Climbing helmets decent for skiing? was created by knitvt
Anyone have any suggestions of climbing helmets that would provide at least decent protection from potential skiing-related impact?  I recognize a climbing helmet won't provide the same protection that a ski helmet does, but I know a fair number of folks take climbing helmets while BC skiing.

I'm looking for something:
a) Less warm than a ski helmet, so that I'll actually wear it on the uphill as well as the downhill.  And also a better option for summer skiing.
b) Lighter than a ski helmet.
c) Appropriate for ski mountaineering/crevasse rescue.

I know that the CAMP Pulse is rated for both climbing and skiing, but I've seen mixed reviews about it, and I have a hunch it's still warmer/heavier than I'd like.  I'm strongly considering the Black Diamond Vector, but wanted to see if any of you all had advice or thoughts about good options.  I'm assuming that foam climbing helmets will provide better protection from a skiing fall than suspension-style helmets, but I'd love some thoughts from folks more knowledgeable about this.

Thanks!

have you looked at the Petzl Meteor III ?   thats what i usually wear when i wanna protect my melon.    not 'certified' for skiing, but its better than nothing and is very light.

The meteor iii+ is certified for bike and whitewater use so it seems like a solid choice if it fits your head.

I use a bd tracer because petzel helmets tend to be tight on my large head. It it is due for replacement soon and i'll look at the vector and the funky new petzl sirrocco and check to see if the newest meteors are any roomier (they come in two sizes now i think).

You are dead on on foam vs suspension. The climbing certification is out of date and only considers top impact ( www.thebmc.co.uk/helmets-off-centre-impacts )...I want side/back impact protection for climbing and skiing. I look for a helmet that has thickish foam all around my head and one that fits well and won't be pulled around too easily.

A bike helmet might be another option.

Yep, the Meteor III was in the running - it just doesn't happen to fit my head all that well.  But it's got the right kind of construction.

ryanb, thanks for your thoughts.  Glad to know I'm on the right track with what construction to be looking for.  I think the BD Vector is the successor to the Tracer?  And the Sirocco is certainly pretty intriguing (and bright!).

And Randy, thanks for that link.  Next time I replace my ski helmet proper the Pulse will probably come into consideration... it would be good for the warmer months.

Following Lou Dawson's blog climbing helmets for skiing , I got one like the BD Tracer he mentions; I wear it all the time in hard snow/low snow conditions not only to protect my brain bucket but also because it is the coolest/most vented head gear I can wear and still get sunburn protection for my scalp with thinning hair; I can also put a sweat band or beanie underneath it with no muss or fuss.
