...
Great post Brian, what helps me is defining what
I want in a up-track, like steepness and turn radius',
and then applying it to the terrain .

Some thoughts that have been occurring to me increasingly frequently concerning uptracks include:

(1) How many tracks must there be? If the first group sets a really steep track, will another group set yet another track? How many are willing to follow an efficient avy-safe track rather than jump off to do a steep track. I have seen multiple tracks up the same ridge and I couldn't figure out why each group had to set their own track. Now add the snowshoer tracks and the whole ridge face is trashed.

(2) What about the down in setting an uptrack. Again, I have seen vigorous skiers set uptracks in what would be the ideal down track for that face. I don't understand why--maybe because there is no why, just the shortest (steepest) distance between two points.

(3) Shortcuts--on yo-yo slopes I have frequently seen skiers stop before the base and take a shortcut to the nearest uptrack--leaving even more of the slope in traversing trenches.

I'm not suggesting anyone do anythings; that would be un-American; just thinking out loud.

I've been going deeper into the BC to not worry about these things.

Yup, I just do the opposite of following the crowds, I'd rather put in my own track and a not see a soul. This sometimes leads me to bad places though ;) I've actually snowboarded Mount Rose in the Olympics....more than once haha.

I used your track, I am pretty sure and it was fine, and not too steep except where it entered the trees from that road about halfway up... All three of us fell down there, but that was unavoidable steepness...

I am a backseat trail breaker and would have told you for sure if it sucked :P

The hoards are coming up.  One asks; "did you put in this track?"  I sheepishly nod.  He says "it's steep".  Is that good o bad?

It's good, because it was yours.  They can always get up a few minutes earlier, or exercise their right to punch their own trail.

Fun post, thanks.

Hey Aaron, way to funk up a great thread!
What a jerk!
Two words , one finger pal!

I hope you actually know this guy and are his ski buddy, because something tells me you wouldn't have that response to him in the parking lot, or the bar, after a day of skiing? That's my rule at least.
