That looks ten times better than installing tyvek! Way to go.

It takes a surprising amount of effort to get that line.
a little bit of effort to get out of it too! we had a ripping traverse to get back over to the other side of the ridge
Given the forecast this was the morning to get it. Jealous.
North aspects near granite were pretty good till we left around 3. Little snow on top of rain crust below 4500 ft. 8-10 inches at 5600
Yes, early on was key today although the N facing stuff should still be OK I would imagine. We got up to around 5800' on chair but it was a whiteout in the bowl just as we turned around. Open slopes were also key rather than trees which were much thinner but still a very easy approach and exit from to and from source lk today.
Nice running into you up there. Snow was surprisingly good! Left at noon after it warmed up.
Well done! It takes a surprising amount of effort to get that line. Seems so close when viewed from the campground.
If I ever become a "rules are rules" person vs. someone who uses common sense based on circumstance, someone please kill me.
If I ever take a taxpayer-funded job and am a dick to visitors who pay my salary and patronize the very place that makes my employment a reality, also please murder me immediately.

Excellent corn harvest! I have cousins in Medford, and that sweet mountain is the nicest view looking east. Hope spring stays relatively cool; maybe I'll catch up with you in May!!!
Best shot probably here:

You know this isn't cascade climbers though, eh? That thing looks scary.

thanks for the report. any snaps of dragontail NF?
Not a whole lot more to add to the conditions report, actually. Here is some eye candy:

Nice work. I've done several one day hike/runs thru but never a ski. Pretty committing. I've always wondered about Avalanche debris in those steep chutes coming off Wedge Mountain/Ridge. So many broken/transported trees... The basin must have been gorgeous. Can't wait to see the pictures.
Sounds like you did not go into 4 mile lake and approach from the east? Any idea if that road is open to the lake yet?
Stick it to the MAN!!
Burn the ticket and live the rest of your life on the lamb.
If the Prick Rangers can get away with doing this to you then they might think that they can do it to ME!

It's not a moving violation and it's federal, so none of the usual tricks will work. If you contest it and show up in person, they will probably reduce it, but you'll still pay a portion, because you have no viable defense (you were admittedly late, right?). Not saying it's a good policy, but rules is rules. They've been real D I C K S about this for the last few years, so I'm surprised it's getting so much attention on this thread.
Like they own the place. We are just trespassers, and a revenue source.
Take them to court.
Explain the circumstances.
Explain how you saved them money by doing a self rescue.
If you called for rangers to come rescue you would you have been issued a ticket too?
Absolutely ridiculous.
Just be very nice and don't go off on the danger ranger treating you like were a member of ISIS.
Good luck

Shit dude, that's a bad way to end the day. I guess you're one of the first to be fined for that ....
she should be buying you chains and installing them herself before wasting time on tickets.
and here I thought PR was going a bit better at the Park. Ranger needs some education that her primary job is not in fact law enforcement - it's public service.
No way! There can't be anyone else out there that falls down more than me!
Federal Courthouse in Tacoma. They quickly cut the ticket in half and charged me a minor court fee but still...ended up being about $65 and a half day away from work. Look up fighting federal tickets online....tons of horror stories. They kinda got ya by the short n curlys.
Man, that sucks. So you can't contest it via mail? Where did you have to physically go to fight it? I'm hoping I don't have to drive out to Ashford. I actually have a lawyer I'll use for this but I doubt he'll drive out that far.
We had a slab break in that exact same spot last year.
As for the ticket, I had a female ranger give me the 3rd degree for doing 40mph in a 35mph zone, calling for 2 backup vehicles and interrogating me for 45 mins. My asking pointed questions about the situation didn't help, im guessing. Was a real tough one to fight in court, as you have to be at your appointed date, in person. Really frustrating situation...i feel your pain. Guess they have nothing bett...

Nicely done, glad to hear there is still good snow in the shade.
We dropped in a little earlier with the same snow down low, today looked like a better day! Did you see the slab that pulled out of the center chute?
Were you able to drive to the lower trailhead? I want to go there this weekend and was wondering how clear, or not, the road is.

What lines were those? Its a big effort to go all the way across the lake.
First one was Black Hole, up Waterfalls Canyon, I believe it's only 3 miles one way vs close to 6 to hit Moran. Total mileage that day was 15 or so plus ~5k of vert. Second line was Apocalypse, no lake crossing involved, but a good amount of mileage and also ~5k of vert...
I wonder if those are the same bright pink (?) skis that I borrowed to ski Pisco back in 2008? Enjoy the Cordillera Blanca--it's an amazing place, even though the minibuses were terrifying.
We did park in that little shoulder this time. I've parked at the entrance to the service road just West of the shed, as well as the wider shoulder further near the Nordic center. A mtn guide looking guy once told us he always parks on that shoulder as if he had talked to an official. I feel ok as long as there is no obvious sign...
Lovely write up & thanks for the map and the light bulbs.
Phil, I got a chuckle from your your Watt-splitting.
great pics!
just curious... did you park just to the west of the train tunnel vent bldg on the narrow little chunk of shoulder that doesn't have 'no parking' signs? I parked there earlier this winter (another car was already there) for an Arrowhead ski and didn't have any problems, but then I heard about someone getting towed there a few weeks later.
Guess its safe to assume one should never park there if its likely plows will be running that day...

i hate when you give away sekrit spots like this!! keep it on the DL
Ha, we almost crossed paths. I was riding the slopes west of lake Valhalla, and watched you guys climbing the burg. The flyovers were wild!
Thanks, that does look like nice access. It goes on the list. If I don't manage to make spring turns up there I will try to at least check it out in the summer for some scrambling around.
Ron - Check out Lake of the Angels. That always struck me as an awesome place to head up to for spring turns. It is basically the next trail head up the road. There is a great overland high traverse back to Lena.
nice - nothing like a good soaking on the way out of a cascadian ski day.
