I was not trying to pick a fight, sorry if that's the impression any of you got.
In regards to Gore profiting from global warming, I was referring to his company that sells carbon credits. He started it shortly before releasing his movie, just a thought.
Yes Pat Roberts is a schmuck.

Peace

Gore's investments in that area remind me of Bill Gates' investments in biotech (or Buffet investing in a railroad) - someone putting their money where their passion is.  There were certainly plenty of scientists sounding the alarm long before Gore made his investments. So to say that this is only an issue because of folks like him who have invested in carbon programs or green energy or whatever is pure revision of the actualy history. But maybe his investement really is pure cynical greed on his part...

Of coarse its getting warmer, but to say WE caused it in a hundred years or so is preposterous.

Where to start, where to start.

CO2 levels in the atmpsphere are going up dramatically.   We less than 300 ppb in 1900, now 387 ppb and going up at a steep curve.  There is no question that burning fuels (and other activities like land clearing) have caused this.  There is no other explanation for the actual observed increase in CO2 concentration, and actual measurements of actual emissions are a pretty good match to the observed concentrations.

CO2 levels correlate with historical climate.  More CO2, higher temperatures.

The bad news is not the current concentration, but the steep increase.

Awareness of an issue like this will ebb and flow.  It will be back.

Regarding the profit motive, I think ExxonMobil, a leading climate change denier, made a little more money than Al Gore last year.  Only 36.9 billion more money last quarter than Al did.

Part of the problem is that global warming skeptics (James Imhofe, George Will and others) have been making a big deal about the fact that the temperatures haven't been rising much the past few years. Cliff Mass had an interesting post about this on his blog a few months ago:

cliffmass.blogspot.com/2009/08/global-wa...tion-ii-and-san.html

Here's the crux of his post:

Since the late 1990s, temperatures, albeit high, have shown little trend. This is what has some people concerned. But its worst that that they say. Some global warming computer simulations show warming during that period (see figure). Now we are really in trouble. Some of the models are failing too! Fox News was right! Mayor Nickels was wrong!

Not so fast. It turns out that global warming IS a real issue and the above doesn't prove anything really. The truth is that we have a signal to noise issue. The signal is the warming due to greenhouse gases. From our computer models and theory, we know that human-induced warming was quite small until recently (last few decades). And our models and theory indicate it will rapidly increase during this century. But there is also what I will call "noise"--natural variability in the atmosphere that obscures the global warming signal.

[...]

During the past several years, global warming has undoubtedly lessened due to a combination of natural variability and a slight weakening of solar radiation, but you can bet that this will turn around very soon. (e.g., El Nino's bring warming and we are now switching into one). The fact that warming has paused for a few years really doesn't mean anything and doesn't disprove anything.

This is only my opinion but I think Global warming is happening, is being accelerated by human activity and is irreversible.

We can talk about green power, change lightbulbs, recycle coffee grounds and rant against oil companies AND ignore the basic problem which will never be solved...... human population growth.
There's too many of us all wanting the same thing and multiplying like a virus.
Population growth will soon become exponential.

Barring a huge decrease in human population from some calamity( it's happened before... dinosoars) then the steps we do to reduce our energy consumption and green up may slow the tide a bit but will be eventually overtaken by the effects of an ever growing population.

As I told Stewie, "We've F***ed it up, its going to be your generations problem..I'm going skiing"

Nihilistic and pessimistic maybe, but it is what it is. Adapt, we're good at that!
