the swashbuckling cowboy method of slapping skins on extra gear loops was so cool too, guess I've learned my lesson.
Thanks for a great quick trip! Big party of pass powder pilgrims, especially after first light.

Bond of 4-6" of fluffy new to edgeable old was quite good, ran only as fluffy sluff. Ski quality radically exceeded what one would expect from 33-degree air temperature.

Skied in a thick predawn cloud, clearing over time. Beautiful sunshine on the drive back to the city.

Looking through photos, it looks like Erik's skin departed his pack hipbelt at about mi...
Looks like a nice place especially through YOUR camera ;) Thanks for posting!
You're killing me!  Too much pow and too much work to escape.
I must quote Pooh:

"Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude."

Thanks for the TRs, Silas. Keep em coming.
Está bien.  Hacer tus propias cosas
Thanks for the detail John. It's been a long time since I've frequented that road - before trying Red a few years ago, before that it had been over a decade and we mostly did Hex on lighter gear. My memory may be off, but back then I thought we needed the sno-park pass even for the Newport Creek pullout which was always a bit plowed out. Perhaps the latest is a bit of "back to the future?"
Many good pics, those night shots are amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the great report, I love the first night ambient lite shot! Way to play the weather too.
Thanks for the info guys. While my question was based on misinterpretation of Lowells post it's clearly a topic of interest and I appreciate the update.
I was up there pretty early and didn't see any staff around.  I do have a pass there and brought it with me just in case - would be nice to have some clarity about the policy.
Hey guys,
I remembered back to this thread and thought it might be of interest:

Read the second half of Gib's post where he speaks to the non-Alpy areas.
Im lead to believe he has a pretty good understanding of the Pass's uphill policies, and they don't seem to be in conflict with responsible uphill travel at any time.
Maybe he'd be willing to hold a meeting with op...
Thanks, I thought that you were there when they were closed and got worried.

Thanks for the old link...I'll edit that.  Officially, prior to Jan 1 2015 the parallel parking along the county road was always free and no snowpark permit required....
Sorry to offend Chamois and maybe others.  Glad for those who understand and appreciate my desire to share conditions I found (and you might find in the same general region) without losing ski partners who prefer only to take info from TAY and not give even such minimal data.  As the joker said, you can't please everyone.  It ain't what you ski, it's who you enjoy it with IMHO.  Rant on ......?
Wow you climbed and skied Pilot Peak!  Well done.  I once worked as a bartender in a casino in Wendover during the off season in Utah and looked up at that mighty geographical high point above the salt flats and wondered what it would look like in a winter coat.

Lowell mentioned getting run off by the West staff when he tried to skin there a few weeks back. Did you have any contact with any workers? I'm thinking of taking the dog up there for a few laps in the sun tomorrow.

West wasn't open today, so I wouldn't expect any problems skinning there. They'll be closed again tomorrow until 4pm, when...
Maybe a couple of feet up top.  Didn't hit anything but some sagebrush on the way down.
Nice job everybody!

That looks like a blast. Kenji and I were admiring it from Rock last week. I love the second pic with the huge Ponderosa Pine, my favorite tree!
Good work Jtrue! I miss the Great Basin so much! Seems like they are getting enough snow for some skiing this winter so far. Fantastic!

Damn!  I thought I was the first!

Actually my post may be misleading - 15 degrees was the temperature not the slope angle (i've been spending too much time in the weather chat room)  The north facing slopes are nice and steep and right in the Avy ballpark 25-35, but you would have to get some crazy big air to get electrocuted  :D
I guess you cruised our old track.. sorry it was so steep, but we were on a quick mission.  yeah that thing got super loaded and that's why we avoided it..  sounds like you had a similar experience.  The trees back to cold creek are very worthy though!

I too have skied that venerable place and the photo of the power line steeps with not only the danger of huge avalanches but electrocution, define what is at the heart of EXTREME terrain.  Glad you could share that, hang loose, get some.

Thanks for the Ojai Board interpretation.  Personally - if I'm going to go thru the trouble of posting I'd make it a bit more useful.  If I want to hide the goods - don't post.  It seems silly.  IMO.   Cheers
Well, I very much appreciate these sorts of trip reports. "Very nice fresh snow from 1700' up!  4-12" depending on altitude and aspect.&qu...
Went up there today. The snow is still great. We found some instability about 25-30 cm down. Storm snow on a density change. We found what seemed like some buried surface hoar at this interface in the clear cuts. It wasn't very sensitive I think due to the uncohesive nature of the storm snow. We got a small slab to release on a steep slope that ran for a ways, so we skied down the ridge near our up track rather than try the steeper slopes.

However, don't forget your s...
Thanks all, definitely fun to get out and explore, not knowing exactly what the day will bring is a huge part of it for me.  Will be trying to get out of the pen this winter to explore some other hidden gems.

I don't get the point of these vague arm-waving reports.  I was out, went skiing.  Great.

I get what your saying, but there really is some key useful info here.  Plus what is not said, like, "breakable crust below xxx, tree bombs, etc..."

It's a useful conditions report for a region, and it prevents the unimaginative lurker hordes from laying siege to it the next day  :).

two-fer!

Thanks Silas!

Stop wondering, start skinning. Thanks for posting!
What a great trip, I sure know what you mean, with all kind of interesting objectives in your back yard! It sure is fun to go some place exotic, and Pilot Peak sure fits that bill! As I'm sure you know the Great Basin is full of those little gems. Thanks for the great post.
Bandera- Defiance Adventure zone no doubt.
Absolutely love it!  N/NE aspects???  Intriguing...such a big isolated mtn with such minor wind effect.
Makes me wanna buy the tiny house trailer and set off.
Are the home hills Wasatch, then?
Post more esoteric adventures, please.

Nice Jason! Gotta get you out to the PNW this spring.

Agreed, your last trip looked awesome.  Let's work on some dates!

Pretty sure he's a  Mad Hatter.  And if you go far enough west from the Pass, you're already there.  Now,  I'm late, I'm late. For a very important ski date...

I fixed it for you, Charlie
I do know that he was in a FAT zone !
Pretty sure he's at Mad River Glen. Base elevation is 1600', and if you go far enough west from the Pass, you're there.
Nice work ErikT! That's been on my list for a while
