Here's some more photo's... still trying to figure this out, sorry.
i can only help you with where to not bring the dog. glad chmn. silas steered you and your lovely fido to a safe place.
Keeps life interesting in a good way, IMO!
We found some very nice longer untracked open slopes today with soft dry boot top powder, and a little mostly inconsequential crust that still allowed sweet turns. Exceeded expectations! Also found turnable schmoo on lower open south slope. Super steep with lots of extra kick turns seems to be the new uptrack style. But it was super easy to set new gentler track in the settled snow.
Thanks Tom.  So happy to meet in my office, not yours!  Yikes.  Crazy people attract each other I guess and that goes for you Mr Morrow as well.
sorry, I never figured out how to post more than 3 pics...

from the view on top, Mt Crested Butte (the ski resort) is off to the left (east).  Whetstone is off to the right/south.  Whetstone is a beautiful and complex mountain with bowls and steep faces on most aspects.  All are laccoliths formed about 30M years ago.

Crested Butte is visible in the center.  Population is about 2K in the upper valley, and our nearest 'large' town is Gunnison, pop 6K.  Lots of BC to...
wow nice photos of a great trip!
After all.  He's in a chair...and he's a man...he must be a chairman!
After driving home I need to amend my report. The heavy snow on the 30 degree slope I skied was not going to slide. In did notice that every single steep road it was sliding, snowballing and pinwheeling. Probably a good weekend to stay off steeps in that area.
It was indeed but I needed to shed some holiday weight. The rain shadow is pretty evident up there. I will get the pics off this phone sometime later in the weekend.
Nice Ron!
That's a long slog to reach the alpine environs.

Congratulations!

Gary

Based on Facebook posts I've been seeing, it appears that Peter Avolio, Dave Jordan and Trevor Kostanich skied Mt Si today from the top of the Haystack. I'm gonna guess this doesn't get done very often.  ;)

Yup - http://snovalleystar.com/2016/01/07/local-trio-makes-landmark-ski-descent-from-mount-si-summit . Way cool :)

I will agree with the tree bombs having there way on the slopes. The snow was still indeed fun to ride. We even found a little north facing strech of powder on kendall to feed the monkey. A peaceful and quiet, windless day. Nobody out. Crust seemed to be setting up on a lot of aspects and rain in the hyak lot in the evening.

Thanks Jtack.  Looks like some more snow for the lowlands this weekend!  I've been eye-balling Nestor Peak...
Way to go, seems like this year will be the year to get those great lines that have been taunting us. I have several in my back yard that need skiing, thanks for reminder.
Hey Jerry, yeah I didn't want to ask our new friend to wait for us to converse since he was dropping us off at Obstruction Point Rd. Glad you found the goods on the N facing slopes!
Thanks folks!

Really stretching my karma account here, but if anyone is headed up to pass on Friday and can bring back to Seattle metro area, I'll pay your gas and provide beer :) can't get up there before wknd plans take me a different direction, and hoping to be able to return purchased replacement skins...
Cool report, excellent photos. I agree that this is the place!
Pics or it didn't happen! :D

I don't post my private powder stash locations mostly so I don't have to deal with people there (cheers) - the internet is extremely powerful at uninternded consequences, especially if your spray has super color powder shots and words like "epic" and "untracked".  But I do like the fun stories of skiing so I keep posting about some of those powder days.  With innocuous names like "Front Range, Colorado."  Those stashed still do not have cars...
Kenji,
Jason and I looked at the north slope but determined that we had neither the daylight or energy to skin back up.  We slid east from the summit to ski one of the steeper lines down to Rock Lake, but lost our nerve when we couldn't see over a roller.  So back to the top and one run down to the lake right under where we skinned up to the ridge.  Nice turns, but not long enough.  We looked back to our attempted line and it would have gone!

Rad photos a...

After triggering a 200 foot long, 12" storm slab underneath the Crystal gondola on Monday morning, I went out treading lightly for two solo laps on hyak. Boot deep pow. Upside down snow up top transitioned to smooth, creamy turns 1/3 of the way down. Warmer temps were appreciated after...
I thought I saw you pass Jenn and I in the parking lot ...  nice report ... Jerry
Headed up  Pocket Creek on Sunday as well. Snow was amazingly good considering the recent wind activity. Although below the rocky knob on the top we remote triggered this slab. About 50'x50' and about 15 cm deep. No signs of instability lower down off the ridge and this one didn't run anywhere due to the shallow slope angle, but a reminder that pockets can exist even on relatively stable days.
Ok no more replies here unless you have my skin - I keep getting excited each time I get the notification email :)
Rando bro-down
It seems Stacker Butte becomes skiable every 5 years or so.  I had a good year to try about 10 years ago but couldn't find the way up without taking the risk of pissing off a landowner.  Where exactly do you start up and what are the limits of wandering around after leaving the road?  Where to park?
doesn't count as dawn patrol if you don't vimeo it.

By mid afternoon the goods  had thickened up quite a bit but still fun.
Nice job in getting some mid-week early morning laps! Maybe now you have a good excuse to buy some skins that can attach to both ends of your skis!

Hell Gary,
I wonder if you wouldn't mind answering this question, Is the waterhole A-Frame gone for good?
Thanks,
john

At this point ONP does not have any plans to replace the hut that I am aware of. It was originally put in place by an avid group of Hurricane Ridge skiers. The justification for removing it in 2012 was " The structure...

Thank you everybody for your kind comments! This traverse really has high reward for not being very strenuous or technically difficult.

We posted a report on NWHikers with more photos and descriptions that some of you may find useful: http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1039773#1039773

We ran into some wonderful people on our trip, starting with "Abert", of course.

If you can't find anybody to give you a ride, you can contact Willie Ne...
Great report and photos! My wife and I have also done this traverse, the views in all directions are outstanding. Glad the shuttle worked out.
the swashbuckling cowboy method of slapping skins on extra gear loops was so cool too, guess I've learned my lesson.
Thanks for a great quick trip! Big party of pass powder pilgrims, especially after first light.

Bond of 4-6" of fluffy new to edgeable old was quite good, ran only as fluffy sluff. Ski quality radically exceeded what one would expect from 33-degree air temperature.

Skied in a thick predawn cloud, clearing over time. Beautiful sunshine on the drive back to the city.

Looking through photos, it looks like Erik's skin departed his pack hipbelt at about mi...
Looks like a nice place especially through YOUR camera ;) Thanks for posting!
You're killing me!  Too much pow and too much work to escape.
I must quote Pooh:

"Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude."

Thanks for the TRs, Silas. Keep em coming.
Está bien.  Hacer tus propias cosas
Thanks for the detail John. It's been a long time since I've frequented that road - before trying Red a few years ago, before that it had been over a decade and we mostly did Hex on lighter gear. My memory may be off, but back then I thought we needed the sno-park pass even for the Newport Creek pullout which was always a bit plowed out. Perhaps the latest is a bit of "back to the future?"
Many good pics, those night shots are amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the great report, I love the first night ambient lite shot! Way to play the weather too.
Thanks for the info guys. While my question was based on misinterpretation of Lowells post it's clearly a topic of interest and I appreciate the update.
I was up there pretty early and didn't see any staff around.  I do have a pass there and brought it with me just in case - would be nice to have some clarity about the policy.
Hey guys,
I remembered back to this thread and thought it might be of interest:

Read the second half of Gib's post where he speaks to the non-Alpy areas.
Im lead to believe he has a pretty good understanding of the Pass's uphill policies, and they don't seem to be in conflict with responsible uphill travel at any time.
Maybe he'd be willing to hold a meeting with op...
Thanks, I thought that you were there when they were closed and got worried.
