In the case of Greenwater, since roads are limited in the winter there are now folks firing guns while people are trying to cross country ski because it is the only access they have.

Thanks to Andrew Carey, I have researched the information from Senator Udall's proposal for gun ranges on public lands from deferred money.
I am in favor of the proposal as it creates a win win situation for what I am taking about. I will write my legislators and propose ideas that all gunfire outside of these proposed ranges are banned on public land with the exception of hunting seasons in open hunting areas. Since the states have the individual right to place these gun ranges we can legislate to have them located on public lands that meet wildlife needs and away from residences effected by noise/trash pollution.

Even 40 years ago, uncased guns on National Forest lands were banned outside of hunting seasons in some of the eastern states because of poaching and drive-by shooting of signs. How do I know? I got a ticket for an uncased gun on a NF from a VA game wardern (even though I was a wildlife researcher studying rabies in foxes). LOL I would agree with Joe that if uncased guns were banned from NF outside hunting seasons except on certified shooting ranges ... but who is going to monitor/manage that?! Right now there are areas acceptable to DNR for shooting (gravel pits) but visit one and see the shot-up t.v.s, computer monitors, printers, bottles, and foot-deep cartridge cases. On the NF bordering my house, there is not one sign left unshot!

Aside from the problem of enforcing that firearms are cased, there is also the problem that a large number of folks prefer firearms to bear spray, even though a good argument could be made that bear spray is more effective, especially if you are a poor shot with a handgun.

We had a problem with gunfire a few years ago up top of Hyak were a few guys were firing semi-automatic's and shot guns up top destroying everything they could shoot at. When the ski area built the new lifts they also made it so vehicles could no longer go up top, which is a good thing IMO. (Seems guys that shoot guns are not big fans of hiking, lol) I have very little tolerance for gun fire in the mtns when you see the trash left, the noise made and the danger to hikers....

Pot growers and Meth cookers are much more problematic than bears in WA forests--I can't remember the last time I heard of someone being injured by bears in WA ... mountain goats in the parks, yes; cougars, yes. Maybe we need goat spray and cougar spray
