he drives to work dressed in buttless leather chaps with fringes and a nazi style motorcycle helmet...

I'm ok if people make asses of themselves by wearing strange suggestive clothes and uniform bits of discredited and defeated foes but the loud pipes and stray buckshot are a issue with me. Christ sakes even the dumbest amongst us working stiffs wears hearing protection these days .

If the sound was so scary for wildlife then why the heck do I see them all the time along 410, and even running across the road in front of cars, trucks and motorcycles. The sound doesn't seem to bother them much at all from what I can see, just the actual movement of a vehicle about about to turn them into road-sandwich is the only thing I see that bothers them. Geezzzzz.....

BTW, the only way 'loud pipes could save lives' is if they were pointed forwards.... It is just a slogan and it sells a lot of after market pipes for those over priced oil drippers (lol).

Hyak: I've always just found all the noise annoying and never even thought about impacts to wildlife. But a quick interwebs search turned up a couple of links related to the whole wildlife issue. I've only skimmed some of the info and clearly more work needs to be done, but there does seem to be some reason for concern.

Joedabaker: Thanks for the silver lining. This discussion makes me happy that we don't have as much gun play along Hwy 20 and 542.

More thread drift I know but how come Mt Blanc has Chamonix and Courmayeur as it's access towns whereas Mt Rainier has the meth addicted Ashford and the chainsaw/gun paradise of Greenwater?

Because we don't have a train from Seattle to Asford or Greenwater, neither of those towns are actually at the base of the mountain, and there is not world-class skiing/alpinism directly out the back door of either as a result. Maybe if they'd allowed alpine development in the Ross Lake National Recreation Area, or if Alpental had developed to the original dreams of the first owners then we'd have something like that. As it is Ashford/Greenwater suffers the ugly side of Location, Location, Location.

But you know, the Highlander has Karaoke so that's a start.

Sorry Ashcan for drifting your thread, but it gave me a little forum to whine.

I am doing my best to take a high road and ignore DMK's intimation that I'm a newbie to the area and don't know the implications of living in the woods.
The fact is that there are 30 year residents here in Greenwater that have the same issue with gunfire as I do at 11 years of living here. Gunfire is on the upswing here and the use by the lowest IQ testers is ruining it for the rest of the ones who shoot with safety in mind- period! That is the way it works in nearly every activity that is fun and dangerous.
My God we have gun users that are out in the snow, rain. In the case of Greenwater, since roads are limited in the winter there are now folks firing guns while people are trying to cross country ski because it is the only access they have.

Thanks to Andrew Carey, I have researched the information from Senator Udall's proposal for gun ranges on public lands from deferred money.
I am in favor of the proposal as it creates a win win situation for what I am taking about. I will write my legislators and propose ideas that all gunfire outside of these proposed ranges are banned on public land with the exception of hunting seasons in open hunting areas. Since the states have the individual right to place these gun ranges we can legislate to have them located on public lands that meet wildlife needs and away from residences effected by noise/trash pollution.
What we have here in my opinion is user conflict safety, noise pollution with trash and wildlife issues. Times have changed, the days of my Grandfathers are different with the expanding population and recreational interests time to be proactive. The fact that I should fear for my safety from guns diminishes my constitutional rights of freedom in this country.
With all the recent gunfire related deaths in the cities, public sentiment is most likely on the anti-gun side so timing is right to get some proactive action done to help promote the safety issue.
