad you got back to your roots 8)
Jerry - nice film and tune.  Could have been an opportunity to reuse the What am I going to do with the tattoo!
Allyson - backcountry touring is a lot easier on skis than a board.  I'm glad that you are WA sliding on whatever is on your feet.
We kicked steps up it until we were blocked by rock bands.  Then we started traversing to climber's left, but the snow got crusty.  So we skied a steep little gully from a couple hundred feet above the pass.  Lots of good turns all the way to Snow Lake...
Yeah, good to meet you too Sky and to swap step kicking duties.  I've got to say that those looked liked some sweet turns -- next time I'm going to do the tour.

How was that north 'bump' of Chair above Melakwa Pass?
Good to meet you Scott.  Ski conditions were great.
Yup... I think it was the point to which you are referring... Windy Knob.

The area needs some more snow before I would head back there.
Expecting some iffy weather today, we headed to the east side to ski near Blewett Pass. We climbed to an unnamed peak just north and east of Diamond Head. ...

Thanks for the report! Most useful. I'm wondering if the peak you climbed is the one just slightly north of east from Diamond Head (5915'). It's 5960'+ elv, and known informally as "Windy Knob". Directly to the west is "Windy Gully". Point 5980 further to the east h...
Rock on, Jerman.
Great Viddy.  You da man!
This is about as close to ski porn as I've come for awhile 8)....Nice powder! Almost Every Sunday Morning you can find us skiing somewhere....enjoy..... Jerry
the wallowas rule. been going out there for a while now

CB, morgan and bill def. know how to serve it up on snow and @ the yurts!

This trip report was a hoot!  I really enjoyed reading it.
If one misses the opportunity to vege out on the Hwy 2 parking lot, there's always the Monroe-Woodinville Hwy 522 parking lot.

It's not just during ski season, either.  I've had the opportunity to cool my heels on those roads on nice summer and fall weekends as well.
I got stuck in the same traffic.  Often there is an accident that may have occurred hours before and is long cleared by the time you pass.  I have been stuck in traffic similar to this but usually once past the first light it usually spreads out.  That did not seem to be the case this time.  The light does not explain the very long periods of completely stopped traffic in my opinion.  A couple of weekends ago, there had been an accident, and the traffic behaved the same....
Thanks for the awesome directions. Skiied this line tonight from about 4,500 feet and it was great. Short approach to the objective, and then it gets right to the point. Too bad I ran our of daylight, but not a bad tour for just 15 miles from home.
Well done.

Toby and I saw your tracks as we were coming down from the upper lot. We couldn't believe our eyes...and we knew, almost for sure, who the suspects were. Fortunately, the amount of jealousy I felt did not crush me as we finally got to ski Flesh Tuxedo Chute. See you boys in Golden...
Glad you had a good time and cured one obsession.

NE Face lookin' $money$!   ;)
Here's the author destroying powder on a fabulous day 8)

Thanks for the report Jen  ;)  Nice video there Chris, I shot some  video but have limited time to edit.

 PS above photo Ron Jarvis

Upon reading your post, I think a clarification is in order. We skied from between the S. summit and the SE summit, not from between the North and South summits.
Thanks for the clarification; still looks like you had an excellent descent route, and probably with much less objective hazards than that eastern route between the N. and S. summits (that 70-deg. section was probably just out-of-sight from the vantage point at that pass; I suspected the...
Lowell: Any beta on previous descents of Baring?

As I recall, Gary Brill and a friend skied one of the SW gullies on Baring about a million years ago. (Probably the gully dropping off the other side of the saddle you reached.) I'm not aware of previous ski descents on the Barclay Lake side.
Hey All~

Twas a great day.  Ran into a few of you kind floppy frisbee flingers in the Longmeir lot in the AM.  I put together some video from sunday.

Cheers
Chris

Looks like a great powder day in the PNW.  Great photos.

Zap & Jill(in the Sierras)
It was a fantastic day with the "geezers" making 3 laps ;D.  Quite the day, beautiful scenery, great company, and perfect snow conditions :D.
I don't know what you're talking about Tony.  That must have been your imagination, or a hallucinated partner.  I spent the weekend at home keeping a close eye on the avalanche forecasts.
I just spoke with Ben Haskell, and feel that his e-mail to me (below) will provide guidance for those skiers to follow us at later dates:

"Thanks for the trip report. It was a great day on an outstanding route.

Upon reading your post, I think a clarification is in order. We skied from between the S. summit and the SE summit, not from between the North and South summits. The notch between the North and South summits is the notch that people climb to on the normal scramble rout...
:) Rad. I'm looking forward to the pictures.
:D Great report and pictures. Nice work.
Nice! We figured that you were going to hit it. Justin and I ended up on Boulder-Park having an adventure tough to forget.

Congrats!
...  Did you see and use our tracks from chair eight?  ...

Ah, so it was you who broke trail for us.  Very kind of you, sir!  We did use your tracks on part of the way in.  On the way out I wanted to compare to the recommended route of skiing down to the logging clearing that ascends to the White Salmon road.  Mistake.  Huge mistake!! It took us five hours to get to the summit from the White Salmon parking lot, and four hours to get back...
Great Job.  I had my eye on that on Saturday while coming out from our attempt on the North Face of Shuksan.  (Poor vis and snow was too deep to boot pack on the steep section of the route.  A set of verts would have done the trick).  Maybe Paul has some pictures.  Did you see and use our tracks from chair eight?  The White Salmon has always had an appeal since '94 when I descended it from a winter ascent and was kicking myself for not having skiis.
That's some quality ski porn.  Thanks for that  8)
Thanks for getting this posted, Steve.

I have turned browsing on for the folder hosting the pics.  See more at:

Thanks for the report.  I'd love to see the photos but they are not loading on my machine.  Anyone else having trouble?

Edit:  They work now.  I knew I wanted to see those pictures  ;D ;D ;D  Beautiful!
thank you all for allowing me and Brenda to invite ourselves on your tour. :) That was a fun day. Amazing snow! When I get a chance I'll link you to a few shots that I took.
Nice work guys. I love that area! Thanks for the report.
The approach was quite invigorating. The route was remarkably moderate, but the scenery was absolutely breathtaking.

Dave gets major props for breaking trail all the way up the route. My excuse is that I was carrying the rope. Those extra two pounds really did me in. ;)

Since all photos of Dave were taken in full (film!) SLR glory, I'll be the photoslut for now.

-Dave, the Middle Fork just...
We were up in the same area that day and spent one VERY long drive back in the same traffic jam on Rt. 2. That was the worst I've experienced on that road.  We were half expecting to see some big car wreck and lots of flashing lights somewhere along the way to provide some justification for the slow down but alas... it was just those darn lights in sultan! At least you and we both had the memories of some good pow to ease the pain of the traffic
Ross and I were just talking about that thing while looking at Baring on the way to Lower Town Wall yesterday.  Way to go get it.
