FYI, I'll be locking this thread and letting it sink off the front page on Sunday night, maybe Monday morning -- sooner if it stays as ugly as it is now.
This is, in my opinion, a pretty good example of why we try to be respectful and avoid personal attacks. It's not that it makes TAY any better or worse than TGR or any other site, but there are many people who value that respect, including myself. I've already explained my mindset with moderation and it will continue to develop going forward.
If someone wants to continue this discussion, feel free to create a new post, but it will not be a "moderation-free" zone like this one has been.

Jeez, couldn't there have been a few posts between mine and Marcus'?
Mia culpa, of course, but I offer two excuses - it sounded like a good idea at 3AM, and second, it's a once in a lifetime chance..
might be something relevant in there, hell, I don't know..

Props to Marcus for taking on this huge task of maintaining the "sandbox" so that all the kids can have a place to play. Like all sandboxes, it is a big job removing the neighborhood cat poop, as responsible kiddies we ought not to poop in our own sandbox, for our own sake as well as for the person who has been so kind as to maintain our play area.
A suggestion, if I may, another board I used to frequent, crossfit puts closed/dumb posts in a place called "Pukie's Bucket" and has another area called "Sense and non-sense" for totally off topic junk. Might be worth considering implimenting as a sort of "cat box" for unregulated "discussion".
Just a thought.

In reply to Charles' offer of a moderator's job, Scotsman replied:
Chris, you started your argument by saying that moderating is acceptable as long as it is even-handed. That's a very reasonable point. I generally feel that the TAY moderators are fair, but maybe you have seen stuff I have missed. (I don't read TAY as thoroughly as you do.)
But after making a very reasonable point to begin with, it seems to me that you've gone off the rails. This thread has turned into a rant. You've said that you don't have the skill required to be a moderator. But this hasn't stopped you from criticizing them (and others) pretty severely. If you don't have the skill to be a moderator, why should we listen to you when you criticize them?
I agree with Marcus that this thread is a good example of why the TAY guidelines are valuable. Thinking back to the times when I've been moderated, I was thankful to the moderator for saving me from myself.
No , thank you Charles. For all the reasons I have mentioned before, its not the time invoved, or the effort, or the thanklessness of the job, I prefer to remain independent and do not have the skill required. ( and I'm not being sarcastic for once)

Well, I guess I was one of those precious, self-congratulating PC hypcrites who spoke right up on the "passing the torch" thread who made you feel so sick, Scotty. I guess I should have focused my energy there on trashing whatever bugs me about the site rather than thanking Charles for his years of service to the community, and Marcus for being willing to deal with, well, things like this thread. My mother obviously raised me the wrong way...
