Ok, so most manufactures make a heavier softshell pant (fuzzy lined) and a lighter pant. I tend to like the heavier for mid winter and the lighter for spring summer. Find a brand that tends to fit you well. Check out their offering and then order it from someone. Most people end up buying black pants so retailers don't often carry the lighter colors. If you are all and thin and moving pretty fast I would suggest the Arcteryx Gamma AR, check it out. Good luck.

A completely different approach which makes an unfortunately unique fashion statement is pair of light long underwear (e.g. REI MTS or similar) ideally in grey or perhaps white, with a pair of nylon Columbia cargo shorts over them, and a pair of termigators to keep snow out of the boots. If the long underwear is appropriately stretchy (which the old REI MTS is), you can fold up the legs when you're really baking and now you're essentially wearing something like bike shorts. With a pair of light goretex pants in the pack, you're also ready for wind/weather, and the combo is no heavier than the Schoeller pants I've checked out. The shorts have plenty of pocket space even for a hat, light gloves, and whatever other little stuff you want handy. And it's a pretty cheap combo, assuming you already own the goretex pants. Plus there's no way to put a value on providing endless humor for your friends.
I like my Schoeller Castor pants in cooler weather but I roasted trying them last April in warmer weather, even despite their nifty vent side zips - that damn black thing again. Makes me tempted to try losing the fashion statement for some of the tan pants noted above...

As another poster suggested you might check out the Marmot Scree pants. I just got a pair to replace my 10 year old Black Diamond Alpine pants that were made of Schoeller Dynamic. The Marmot material is almost identical to the Schoeller and perhaps a touch lighter. They also offer it in a light grey. Easily fit over AT boot cuffs but they don't have a scuff guard like my BD pants had. I used my BD pants on almost all my trips excluding super hot summer backpacking and they offered lots of breathability and stretch and I never felt they we're too hot even though they were the black color. The light grey color would have been even better.

Hey, Jim your post made me smile. Not so very long ago, your ski garb was de rigueur for any skiier worth their salt. Back before anyone had heard of Schoeller and a fat ski had a 70 cm waist.
