GoreTex is horrid. I don't use it anymore, but I run hot and sweat a lot, so it's really not appealing. I think after you've got the basic layers, then a softshell like the Patagonia Guide is great. If you need rain protection, just wear a rain jacket. I've spent many a day in a down jacket with a raincoat on the outside.

I do this often too - carry either a full or vest puffy in my pack, and use it as necessary under a hardshell

I like my Mammut Ultimate jacket (comes with and w/o hood; hood might work under a helmet but not so sure about over) and Mammut Castor pants (which have zipper vents for a bit of heat control).

ahem... no mention of the purple d***o?

I am currently rocking this jacket from Norrona. Very long and athletic fit.
Perfect for skinning.
I love it.
Plus it gives me that Scandinavian Steeze that is so sought after ! ;D

I haven't worn my Norrona purple one-piece yet, I'm waiting for a real powder day or the first day on my sled!

BTW I rarely wear Gore-tex ( or Event) jackets while skiing anymore.Most modern softshells ( I prefer the ones with hoods) will resist all but the wettest weather and heavy snowfall plus you don't get so damp from condensation when skiing hard.

To dry them out a bit , just put your puffy over them on the chair/gondola or transition and it draws the moisture out.
I agree with one of the previous posters..windblocker softshells= not so good.
Hardshells= so first decade 21st century.
Softshells= second decade!

So what is the softshell material that will keep me dry for hours here in PNW?

I am interested to try it.

So far, the expensive Power Shield, which is used in top-shelf softshells (say it fast: top-shelf softshell, lol) from Arcteryx, Norrona, Patagonia, Stoic, Marmot, 66 North, Eider has not kept me as dry as I want. Ibex softshel material (like Pingo and Vim, not sure what they call it, maybe climawool) is not where it's at (if I want to stay dry) either.

Cheers
Ivo
