Mt Hood Aerial Tram--Timberline/Ski Bowl was created by Girafastyle
(Did a quick search on TAY and didn't see this mentioned of late--sorry if I'm posting on something already in discussion. Also, I do not know much about the current version of this project yet, so take my comments with a grain of salt and make up your own mind.)

I just received a email from Fusion Pass about their excitement regarding the long ago proposed aerial tram connecting Timberline, Government Camp and Ski Bowl. This is not new, but it looks like it's finally in the planning stages and on track to become a reality.

"As a valued Fusion Pass holder, we wanted to inform you of a proposed project that we’ve been planning for a long, long time: An overhead tram connection between Mt. Hood Skibowl, Collins Lake Resort at Government Camp, and Timberline Lodge. This new connection will create the largest lift served vertical drop of any ski destination in the United States. That’s right, the most vertical in the U.S., right here on Mt. Hood! "

Though I recognize the traffic/parking issues around Government Camp, the idea of a mega resort* alla Whistler/Blackcomb or SkiLink Wasatch does not sit well with me for a number of reasons. (*Note: I'm not comparing T-Line or Ski Bowl to the above in regards to terrain, etc. but more to the hubris of bigger is better.)

1) Cost--Sounds like the majority will be private funding, but how much will the builders siphon from public funds.

2) Disneyland syndrome and further privatization of public lands.

3) Landscape--Yes, the South side of Mt Hood is very developed, but a aerial tram will just further degrade the landscape. (This isn't the first tram from Government Camp to Timberline...
)

IDK -- seems like it could be a good idea -- particularly if they extend bus service from Sandy up to the tram base -- then people won't need to drive in order to ski.

Certainly building the tram will have an impact -- but what if the alternative was to expand the parking lot at Timberline and perhaps widen the road? A worse alternative IMHO.

As far as Disneyland syndrome -- I get that feeling at all lift served areas.

If they build it I would certainly try riding the tram up from Ski Bowl to Timberline -- skiing down from Timberline to Ski Bowl seems like more fun than driving.

Hell yes!
Exactly what this country needs.....you Yankees are soooo far behind the Euro's and even the Canukistanis.

I'd personally like a telepherique to the top of Steamboat Prow from White River Campground..now that would be progress.
