Thank you for sharing the details of your accident and its aftermath.  Jill and I understand that unplanned events definitely modify your life.   I remember the time we met on our Fairy Meadows Hut trip, March 22-29, 2003.

Don, you and I shot some videos and you created a wonderful DVD, ‘Fairies in the midst’.  It was a fantastic trip with the opportunity to meet and ski with new ski friends.  I remember a few folks asking me when I would return to Fairy Meadows.  My respond was ‘the trip was an “11” on a scale of “1-10”.  I won’t return and hope it will be just as good’.

You and I have each had a hospital trip that has given us time on the calendar.  I learned that I am doing what my body and mind want/can do now, not what I did in the past.

Your new place is probably not too far from the Fish Hatchery County Park.
Jill and I drive along I-5 on our way to northern CA and the Eastern Sierra.  Send me your address and we can stop by on our next trip.  It is nice that you posted an update on the current stage of your life’s journey.

Intuition is indicating you will be back on skis at some point, some place, in some fashion. Maybe emboldened by family wine, skiing in a Santa suit, bringing cheer to the local ski area? As my 3 year-old, says... "just saying, it's just a thought."

Regarding, the water sport injury, it's certain many of us have been there, and almost done that. Sorry your experience ended so roughly.

I have always had an unusual but benign rhythmical thingie in my heart, and have a famously low heart rate of around 40 bpm.  The medical crew on the “Mercy Fight” was convinced that I was going into cardiac arrest.  It took several hours to convince them that my main problem was a broken neck, not an unusual heart. Eventually I was taken to the neurological unit where they could assess my neck injury.

I am a lucky man. After coming within a whisker of being a vegetable, further CR scans showed that there was no movement in any of my fractures. At no time did I have any symptoms of spinal cord injury. After 12 weeks in an uncomfortably tight cervical collar, and another few months of PT to get strength and flexibility back, I should be able make a “full recovery”.

You ARE a lucky man my friend, or perhaps I should say we are lucky to have you for some more years to entertain and inspire us, and in a new venue!  I look forward to an improvement  over the Ashland I-5 rest stop for my Tercel Townhouse, oenophelia discussions, and personal concerts by Obiwan.   Thanks for the years of kitty care and guide service you provided this youthful admirer.  :)
