it seems like those are the people complaining about trip reports?

The only actual complaining about trip reports I've seen on this thread is by the folks who are annoyed by the "conditions only" reports. I continue to say "if that's all you have time or inclination to share, please post it, as I appreciate it!"

I suspect your list will expand, with or without the aid of detailed trip reports (my bet is that it will be a bit of both). A drive to explore paired with some savvy about how to assess route safety is all it takes! Oh, and a willingness to have a day's exploration not pan out as hoped. But it is so much fun when the results are even better than expected. My own explorations have followed my comfort zone in terms of terrain - getting more willing to get into steeper terrain, risking getting cliffed out on a descent, etc. over time as I gained confidence in being able to deal with what might come.

I'm going to start writing red herring reports of stable powder glory on Friday afternoons to areas that are deep but only in the general direction that I want to go so by the time I get up on Saturday morning there is already a well established skintrack highway headed past my secret destination. Then 2 months later when the snow has turned to corn and slide cracks are waiting to consume weary TAYers I will post my detailed trip report with pictures of powder, naked babes, and angels singing and thank the crowds of lemmings for setting an easy track to follow 3/4 of the way to where I want to go...

I'm with Mike, if I go on someone's trip, I don't post a TR, but if it's my trip, and it has some value, I'll throw in a report. And I love seeing what other people are doing. If you go where lots of people go, I think it's not all that likely you'll have the place to yourself. I ski a lot, and most of the time I never see another person.

I think this wins as the most accurate observation of the thread!  :)

Just another one of those "a life well lived" milestones crossed. Now you can say "Back in the day...". I've had it happen to me several times with different sports over the decades. I just reflect and give thanks that I had the experience back in the day. Anyone up for that new back country Zorbing thing? Skin tracks, snow shoers, snowmobilers in your line? No problem.
