My heel piece broke after less than a year of use - dynafit is happily offering to replace the broken part under warranty. However does anyone know if this is a design issue which has been fixed in newer models/should i request to have the non-broken one replaced too?

The "known issue" that usually gets mentioned has to do with breaking the cast aluminum lifters - Dynafit puts that down to a metallurgy problem and says it is fixed for 2013.

It looks like you broke the stamped steel plate that holds those lifters, as well as the plastic plate that goes on top of the steel one. This is also a known issue but doesn't get talked about much.

At any rate, wouldn't hurt to ask for a backup . . .

I think this must happen quite often, I know of three people who have had this failure.  It's nice that Dynafit takes great care of the customers, but that's not much comfort when your five miles back in knee deep snow. The other side of the story is, I have a pair of older speeds that have six or seven seasons on them with thousands on hard won vert. and they are still going strong.

Bummer! I have the same bindings.... What were you doing when the binding broke? I've been wondering if there would be any durability issues since they made such a major change.

From the picture it looks like you probably could still tour with no heel lifts (I guess you can tour with just toe pieces...) and lock in to ski. Obviously not long term, but at least enough to get back to the car. Am I seeing that right? I'd feel a little better about it if I knew that it wasn't a catastrophic failure.

Thanks!

I had some cracks in a Radical ST heel piece , similar, but smaller than your's I hadn't noticed them, but when I brought my bindings into Marmot in Bellevue for the recall replacement of the sheer pins, their shop noticed the cracks and replaced the cracked parts under warranttee.   No problems since. In my case the part that cracked was the plastic that attaches the heel lifters to the heel piece, if they had cracked completely, down hill ski mode would not be affected and touring would still be possible, but with only "flat" and "modest" heel lift options -- no stilleto mode.

I'm curious about Dynafits on Super 7's.  I have a pair of those skis, and when I wear them, I'm not being gentle.
