Looks cool, but I looked closely and I do not see how this actually functioned as a rope tow. I am sure many people would like to at least hear a description that made sense of it.Since you mentioned portable rope tows, here's one I put together a couple winters ago when the snow stuck around the lowlands for weeks. Lot's of fun even on a small hill when it's all yours.

The link shows what I believe is the Debbie's Gold chairlift from Alpental being erected at Turner Mountain (Libby, Montana) in 2001. There are the black towers and the green chairs, no stickers or numbers. What a sec...the chairs were RED I think. Hmmmmmmmmmm, maybe they repainted them?
It sure LOOKS like the old Debbie's.
Here is a reference to the NEW (2001) chair at Turners being from Washington State.
Today, Turner Ski Area is as popular as ever. Still volunteer run and operated, Kootenai Winter Sports has begun to implement their plans to upgrade the ski area. With a grant of $92,000 and a $128,000 loan guarantee from the Libby Area Development Company, the organization purchased a chair lift in 1999 from ski areas in Washington state. The old T-bar was taken down in June, 2001 and volunteers spent the summer preparing the mountain for the new 120-chair lift. Workers refurbished the lift, scraped and painted the 31 lift towers, and started the work on the mountain to install the towers.
It is strange because they say from ski areas! I believe this is because they also got the Bonanza Chairlift from (Central) and put the two chairs together to make one long lift.
Author's note:
I have spent a significant portion of my life (freezing) sitting on the old Debbie's Gold Chairlift at Alpental!

The technical details aren't terribly technical. The tractor is at the top. The rope is wrapped twice around the left rear rim. The extra rope you see tying off the right tire of the tractor served to keep the right wheel from turning, forcing the power to the left rim. The rope is 1/2 inch 3 strand yellow poly spliced to form a continuous loop. The bottom "terminal" was a wheel barrow tipped upside down with a rim only, no tire. The wheel barrow was lashed to a fence post, and the tractor was attached to a tree with a come along to tension the rope. That's about it. Here's a picture of the bottom "terminal"

I think the chairs on Big Chief came from the old Thunderbird lift at Snoqualmie.
The chair seats and maybe the backs used to be made out of painted wood and were slippery as hell if there was any freezing mist.

I thought Alpental's old Chair 1 went to Loup Loup?
