FWIW, I'm with Robie; neither his Suzuki or my BMW bike reach 70 db (the EPA limit) or are nearly as noisy as a diesel PU. Listen to those Honda Gold Wings with their massive 6 cylinder engines--what, you can't hear them at all? That's right.
The loud pipes, as pointed out in the NPR piece, are results of after-market modifications, many, if not most, of which are illegal under EPA regs. And as Robie pointed out are being outlawed by lots of biking clubs.
The biggest offenders of course are Hardly David's son and other cruiser riders who refit their bikes with loud pipes because "loud pipes save lives" and "they make me giggle when I leave for work early and wake up everyone in the neighborhood" (and as a VP of HD said "we build motorcycles for middle-age accountants who want to dress up like outlaws and drive big loud bikes into small towns to scare the locals", who of course either laugh or curse). I recall one BMW rider being ridiculed on a forum because he said all his HD friends "dress up like pirates to drive to the tavern" and "could he do it too" LOL. Some sport-bikers are also buying some extra loud tuned exhausts (but for a different, but still loud, sound). The kids in my neighborhood simply poke nail holes in their dirt-bike mufflers and/or take the sound insulation out of the muffler. This is "all good" because America is home of the free and the land of the immature. Naturally the snowmobilers racing in the ditches on Skate Creek Road deign nice quiet 4 strokes for screaming 2 strokes that can be heard literally 4 miles away "look at me! look at me! look mommy, no hands!".
As far as the sound of freedom goes (unrestrained high-power pistol and rifle reports), Sen. Udall just introduced a bill to transfer Pittman-Robertson revenues from wildlife conservation to building rifle ranges on public lands.

Harley owners are similar to your corvette owners of the late 80’s early 90’s, if you’ve got the money you can be cool no matter what you do in your day to day life. The riders I see riding in the park and over 410 are mostly the same guys you call when your computer isn’t working or ones that work in a high stress job. The louder the pipes the more attention they get when they pull up to the bar, this way they don’t have to force the conversion of how cool they are for riding a Harley. Don’t get me wrong I love motorcycles; leaning into a corner on some nice blacktop is very close to making turns on snow. All of the noise issues wouldn’t be a problem if they just enforce the noise restrictions that are already in place. I remember a few years ago they did something about all the loud bikes driving the sea to sky hwy, pretty sure they got it handled.
As far as the guns go in Greenwater, I can’t remember a time when there wasn’t shooting going on in the woods there or at least in the last 30+ years. Only if your real estate agent would have warned you that people like to shoot guns in the woods around there. It’s like people moving to Washington from California because of our beautiful trees, only to cut them down to make it more like California. I can’t say I like hiking around people shooting guns, but I wouldn’t expect them to stop shooting just because I moved into an area where shooting takes place. Shotgun shot doesn’t travel that far, if it’s hitting roofs they are shooting very close to you 100-200 yards.
We don’t need more rules; we just need the ones that are in place to be enforced.

My business partner bought himself a Harley and on nice days he drives to work dressed in buttless leather chaps with fringes and a nazi style motorcycle helmet... cracks me up every time and I make fun of him without mercy.
Mind you I was once driving I5 when Robie passed on his bike and I thought I had suddenly been transported back to the Mid 20th Century. He was keeping it real with some chic retro goggles.

I resent that statement: we not only have the meth population but we also have the chainsaw/gun paradise ... in spades!

More thread drift I know but how come Mt Blanc has Chamonix and Courmayeur as it's access towns whereas Mt Rainier has the meth addicted Ashford and the chainsaw/gun paradise of Greenwater?

admin may shut this down soon, so I'll get this in before it does
