Found several days later, parked in Capital Hill near Cal Edwards Park - thanks SPD!
Rummaged though, took the loose change, left my annual Federal lands pass, took the 6 yr old prescription mountaineering sunglasses (now in the gutter somewhere). No damage to door lock or to ignition. Guess they didn't have bus fare.
Bought "the club" on the way home.

yes, I'm getting a club too. I had at least two mechs tell me the older outbacks and they specifically mentioned '98' were very easy to steal with a "bump key" (??).

Greg,
bump locking is a technique used by dirtbags. It sometimes can be as simple as the ink tube from a bic pen (bike locks!) to other keys that I believe are smooth. There's tons of google info on "bump locking". lifehacker.com/399735/how-to-pick-a-lock-with-a-bump-key

Funny anecdote to share regarding the club; My wife's Saturn was stolen from cap hill about ten years ago and found in Kent in a few days. Theives took loose change, ate a luna bar from the glove box, and in a funny highsign put the club back on the steering wheel. They didn't or weren't able to relock it. They turned their noses up at our music.
