This reminds me of motorcycle maintenance. When I joined a forum on maintaining my model of BMW motorcycle the consistent theme was: do it yourself if you value your motorcycle. Experience with dealer mechanics proved the truth of this.
Now I have never had a bad mount from Marmot in Bellevue or Alpine Experience in Olympia, I have had some by other shops in the area. IMHO, if you know a good, experienced tech who has good access to good workspace and tools and you know that person will be the one mounting your bindings then chances are that will be less risky than if an inexperienced you is mounting the bindings with marginal equipment. If you have new, pricey skis, the cost is low to offset the risk; generally mounts are free with ski purchase--you may have some risk there if it is a busy time of year. Lots of ifs there.
That said, with the last statement true for me, I have mounted several of my own bindings just to save my the minimum 1.5 hr drive to get to the nearest shop. I'm still considering buying some mounting drill bits and binding freedom inserts look interesting.
